Buy a simple wood or upholstered headboard. If you choose upholstered, it will need to be much darker than the cream dresser because it's near impossible to match the fabric to the dresser without custom upholstery. Add nightstand in some colorful paint or match the wood in the headboard.

For the rest, have her pick the bedding first, then choose the paint color. The paint needs to coordinate with the wood flooring. A throw rug is easy to add, have her pick one she can wash in your washing machine.

You could begin with a double metal frame with no headboard -- let her pick one she likes later. You could paint the wall a light gray and then paint an accent to the wall above the head of her bed in her favorite color rather than any headboard.She may even decide she wants a bulletin board on the wall above her bed in that accent stripe in lieu of a headboard.

It should be easy to find light gray sheets and pillowcases.

With the basics items neutral, let her choose any wild colored comforter and pillow shams and throw pillows she wants.

As for a bedside table(s), seriously consider a wood two drawer file cabinet (with or add wheels) you can paint the same color as her dresser. We all have papers/documents we need/want to save so make the bedside table do double duty and filing cabinets will be useful even through her college years. Some even come with locks on them. Some have only two deep drawers, however, slightly taller ones also have a third shallow top drawer. Items other than papers/documents can be stored in deep file drawers -- they're deep enough to hold a purse and/or book bag.

A comfortable desk chair that rolls and a basic wood typing table the chair can be pushed beneath when not in use are also items that will withstand the test of time. A typing table will give her more leg room than a desk and likely be more versatile and less expensive. Check your local office supply store for wood typing tables and filing cabinets.

Choose lamp(s) that are tall thin metal so there is plenty of room on the top of her filing cabinet/bedside table for a radio, etc., too.

For the walls, especially over the typing table, consider box shelving. If anyone in your household is DIY inclined, these can be made with shelving board and a door with top hinges easily added -- and they can be left with their wood finish, stained and/or painted any color your daughter likes.

suezbell is right about the upholstered pieces holding smells. I suggest a simple wood headboard to keep marks from hair conditioners and fingerprints off the wall.
