Any Scrabble/UpWord lovers?

Tom,my sweetie; (what's the short-form for a live-in sweetie besides SO? I HATE that word!) and I love playing Scrabble. We play it every chance we get.

Recently we started playing UpWords that we had in the cupboard for a few years. We like it as well, but are having a hard time figuring out the proper scoring. According to the internet, it's easier to count, than Scrabble, so it must be "us" that can't get a grasp on it.

Does anyone play UpWords?

I love Scrabble and have never played UpWords but maybe you can find the answer at one of the board game forums?

I remember playing UpWords one time and found it confusing. Scrabble has always been my family's favorite game.

Do you know about online Bookworm? It probably came on your computer, but I bought the Deluxe version at Walmart for $10. You play it alone, or with help, but online you can play with others somehow.

Speaking of SO, recently Sleep by Number beds have been changing their commercials trying to be PC, and the latest is "for you and your home companion." I guess that would be a HC.

BTW, did you get you computer problem straightened out?

CT I don't think the 400 or 600mm come in package deals. At least I didn't find any when I was shopping around. But I didn't get the lens for months after I bought the camera. The advice I read was to put your money into the lens as everyone eventually trades up on the body. Just a word of advice though, if you can afford to buy a different standard lens than the kit lens, do it. The kit lens is of a pretty poor quality. Also I'm not sure I would spend the extra bucks on the zoom, I rarely zoom it in, I would just get the prime lens. I believe the primes also work better with the converters which would give you even more reach without buying the 600mm lens. I ordered waxworms from ebay. There are lots of online places that sell them for the same price but they want to charge 4 times more for the shipping. They only ship at the beginning of the week. Have you checked any of the pet stores that carry lizards for the waxworms?

Helps that DH is a scrabble player and loves words as well as politics. Never know when he will throw a new word out at me. Then the fun begins of working them into a conversation. I laugh because those serious scrabble players are a weird bunch! They talk about words with a gleam in their eye--the same gleam I get when I talk to a serious gardener. Probably should have a few points less as I jumped on TM's wagon for some of the answers and his misses for narrowing my choices. Thanks for the fun, Nancy. Happy Thanksgiving!

I replied in an earlier thread, but after hearing all your replies I was able to relate because not only did I experience firsthand your problems, but also caregivers constantly visited my senior center office looking for advice and services. So here we go: 1. The most difficult time in your life is the transition from being a child to becoming the parent. It's very difficult and heartbreaking. 2. As people get older they become less interested in activities they once enjoyed because they're just plain tired. As memory fades, they'll talk about the past. Don't fight it. My brother had Alzheimer's, and every time we visited he told us he had just come back from cutting firewood in the woods. Rather than correct him, we continued his conversation about this and he was quite pleased. Get a recorder, as mentioned above, and get as much family history as you can while the person still recalls more vividly past events. Be more accepting of their declining limits. If they just want to sit there and watch TV, let them. Try some simple chair exercises. One that helps keep legs strong is quite simple. Just sit in a chair and lift each leg. This builds the upper front thigh muscle and is one of the first exercises they have you do in physical therapy after a lengthy bedridden stay in a hospital. Also, most senior centers office similar programs just to keep people moving. Be nice to yourself. Take a break. Hire an older person who could more easily relate and also "babysit" for you so you can go out and have a few hours to yourself. If you don't, you will come to resent your caregiving. Also, there are people who would be willing to stay overnight to give you an entire weekend of freedom. Do it! And lastly, don't feel guilty if you're nice to yourself or occasionally lose patience. You're only human. Consider a day or two per week in an Adult Day Care program. Simply being among their peers can do wonders. I've seem an amazing difference in seniors who have participated in this. However, you may have to bring the person screaming and hollering at first, but very quickly they will begin to enjoy themselves. My last suggestion comes from a study I read years ago. Nursing home residents were asked what they would like to do. While activities directors thought they wanted loads of activities, when asked, the residents replied they really wanted to get out of the home for a few hours and take a short ride. We once had a program at our senior center where a local restaurant that offered a soup and sandwich type of lunch donated a number of gift certificates. We would choose an elder along with a volunteer, and they would go out to lunch. Most people really enjoyed this. However, you must keep the outing to no more than a few hours due to fatigue. Hope some of this helps, for I've been there, done that; and I have a special spot in my heart for the caregivers who look after others. It isn't easy.

Well, this is good to know. I play Scrabble with a friend who lives on the other side of the country! (WA) She and I play through e-mail. The site is Lexulous.....it's free. We have two games going now, and her friend in Florida is playing with us on a third game. It's super easy to set up, and fun. (I should have played this game for one, to practice with.) Thanks for the Literati site, I'll check it out.

I did respond to your query about my computer Friday am, but it must be too far down the track now.
It's still very slow to open. ....I timed it the other day and took a full 2 1/2 minutes to open my email shortcut. (and a couple other sites). I sure hope Ravencajun is a PAID moderator or something. He/she is brilliant and often one of the first people to respond to a query. A local fellow on the FullCircles site generously offered to take a lookie at it tomorrow for me.(holiday tomorrow). He's an avid FF fan as well.
SO long story short....ooops too late....it's still not great, but I'm working on it.

Tom and I play Scrabble Deluxe where there are 2 Q's, X's, Z's and lots more letters. It's addictive.
So he's my HC.... but so would my 3 cats! LOL

BTW, Thanks so much for your asking me about my computer problems and to everyone else for making me feel so welcome here on KT. I really like this site a lot!!

Sherry, CompHelp has never, in all my years of using it, had any paid helpers. There have been some great ones there from time to time. When I first found CH I learned quickly to 1. Wait for more than one answer. 2. Use Google to try to find the answer myself. and 3. Whatever the answer is, even though it is correct, YMMV. That came from one of the best and often most humorous helpers. It means "Your Mileage May Vary." I have fond memories of some of the helpers there and how we came to be a close caring group. Much like KT.

Ravencajun is up there at the top of the list with the best. She must eat and sleep computers.

Back to Scrabble, I've seen the Deluxe Scrabble, but the plain old one is all I can handle.
What is the Full Circles site? And which email are you using? I prefer Thunderbird.

Didn't mean to write a book, but they don't call me loquacious for nothing!

Glad we finally connected re: my computer.
FullCircles is a sister to FreeCycle here in my city. They have a little site much like this, where you can ask for any help or information (The Cafe). I posted a query for Firefox, and after a few
emails this fellow generously offered to look at my computer today.
He wrote and said his wife asked if I'd like to go over. (If I was uncomfortable, we could just go to a wi-fi coffee shop) I'll be heading over to his house hopefully mid-morning.

Anyway, I use Yahoo. Just a web-based email....not outlook express or anything. What's Thunderbird?
Google, Yahoo, and my frequently used Vermicomposting Forums sites are all slow to upload, and these I use frequently.

I have my business site still on QuickLaunch as the "e" . (Good thing, cause it doesn't support Netscape or anything except IE).
Anyway, I clicked on it this morning and it jumps up instantly.

I mentioned to Tom yesterday that he might be my HC. He was miffed. Didn't like that one at all. He said the same thing that I (and you) said....the cats could qualify for that distinction!.

For ease and to keep it simpler I do refer to him as DH in these things, or Tom. I suppose it's best to keep some privacy which is why I people say hubby, hubs, etc. So DH he is.

I have Scrabble, Upwords and even the travel Scrabble game which I find quite handy for road trips. These are all the old board game style. I like Upwords alot and because no one else ever wants to play it seems I just play single handedly and try to best old scores. I also have the computer Scrabble game and have seen the deluxe scrabble game board but just figure I've enough for now. I also like crosswords and see that these all go hand in hand.

Hi Sherry, So was the Full Circle FF guy able to solve the problem? I'm curious as to what it was.

In reading back over this thread I realized I had referred to Ravencajun as "she" and I don't know why I've always assumed that.

Thunderbird is an email program from Mozilla. I never liked OE and in the beginning used Netscape, but when I learned about TBird I've been there ever since. I have a Yahoo addy on MyPage here.
