Sorry about the cord. I'm lucky when they built my house in the 1950's they put in lots of outlets. Every wall of every room has at least one outlet for lamps,etc. And there are utility rated 220 outlets right near my stove, refrigerator and washer and dryer. Thery built hgouses better back in those days.

I bought a new Maytag washer last Dec and I'm almost positive the cord came with it. I did however buy new hoses.

Mine came with cords.... but no hoses, like chemocurl mentioned.
Oh, and I provided the vent pipe for the dryer.

No electrical cord? Really? I thought appliances came with integral cords -- only the end that goes into the outlet has a plug, Gee, silly me!

I do think the washer hoses were an 'extra' on the bill. I replaced the standard ones with heavy-duty though.

Gosh, I had no idea they came with no cords. Mine's only 3 yrs old and it came with one. But this whole thread reminds me of an old I Love Lucy show where the salesman sold her a vacuum cleaner for $9.95 for the 'works'. The 'works' was just a very small piece of it. I forget how much she ended up paying by the time she got everything she needed to use it.

Nope....mine did not come with cords either. Ended up taking them off of the old ones. What a dumb thing. It's only a darn cord for lands sake.

And the saga continues--Took the wrong cord back, asked for an 8' cord, as the installer told me. The girls at Sears said they don't carry it, 6' will do. I was skeptical, but DH decided to give it a try (well, it's Sat. night, in the country, not a lot open anyway here). He hasn't switched the cords yet, but if it works, it's going to JUST make it. I think we'll be heading back to Sears tomorrow to return another cord.

My washer came with all the hoses, btw--it was this darned dryer cord that was 'extra'. The washer looks like it runs beautifully--at least empty it was fine. I'm going to go now and toss in a couple of bathroom rugs, just to give it a try. They can dry over the shower bar, if DH has no luck with the cord tonight.

I have always had to buy cords for dryers and ranges - 220 appliances. Actually I just use the old one. You do want to double check the end on the cord to make sure it matches the outlet....some 220 outlets are different... if you are getting a new one.

It's not a big job to move the outlet up and leave the original in place.

Well, I now have a $2000 paperweight. There is not a dryer cord made in this country that is long enough to reach from a stacked dryer to the floor. I'm furious that outlet height wasn't mentioned when I bought the set. It honestly never occurred to me because most of the outlets in this new house AND the old one, are down around floor level. Had no idea that wasn't the norm (nor apparently up to code). It's normal to me.

I didn't have the plumber come out to put in the sink until I'd contracted for the washer and dryer. I would NOT have had the work done, had I known that there was no way to plug the dryer in as the room is configured.

Unfortunately, it is a big deal to move the outlet--my laundry room has terrazzo floors, and imported Italian tile walls. I don't want holes drilled in either. So now what do I do? I'm so frustrated, I'm almost in tears. Only thing I can see, is to try to get Sears to take back the washer and dryer (they didn't seem too enthused about that, I can tell you), have the $800 sink ripped out, leaving holes in my terrazzo where they bolted it to the floor, and go with a side by side washer dryer--NOT from SEARS. Never again will I buy anything from them. Ever. Their attitude this morning was pretty much, "We're going to pretend we're trying to help you, but we're really not going to do a damned thing."

I just feel so badly--I thought I asked ALL the right questions. Just didn't realize there was one more that hadn't occurred to DH and I. I didn't even want a front-loader, just figured it was a good compromise to get better use out of the space we had. Just don't know where to turn right now.

I love this house, but--can't admit this to DH--it's finally starting to defeat me. EVERYTHING has been a challenge since we bought it 2 years ago. It should be the perfect house--it's a great layout, wonderful location, but it's got a roof that won't stop leaking, no matter what we do (new roof, roofer's been out 5-6 times since and even competely redid one section, we also had the chimney water-proofed and capped--still leaks under some weather conditions.) Every little project we try to do ends up being a huge mess before we're finished, because of some glitchy thing in the house. I hate to admit it--and this is probably one of the big reasons I'm so upset today--it's finally sinking in that we may have made a huge mistake. And we cannot sell this one--it's in a super depressed area. Even considering we got a really good price on it, we'd take such a loss if we tried to sell... Don't mind me, I'm sure tomorrow will be brighter, but right now, all I'm seeing are storm clouds.

the 6 ft cord wasn't long enough? cause i found them at home depot, too...and whirlpool..

don't start pulling stuff out just yet! try calling (monday) whirlpool corp (doesn't matter what brand you have) and see what they can suggest..i'll try searching a little more, too...

ok....lowes does have "major" appliance cords...9, and 12 ft lenths...if they have them, your local hardware store can get them just ask to see a catalog if they don't have them in-store...

The reason the cords are seperate is the 220 outlets are not standard in every home. You have to be able to swithch them out for your particular house. I just took the cord from my old dryer and used it. Of course, that doesn't help you with the extra length you need. I did the same when I replaced my electric range. Have you checked with an electrician about making up a longer cord for you using the ends from the 6' cord you have?

You might insist that Sears hire an electrician to make a new cord for you, or give you credit. I agree, dealing with Sears and their staff is a challenge. Last time I dealt with them the sales woman just walked off from us because we were asking questions about the product. Because they work on commissions, she thought we were not going to buy--which we did someplace else. Upon leaving told her and the manager what I thought of the service.

LOL well it'd be nice if they'd make special cords for you for free but I'm pretty sure no place will! Most 220 outlets for dryers are put up off the floor 3-4 feet from what I've seen. Especially in basements it'd be dangerous to have it on the floor level. Even upstairs it'd be a bad idea with toddlers and animals.

It's definitely frustrating about 220v appliances not coming with a cord (and this includes stoves) but with the different plugs people would have to change them anyway so might as well not include it and the buyer get the right one. Unfortunately it seems it's not common knowledge to the inexperienced shopper but the 3 times I've bought dryers they have asked me about a cord and told me to make sure I get the right one. (I learned that quickly!) On my previous dryer the cord was really stretched to reach the outlet but my current one it's fine. There's no way a manufacturer can anticipate the needs of everyone. I don't really understand the idea of changing the standard on the plug unless the 4 prong was common in Europe or something. Not sure.

One time the delivery/installers gave me a cord for free because they didn't want to take the one off the old dryer, which I guess they're not supposed to do. In the end I'm glad they didn't. There's some rule somewhere about used cords being more "dangerous" and I do see the logic in that. The insulation hardens over time and if there's been issues the plug can be damaged and other potential problems so actually for $10 or so, it's safer to get a new cord and of course always use new hoses on a new washer and change them regularly. It's not worth spending $2k-$3K and then skimp on a few dollars for safety.

find a cord. How nice. If worse comes to worse, could you not use a heavy duty extension cord? Just thinking out loud.

I am pretty sure a cord can be made, but it can not be from an extension cord. One time I had this special electric range. It was on big wheels and it even came with an umbrella for outside, it was like two ranges back to back. Anyway, I had no place to plug it in outside or anywhere else. My husband made us a very long heavy cord that reached into the house and I was able to plug it in to a 220 outlet in the house. So if you know someone that can do electrical work they can be made to suit your needs.

There is also the possibility that your dryer requires a 4 prong plug, and that your outlet is a three prong.

I'd suggest you stopping by both The Appliance Forum and The Electrical Forum before you go to too much trouble and possibly end up with yet another wrong cord. They could suggest options and places who can help you. I 'think' all new dryers are 4 prong, and they can advise you if your outlet happens to be 3 prong, which I imagine it is.

Hang tuff...it will all work out I'm sure.
