Are your color choices only between the black and the cream colors shown in the two bottom pics? Is it possible to have the painted portions done in a color that will match our kitchen island, either the white or a darker tan that I think I'm seeing as an accent in the finish on that piece?

auntjen, that's the problem. I am limited to the colors that Canadel carries. My island is a creamy white with brown glaze so the white won't work and the almond is off as well. I'm afraid it will look like I tried to match and goofed. They have a color called Parment that is closer in color but it only comes in an antique finish and I like the satin finishes. I'm not sure the antique finish would fit the style of the room. Even though I really don't know what the style is. Here is a link to the colors on the website.

Ah, I see what you mean. I really don't think you could go wrong with the black finish. It'll go with anything, and a touch of black is always a nice touch in any room. Too, it looks like your appliances may have black fronts, and you have some darker tones throughout the space. Given your choices, if it were up to me, I think I'd lean very strongly towards the black.

I think whatever color you decide on would look great with an antique finish. Your room isn't contemporary and a specialty finish makes it look more custom.

If you're paying custom, you might as well get the look.

I think the black would look gorgeous...although I may be influenced by the fact that we just ordered a table from Saloom with a black base and stained top. I love the combination of black and cherry--it's the look I was trying to achieve (our table top is maple, so the stains were a bit different).

I would do a black base for your table. Also get custom pads made for your table top and leaves to protect it.

I have a Canadel table which I love. My chairs are from FFDM and although they are not an exact color match for the table I love them together.

I was afraid the black table would be the only black element and stick out like a sore thumb and your right black looks great with cherry. Parma42 I will look at the finishes again before I rule out the antique finish. Threegrad your table is gorgeous and looks just as pretty in both settings. I'm a midwest girl myself and your beautiful Wisc. home reminds me of the house I grew up in. If it were me, I wouldn't bring in another color painted furniture into that room. I think the island and table are so close together that the black is going to look really stark next to the creamy white island. If your island was black, then I think it would look nice. If your island and table could match in color then the creamy white would be nice. Any thoughts to redo the island black?

If you like the white and don't want to redo the island, then I think I would leave the island as the only painted wood focal point and do the table and chairs in a solid stained wood that was in the neighborhood of your cabinet color. Not that it has to be an exact match, but somewhere in that tone.

I love your original table set....I'll take it. You could just change out the chairs and keep your original table.

I think any dark wood or painted black set will work great. I agree with you and the others in that it's best if it doesn't look like you're trying to match it. That being said, I have lots of different colors and types of wood going on in my home. I think it makes it more interesting and I get comments all the time on how well they all work together, yet are all different. Then again, maybe I was just burnt out from ALL the oak in my old house (floor, cabinets, tables, chairs, china hutch, trim, I could go on...).

caroleoh, It is so funny that you responded to my post because I have refered back to your kitchen on the FKB so many times for inspiration it's one of my favorite kitchens thanks for the input. It gives me something else to think about. enails thank you I like it too it's an amish farm table but it's a little big for the space so it will be retired to our rec room in the basement.

Every room should have a little black in it. I vote for black as well.
