I really wanted to get my guest bath downstairs done. All your comments really were appreciated. I never realized how much doing that room helped me.

I had my first bad day after my first chemo treatment. Once the anti nausea meds they gave me during treatment wore off it hit me hard. (Next treatment I will take my meds at home ahead of time to prevent this hopefully).

While sitting on the floor in the bath, wondering if I would survive this torture, I looked around me. I thought to myself, if I have to endure this at least I am in a pretty place. That may seem strange, to be thinking of decorating while heaving but it was a moment for me.

They say we may be a little obsessed with our homes but my dh says it should be a place we can relax in. For me it truly has paid off.

seeing this post after the "obsession" post speaks volumes. Your home should be your "safe place". I hope yours give you a comfortable place to recover and heal. Everyone here will be thinking of you.

My daughter was on the iconic three month travel through Europe after she graduated from college. She asked me to come and join her for ten days. She, with the confidence of youth, instead of making reservations for a lodging, would find the listing of available places in the train station and we would pick one. It made for some interesting experiences. We arrived in Edinburgh, Scotland, tired and anxious to settle in for the night after walking all day. This time we found a winner, a small, classy hotel on a side street. The room was cozy. The mattress on the bed was so thick that one almost needed a ladder to climb in. The attached bathroom was clean and in good condition, but was a remnant from a prior century. The sink was large, the toilet had a pull chain, and the tub was very deep and narrow, there was no shower. I called "first dibbies" (a family tradition in a home with only one bathroom) and won the right to get the dayÃ¯Â¿Â½s grime off first. The tub held enough hot water for a delightful soak and I settled in with great contentment. After a while, there was a knock on the door and a voice inquired if I was all right. It was time to leave the tub - but I couldnÃ¯Â¿Â½t get out! Now I knew that my hips werenÃ¯Â¿Â½t that wide, it was just that there didnÃ¯Â¿Â½t seem to be a level place to get any leverage to stand up. The water was getting cold and again the voice on the other side of the door was a bit more insistent - "are you sure youÃ¯Â¿Â½re all right?" The story of President Taft stuck in the White House bathtub ran through my mind. At last, in desperation, I got on my knees, got my right hand under the lip of the tub (the old fashioned bathtub actually had a lip) and reached my left hand way over to an almost out of reach towel rack, and with great relief, heaved myself out, wondering what would have happened if I hadnÃ¯Â¿Â½t been able to. As I left the bathroom, I warned Claudia in very strong language that the tub was the spawn of Beezlebub, but she just laughed and I thought I heard her mutter something that sounded a bit like "she losing it" as she disappeared to finally get her share of the hot water. She was gone a long time - too long. She, young, strong, and slender, at last emerged quiet and red-faced. She had to admit that she had quite a struggle to get out of the tub too - but I never did hear about how mothers are always right. I wonder if anyone who stayed in that room more than one night ever took more than one bath.

I don't know if they are male or female. I googled it and attempted to find out but I'm still not real sure. My guess is they are both males. The new platy is a little bit bigger, but it's being picked on by the platy we already had. I kept the bigger platy in the net at the top of the tank overnight and just now let him out this a.m. And the smaller platy went right bak to chasing him around the tank. He doesn't quit either, continuously chasing it back and forth. This is just a 10 gallon tank. There aren't many decorations in it, but I could try rearranging them. He seems to chase him, wherever he's at. I don't have another tank to put one of them in. If this is going to happen with whatever fish I put in there, then I almost should get rid of the small, aggressive one, not the new one. What do you think?

Bathing and hygiene is a HUGE thing when dealing with the elderly... in varying states of "failure". Bathing is such a private thing. Our "alone" time... all of sudden we can no longer do it SAFELY alone. Privacy is GONE. I have NO idea how that must be; but I know how tough it was for Mum. Knowing that, I hired our "bath lady". She is familiar to Mum, but it's NOT the same as having her daughter bathe her. It's still "private" for Mum, but it's controlled and safe. I occasionally help her bathe, but not very often. It's better that way; gives Mum more privacy and gives me more "freedom". I had some trouble with the "bath lady" early on. But simply laid out what I wanted, and the practical reasons why. Everything is OK now, and whenever there is a holiday/long weekend I offer the day off to her. AND pay her for it. She's earned it, and she deserves it.

I know what you mean. My husband is that way too, but he has shared the webpage as much if not more than I have. His children live in Kansas and North Dakota, so it has been a way to keep them up to date. Downstairs is almost drywalled. I will try to venture down there tomorrow or Monday. I was going to clean down there Monday so I might wait and take pictures then. I did add a few new pics this evening. Keep in mind, I have no decorating sense and even fewer decorator dollars left haha. I do have a few items to add to the walls, etc but I just cant bring myself to put a hole in the wall, so researching my options. Some of the stuff is rather heavy so just not sure about what to do yet. Here is a link that might be useful: March pics

Not strange at all. 12 years ago I was recovering from BC surgery and extensive reconstruction, with 4 drains stuck in me here and there- and it was peaceful and reassuring to look around my bedroom and admire it- a little vacation from my surgery if you will- and a little grounding at the same time- that where there is life there is hope.

I really wanted to get the wallpaper boarder back up into my masterbath before I started chemo. I get a straight shot from my bed and of course when in the room. The room is very relaxing colored and feel. Had to take it down to do crown molding and now don't want to be up on a ladder by myself. My dd is big enough to help me and I am feeling good so I might just tackle it with her help. I figure if I am stuck at home I might as well enjoy it.

Sorry to hear your going through this.....
I Remember having the stomach flu years ago and laying on my new marble tile flooring because it was "cold" and close to the toilet, thinking how nice this was compared to the old pink carpet. :0)

Shannon, this is not strange at all. I think it's wonderful that you can be in a place that gives you pleasure and comfort while you're going through such an awful experience. I've been going through a lot of stress lately - *nothing* like what you're going through - but having my apartment even partly done has been a good feeling for me.

I actually think being able to heave in such a beautiful bathroom may even help you recover faster!

Shannon, you've put a whole new 'spin' on decorating! I've always known that a home should be a place where you look around and you're happy to be there, but being ill and possibly *not* being able to leave the house for days at a time, you have to be in an environment you love. God bless. ;o)

That's the best reason to decorate etc.... to make our often standard cookie cutter houses into personal homes where we feel secure, peaceful and happy.

I don't think it's strange either. In fact I think beautiful places help our state of mind. There is a famous quote, although I don't know who said it: "A thing of beauty is a joy forever."
