Flagmats over concrete squares & Pebble sheen Irish Mist

First, thanks to everyone posting their projects and experiences here. This forum is an incredibly rich trove of great first hand information - the best I've found and I feel fortunate to have found it.

My project is a total face lift of a 45 year old pool/deck/backyard. I'm doing most of the prep work myself and am still in the design phase for some of the features that will ultimately be expressed in steel, gunite, pvc pipe, conduit and stone. I'll post progress pix to the galery for those interested.

Two questions (of many) I'de love feadback on are:

Has anyone had experience (pix?) using "flag mats" as opposed to raw flagstone for an overlay of an existing deck? We're looking at the RoxPro product that will butt up against a rounded stone coping of matching color.

Does anyone have experience (pix?) of a finished project using Pebble Sheen's "Irish Mist" color? We're looking to preserve the lighter color we've enjoyed from our white plaster and this seems to do it. Any down side? Too green? We have not found an installation locally to visit.

I don't know about Flag Mats, but we have a flagstone walkway to our pool equipment. It gets extremely hot and I have to wear flip flops to walk over there. It's not even summer, yet. If the Flag Mats have figured out a way to not get super heated, then go for it.

I haven't seen Irish Mist in person anywhere. I like it from the pics. It's green, but I like green water.

Thanks scrapula for the flagstone info.

Unfortunately, our deck gets full California sun all day and will also be quite hot. Flagmats are just flagstone from China somewhat uniformly cut with a mesh matting glued to the back. They're easy to put down and can be made to look random even tho there's more uniformity than with wild stone. The labor savings and ease are what's driving my decision to use them.

We're overlaying an existing 40 year old deck of 5' concrete squares that are pretty light. They also get very hot. Not really much to do except install a water line grid in the mortar, run pool water through it, and use the heat pump cool cycle to cool it down. Of course that's pretty impracticle but ....

I just built a quartzite patio in Reno, NV. I used the new product, polymeric sand and it worked great! I got the sand in 60 lb bags for $20 a bag from Home Depot. My patio is 9X27.5 and I used 5 bags. It looks like regular sand and sweeps into the joints. You then mist it 3-4 times waiting about 10 minutes between each misting. The water activates a weak polymer glue and locks the sand granules in place. We don't have much problems with frost heaves here, but if a stone moves you can pull up the sand in chunks and step on it or use a shovel to get it back to a granular stage, sweep it back in place and re-mist. Although the polymeric sand sets up pretty hard I don't think it would stand up to a leg from a patio chair, etc., so we plan on getting sled style chairs for the patio. It does do well with walking on it and the sand stays put! So far we are very happy with it. I'll let you know how it goes thru the winter. We get very little rain here but we do get snow.

Anyone else growing moss species in pots?

deep_woods, Thanks for your tips....I have become moss obsessed and have found very little info on the web for growing it in containers. I hope to eventually take it outside, but for now, I am focusing on growing it indoors in several types of containers including: under a cloche, in a hanging terrarium (with a hole in the front), in a jar, and in a small bowl with no covering. I have harvested moss in my area (Philadelphia), where it grows all over the rocks and in cracked pavement (almost no soil at all), and even on debris-filled pot holes. From your previous conversations, I gather that taking some of the native soil/debri for the containers would be a good idea. Just as brendainva, I am growing in containers that have no drainage holes. I also gather that you would not suggest pebbles, clay balls, or charcoal at the bottom? These are suggestions I have heard from other sites. As I mentioned, most of the moss here, which is short, bold green, and clumpy, grows on extremely nutrient poor areas such as rocks and walls. Which makes me think it might do well on some rocks/pebbles. Although I cannot tell you what species it is, what are your thoughts on this? You said, "Shallow containers with fertilizer and warm weather and regular misting or watering from above with some mosses can lead to doubling the moss in a month." What type of fertilizer are you referring to? Eventually I would like to add some ferns or other native plants to my moss terrariums. For now, however, I am focusing on the moss. Thanks so much!! Have a couple of questions about using well water to fill a pool. Our outside spickets run on well water...I have never truly tested it for long runs, but generally the first 2-3 minutes I run the pump I get rust that generally clears up 99% after it's running...my best guess is that the sleeve they used to run the pump lines down 60' to my source of water has rusted, they must have used steel not the kind that won't rust.... I have a lot of water in our well b/c it taps into an underground river...I did buy a house filtration system that I can hook up between two hoses and check the filters for rust, but what considerations should I know before I fill it up? Pebble sheen is supposed to go in on Thursday..any help would be appreciated! We do have the option of running the city water into it, but it means unhooking the washing machine (which I'll desperately need the next 3 days) and running hoses around...even considered calling my local volunteer fire dept..any ideas?? Thank you so much Jenn. My wife gets all the credit for the pool design. I just had few ideas and she pulled it all together. We started with a couple of designs from PBs but then we kept wanting to change this and that to see what it would look like. So we got our own software and my wife created at least 50 different versions of our pool. The final PB plan started from our plan and they made some recommendations based on their expertise of designing pools. Our tanning ledge will only have partial flagstone around the area that will be out of the water. We wanted the beach entry for our babies - 2 tiny toy poodles. There's no way they'd be jumping into a foot of water. Let's just hope they learn to use the beach entry. I'm looking most forward to the tanning ledge. It just seems like the best area to lounge around in. Glad to hear no birds have paid you a visit. We used to have a koi pond by our patio and birds would come. But then again, we used to have 4 trees in our backyard that have since been cleared. So yes, time will tell. Otherwise I'll have to find creative ways to scare away the birds.

We are refinishing our pool with pebble sheen and am considering Irish Mist, but am concerned that it may be too green. I would like to see the color in a pool, but my contractor is having a hard time finding a pool to view in the area (Orange County, CA). I would appreciate any feedback on the color and photos of finished pools.

Hi. I have just purchased the flagmat to cover my existing concrete patio. I originally applied a solid stain and sealed it. After eight years the stain is peeling so I going to cover with flagmat.

How is yours holding up and do you have any helpful hints you wish to share with me. I would appreciate it. Thanks
