Stray Kitty Suggestions

There is this darling kitty who keeps showing up at my house...he is just too sweet....so of course i have been feeding him....and DGS plays with him,,,the kitten is so gentle and loving....I am thinking of keeping him....

I know he is afraid of other cats......ask me how I know LOL.. The little kitten pushed my door open which I just had close because i went inside to get him some food..well when he came in the living room I had my crew sitting at the front door...they started to smell him and he freaked out and started hissing at them....my crew just sat there looking at him LOL..then he ran out the door....this was a few days ago but he still comes around....he just doesn't come in the front door.LOL...I am trying to figure out how not to have him afraid,,,,of my cats,,,,I was thinking of putting him in a carrier I have a very large one for a dog

and just letting him be around them....he is a male kitty..

so I would have to take him also to vet to be fixed and get his shots...like my crew....I will try to get a pic of him and post...he is just too sweet and would fit right in with mine....any suggestions....

The crate is a good idea Red. He's been alone and has probably had to fight for food. If he comes to you and came in the house, then he probably isn't ferel yet..that's good. Your crew and the new kitty will probably have to duke it out a few times to get the pecking order in place...that's normal. But a trip to the vet should be high priority. He might have worms or ear mites he could give your cats (another good reason for the cage until you get him to vet). Once you put him in the cage and in the house...you're stuck with him! lol. Once everyone gets used to each other, start opening the cage door and let him explore. Give him a fleece blankey, a small pan for litter use and his own food/water bowl in the big cage. This will give him "his own space" to start with and help let him feel safe. Lots of petting, and sweet talk will help him bond with you, too. Within a few days, they should all start getting used to each other.

It may be wise to have a feline luekemia test done. You don't want to subject your other cats to it..and fight scratches are one way of passing it on.

I keep finding myself checking out the rescued cats that the ASPCA places in the local pet stores. Some of them are so appealing but I haven't seen the perfect one yet for Ginger. Also I remember the knot in my stomach when I added up the first bills from the vet and they were over a thousand dollars. I think I will hold off for a little while if possible. Maybe Ginger will get a late Xmas present from the ones that were gifts for some one who decided they were not meant to have pets. I know some of you are dead set against indoor/outdoor cats. I know in most cases it is for the best if they are strictly indoor cats but Ginger was a stray and short of a miracle I don't think I can change that. So far she has observed our property line except for one case recently when she got curious about the noises going on in a neighbor's house. She took only a quick peek and came back quickly. She spends a lot of time lounging on the brick wall in front of the house watching the kids at play across the street. She is always there when the High School a block away lets out for the day and she watches all the big kids go by. Ditto for the runners and dog walkers. She seems to have favorites although she doesn't let them too close. Pookie used to do that. Yesterday, I was watching her waiting for the school bell. She suddenly was looking up in the trees for some reason and it quickly became apparent why when she started ducking the hickory nuts being thrown at her. The squirrels wanted her GONE! She was interrupting their search for food to store for the winter. She tries to ambush them but they are too quick and there are too many to keep watch for her. The number of squirrels, moles, chippers and rabbits is terrible here. They do a lot of damage. Our driveway partly collapsed because the chippers dug out so many tunnels and nurseries under it. I hope they don't all figure out she only wants to play catch and release. Perhaps they will look for less threatening territory. I do keep things as safe as possible for her and the vet is becoming used to my precautions. The worst worry is the raccoons. As amusing as they are, I would wish them gone. They don't have the good manners of the ones in Wisconsin and I worry about diseases. I haven't noticed any sick ones, but they seem to be prime vectors when something is going around.I keep trying to educate the neighbors about the raccoons but they still keep putting their dogs out at night and you can tell when the raccoons go through because of the dogs barking. I, too, use the World's Best corn litter. It does have some residue dust...but far less than the clay litter. I switched to this litter as soon as I discovered it. After watching my "little" darling...[seen below creating a Kodak Moment in my laundry basket]...cleaning herself after a difficult "movement"...seeing her helplessly ingesting some of the clay...I went on a hunt to find a litter less harmful to her intestines. It took her no time at all to adjust to the corn and...to me...she seems much happier with it. She'll be 14 this summer...and she weighs a healthy 12 lbs. So...the old adage that you can't teach an old cat new tricks obviously doesn't apply to my furry companion. ;-) Anne

camarogirl219, I am so very sorry for your loss. That's a lot of years for you to pack into a single goodbye, I know. My heart aches for you and Daisy, who must be traumatized and disoriented by the loss of her bud. I suspect that the addition of a new feline might be a difficult adjustment for her, but I do think it would be best for her in the long run. I would NOT, however, recommend adopting a male feline UNLESS you find an older adult who is known to be laid back and to live peacefully with other cats. Male kittens and young adults tend to be VERY rowdy, demanding, and rough and relentless in their play. I think that might be completely overwhelming for Daisy. But an older, mellow, well socialized boy might make a wonderful companion for her after the initial adjustment period. A young female kitten might also be a good choice of companion, as they don't tend to be nearly as overwhelming as males. And Daisy might find it easier to accept a young kitten, since she will not see the kitten as either a territorial or physical threat. An adult female probably isn't the best choice, though, as they tend not to bond with other adult females with whom they have not been raised. That's my experience after having integrated many felines of both genders and all ages into my household over the decades. I wish you a peaceful grief and happy future with Daisy et al. Laurie

Actually, I don't know if the cat is even male. That would've required more attention to the cat's rear end than I've had any opportunity to have. : ) I'm only calling the cat a 'he' because the two ladies were referring to him as a male. I don't know if they paid any more attention to his rear end than I have, because I've only managed to talk to them that one time. Anyway, whatever I do, I'll have to consult a variety of people first... roommate, the two ladies, and the landlord... I'm cleared for one cat at the moment, and she's a laid back little girl. In any case, if I don't end up being the one to adopt him, I'd like someone to, because he's pretty friendly and awfully cute. An orange tabby and white, with ice blue eyes. Actually, I'd like someone to adopt the other one too, but that one seems more challenging, due to that one's skittishness. The reason why I think he might adapt to living inside pretty well, is because he really seems like he belonged to someone at one point, and he was trying really hard to get into the two ladies' house. My kitty did the same thing, parking outside my door and meowing, and she clearly did not belong outside, although she was coping really well for a cat with no front claws. Sooo, first step seems to be, talk to the two ladies about him, and see if we can coordinate a vet trip for well, both the kitties, I guess. No sense in taking in the one cat and not the other. Hmmm, I'll have to see how much money I have and how to go about this. The one weird thing is that I haven't seen the bunch of strays that were around last year. There were at least five I saw regularly. They were not friendly at all. Someone else (not the two ladies) was providing them with a bit of shelter and some food, but I always heard them fighting and saw them hiding under cars. These two I've been talking about seem to be new, only started seeing them this year. So maybe they did belong to someone, who dumped them a few months ago. I wonder what happened to the other strays, though... Oh, to make it easier, I'm going to start calling them by names. The ladies call the orange and white Freckles. The other one I'll call Gray (unoriginal - he/she's a gray tuxedo).

he is very loving and gentle...Dgs can pick him up and carry him all over...he purr'ssss his little heart out and he never puts out his nails....he is a very sweet kitty....

I agree with wooday that his own place for a while would be a good start. You have other cats so I would take him to the vet before taking him into the house to make sure he doesn't have anything that could harm your "crew."
We have one cat, her name is Kitty and she was just left at our last house when we bought it. My daughter tamed her and it took a long time. At first no one could even touch her now 12 years later she is the most friendly cat and even jumping up into our laps. She has come a LONG way. So slow and steady wins the race.

Give him time. Ditto idea of crate. Then you can move him to a larger space a spare room if you have it. He'll come around in his own time.

10 years ago our 'former' cat, Mama, adopted our puppy and it took several years before she would sit on our laps. She'd use the dog door to come & go as she pleased. Since the fire she has been living with DD#1 behind us. She is very happy now as in inside cat at the 'retirement home'. Her housemates are two of her kittens & a Yorkie and she loves to play with them.

I've found that with time the old ones get used to the new ones! I think he'll blend in quite well!

Oh, thanks Red for taking care of the little stray. Woodsy's advice sounds good. I have isolated each of my "new" cats in a room for at least a week and one vet trip. With one cat, I had the door fixed at one inch open so they could smell each other, but eventually I had to find a new home for him. It just did not work out. The last kitten I brought home from rescue was so happy to see other cats it was never a problem. Since your kitties just sat and looked at him, I think that is a really good sign and the new guy will more than likely adjust. When do we see pictures and what will you name him?

Well patches stray kitties new name...is in my sons room.
His room is off the laundry room so he is spending time with my son and DGS who is just thrilled.....we are trying to see if anyone owns him so far NO! Right now patches is fast asleep and safe from all the wild kitties outside and believe me there are quite a few.....my vet is on vacation so I will have to wait for her to get back....I am keeping him from my cats...because he is afraid of other cats....
will get a pic tomorrow of him.
