Some back story...my mother worked at Random House from the late 1930's until the mid-1950's as one of the secretaries to Bennett Cerf, who was the founder and Editor-in-Chief. Random House was a hubbub of activity, always filled with authors, poets, playwrights, actors and actresses and musicians. A very interesting and lively place indeed. Mom learned to play Scrabble from the inventor, Alfred Butts. At an early age I learned how to play Scrabble from my parents, who played it as a "take no prisoners" game, absolutely hard-core. We used a three-minute egg timer (I still have the one we used), you could not reference a dictionary unless challenged...and then only the Random House Dictionary was "legal" because the Scrabble Dictionary hadn't been out, when it was your turn you had to place at least two additional letters on the already started board, could not use names of people or places, no capitalization, no abbreviations, and when the game ended and you had any letters left you had to deduct their worth from your final score.

So the answer to your question is a resounding "no"! Anyone up for a game?

I play with my son and his wife. We don't play with a timer, but my dil is quick and cutthroat; me, not so quick. Hub won't play, saying it makes him too nervous, but he gives each player hints and sees words I often miss. Drives me crazy that he won't play.

Mrsmarv I love your hardcore rules and it seems to me that is the only way to play. I don't like dumbing down things to make them easier.

However in a challenge I am sure you would beat the pants off me with all your past experience. So while I would play you for the fun and the opportunity to learn from you there would be no money on the table. LOL

My friend, who lives across the country from me, and I, play Scrabble on the Lexulous.com, site. It's free. We play the e-mail version, and it's very good.

When I was with EXDH (and he's still dear, even though ex) we were without a TV for several months. Scrabble was a lifesaver! I really enjoyed it. I haven't played for years now, and don't even remember the rules. Final DH doesn't read or spell well, and it would be torture for him. His mother loved scrabble, but cheated! I let her cheat.

If I could get in a few warmup games, I would love to play you too. And my answer to QT is a resounding NO.

QT no, OK no, okay yes. I LOVE Scrabble! I play the hardcore rules too, except the timer. Usually I don't use a timer, although my ex boyfriend and I would sometimes impose a time limit if we didn't want to be playing all night. The only difference I can think of between now and when I learned as a kid, is that now there are a lot of slang words allowed, and are in the Scrabble dictionary. I take a lot more liberties than I used to. Qat is definitely one of my favorites! It'll get em' every time, mwahahahaha.

If you need to use the letters q and t in a word, you could use Koyaanisqatsi. It's a Hopi word -- meaning "life out of balance."

I've enjoyed reading all the above and knowing how so many have enjoyed, and still enjoy, playing Scrabble.

Three neighbors and I have started playing each Wednesday afternoon. One lady, we will call her R, has the idea that we should decide among ourselves what the rules are. WHAT?

Today M. brought the rule book and read some of them to us to refresh our memory since it had been a while since some of us had played. R. kept suggesting rules didn't matter and insisted that QT is a word. Her rational was that so many such have been accepted into common usage.

I'm going to read these comments to the group next week. R. is not the type to get upset over this, but I will make a point that we will follow the rules. She, BTW, is a retired French teacher, so it is not that she is dense.

mrsmarv, that is so interesting. My family always played "by the book" and started our children at an early age. About the letters you have left at the end of the game, we did deduct from our score, but we also added that to the one who went out. Right or wrong?

jennmonkey, we don't use a timer either. Today E. asked about slang words, but we had just finished the game and didn't get into that. We will next time.

Qat is a bush or shrub if I remember right.
One of my sons was considered "learning disabled" in school, but he was one heck of a Scrabble player and won a lot of games. We brought the kids up using the dictionary while playing to improve their spelling and dictionary skills. It sure worked! I also would buy them Mad Magazine and comic books to encourage reading. Not everyone thought that Mad Magazine was good reading for kids. Hey, DH and I would read them first and never had any reservations with them. The kids all had magazine subscriptions too, like Ranger Rick, etc.

In our family the adults have always played by the rules - and we're pretty darned cutthroat about it. If your word is challenged, and is not in the dictionary, tough cookies, lose your turn. Left over tiles at the end of the game are deducted from each player's score, and added to the winner's score.

However, we did start playing Scrabble with my son and his friends when they were about 8 or 9. Kid's rules included being able to look up a word in the dictionary, and they could ask one question about the word. They did have a time limit, so they couldn't just cruise the dictionary for possible words.

It was a marvelous learning experience for all. Kid's rules were usually gone by the time they were 12 - they were then able to hold their own against the adults!

I have my childhood Scrabble set. It has wooden tiles.

I play scrabble on pogo.com...every day...and Qi and Qa are both accepted...scrabble is a great game for me as it keeps the 79 year old brain of mine working...lol...Mary

Correct on both counts. There's nothing that stirs the old brain cells like a good game of Scrabble ;o) We have three Scrabble sets; one that belonged to my parents, one "deluxe" version, and one travel set.

We play Deluxe Scrabble daily. It's only DH and me, and we sometimes make our own rules.
e.g. we play a game "phonetically" which is a hoot; we allow borrowing 1 letter from the other person. There's a 40-point limit on this, if your score is high.

We don't use a Scrabble dictionary....we'd never be able to remember all the bizarre words allowed. We do use Qua regularly.

Oh, I never knew the leftover letters were not only subtracted from the losers score but ADDED to the winner's score! I can't believe I've never heard that rule.

I love scrabble. I just don't have anyone to play with. I downloaded am app for my iPhone that is a scrabble game that you play with another iPhone user. I would love to have someone to play with.
