Meet New Kitty Alice

Three weeks ago in the middle of a terrible snow storm a kitten wandered up to my brother-in-laws house. She was emaciated but friendly. Ron and I adopted her and she is just soooo super sweet. Purring all the time and stuck on me like glue.

Yesterday I took her in to get spayed. I went by the vets office (a friend of ours) to see how things were going at about 11:00. She was all done with surgery and vet said would probably start waking up at about noonish. I took her home then. She didn't wake up until after 5. Her eyes are still dilated today.

Vet said she had a bladder infection and sent some pills to give twice a day. Giving her a pill last night was a nightmare and even worse this morning. Had to wait for Ron to get home for lunch, roll her up in a throw rug and give her the pill.

Now she is super suspicious and won't let me hold her or anything. I have 7 more doses to give her. I hate this!!! Will she ever love me again? Anyone experience this?

the vet can give you a tool to get the cat to take a pill. It is a long straw looking thing, you put the pill in the gripper on the tip it puts the pill way down the throat and has a trigger release. It really is the best way to go so no one gets injured including the cat. this link shows the pill popper.

She is a beauty! I usually have our vet give my cat a shot of antibiotics so I don't have to mess with the pills. The shot doesn't seem to work quite as fast as the pills... but it does work!

It was hard, tibs, but the fact is that DH and I learned from experience that we are comfortable with two cats and that three pushes us over the edge. Also, I just prefer male cats, another decision based on experience. The shelter is having a big shindig tomorrow with a lot of guests, and I don't fear for a moment that the little girl will be adopted. I won't be able to pick up the boys until Thursday, and their presence with her tomorrow will probably focus more attention on her than if she were alone in a cage. But I did think that she would be lonely without her brothers, and knowing about the shindig helped me feel better about that.

Will my older cat prefer one new kitty or two?

I have an older cat and we lost his brother a few months ago. I and am considering getting either one or two new cats. If I do this, what is the best method to introduce new cat(s) into the house? We have had a number of guest dogs and guest cats visit for weekends during my cat's life and we have usually just brought them into the house and let them meet my kitty right away and soon afterwards they have coexisted peacefully. I don't know if I should try a new method for bringing in any new kitties? I have heard things like put the new cat(s) in a seperate room and let them smell each other. I have heard things like exchange smelly blankets during this process that smell like each other so they can get used to each other's smells. I'd appreciate any tricks of the trade you recommend!

My oldest cats first meeting of a dog ever went as so "Big old pitbull boxer walks in, snaps his leash off and chases kitty" This goes on everytime kitty braves the danger. He never hurt her, I don't know if that was because he couldn't catch her, or he just wanted to chase. And then we got a beagle, who loves to chase the cats. God old hunting drive. She still chases the cats. But she does not hurt or attack them, when she catches up to them she submits, onto her back. And if she ever gets too rough the cats chase her off. Big guy doesn't even notice the cats, they walk right up to him and sniff him and he doesn't even bat an eye. Except for when the crazy, furry black thing rolls around on him meowing and purring. That confuses him slightly. We achieved this with both animals by saying "No, leave the kitty" Of course after training "Leave it" and if they didn't, they were removed from the room, either to their crate in the beagles case, or the garage in the big guys case. They quickly learned if they didn't "Leave the kitty" They weren't allowed to be in the same room, and from that they effectively learned to leave the cats alone all together. I'm pretty sure the beagle would leave the cats alone, if they didn't like her so much. Especially our little black one, she loves both the dogs, and she LOVES playing with the beagle. And the calico pretends to hate her, but if she doesn't play with her for a day or two, she harasses her. She pretends to hate everyone and everything though, til it ignores her. However, we do still have gates in place where our banisters are, so that if ever the cats feel threatened (or annoyed, mostly) they can escape without fearing the dogs chasing them. Just because they're reliable, doesn't mean they will always be 100% reliable, and I think reconizing that is almost more important than the actual training. You hear too many stories of "Oh my fox killing dog would never hurt a fly, I dont know what happened!!" instinct!

Try pill pockets. A good pet store or your vet will sell them. You can get different flavours beef, chicken etc and you wrap the pill in them.

Oh, she's beautiful! Yes, get a piller of some kind. It's the only way to go with medicating cats.

Bless you for rescuing that sweetie and giving her a good life....Cats don't like pills for sure..when I had a cat I was told to wrap her in a towel first, that was after I got
a bad bite on my hand (that was my fault, she was scared)

Eons ago, I fed the cat a moist tid bits type of food. I made a "meatball" with two of the bits around the pill, and voila!

What a cute cat. When I have to give the dogs or cats a pill I take a piece of hot dog & push the pill into the middle after giving them a piece with nothing in it. this works for me. Your new cat will be your best friend again very soon. Good luck

She is lovely! No pill advice cause all of ours are easy do medicate, but I am sure she will forgive you. Maybe follow each pill administration with a treat, that might make it much easier.

Thanks for all your good wishes and suggestions. I have had lots of dogs and cats and given them all pills with not too much trouble. I think one of the problems is that she is new to me and doesn't completely trust me yet. Secondly, she's a little wild as well. I'm hoping that eventually she'll trust me more.

I called the vet to see if we can give her a shot instead so I think I'll take her in tomorrow for that. He said the shot isn't as effective but may still do the trick.

I second the pill pockets. My cat loves them! They are just cat treats into which you insert the pill. You can find them at any pet store.

Yes, get a "pet pill-er" or you can make one by cutting the end off of a small syringe. Easier on everyone though is to find a treat that she likes. Chicken works best for me. Cut a small slit in it and put in the pill. Give her a piece of chicken first...just a taste...then give her the one with the pill. She should gobble it down. Give her another tiny piece.

I used to babysit a GF's cats. I used a towel around the body to pop the pills down....

They forgive us luckily...
