From Tots to Teens: Great Spaces for Boys
Give Boys Color, a Place for Fun, and Room to Wind Down
There is a special place in my heart for boys...probably because I have three of my own. No, boys aren't generally too concerned about the design of their room, but I've found that when a great space is created for them they will appreciate it. I know they have a funny way of showing it by leaving their clothes and/or toys scattered all over the room. However, as a mom, designing colorful, stylish spaces for my sons has let them know that they are truly special to me (and that's been easier than trying to hug them in public).
Designer and fellow Houzz contributor Erika Ward created this darling space for her young sons. Inspired by her boys' interest in movies such as "Finding Nemo" and "Shark Tales," Erika created a nautical-themed room with a modern twist, all on a tight budget (she found the beds on Craigslist). Kudos, Erika!
I love this blue and neutral room because it has a minimal style that the children will not outgrow. Also, the modern, monogrammed headboards mixed with a more traditional dresser creates a very interesting look.
My oldest son's bedroom used to be filled with red and other vibrant hues, but at 16, he now has a more mature space with earthier colors. Like many boys his age, he's busy with school and sports, so I wanted his room to be a place where he could study and wind down.
Tip: Boys don't need fussy lighting fixtures. If they play or workout in their room, a simple ceiling fan will be welcome.

If your son keeps his toys and books in his room, invest is a sturdy bookshelf and other storage pieces that will withstand a little wear and tear.
Tip: In smaller rooms, under-the-bed storage is a great place for clothes and other things that you want to keep out of sight.

A nautical theme works well for boys of all ages. In this room, the colorful bedding adds tons of energy and interest.
Tip: If you want to leave the walls white, layer on color and pattern in the bedding. It will keep the space from looking too sterile. Boys are very visual and do appreciate color.

When it comes to boys' rooms, sometimes less is more. Just one wall mural can make a huge impact, which eliminates the need for additional wall decor or accessories that could lead to clutter.
In this playroom, an accent wall defines a separate area, which makes this the perfect space for group play time and individual play.
If you have the space and you're able to splurge on the ultimate activity area, boys of all ages will truly enjoy a place where they can shoot hoops, run and climb to their heart's content. Boys will be boys!
