Existing 25 yo pool - Cost to resurface with pebbletec

I live in the California bay area and have an existing 25 yo plaster surface pool. THe pool is 20x40 rectangle in remarkably good shape - no cracking or other issues.

We would like to update it a bit by having it resurfaced with pebble tec.

I got a bid of $19,000 from a local pool contractor - this is only resurface the pool. This is way out of our budget and far more than I expected.

Am I just totally clueless about the costs involved? I have seen where pebble tec adds $5000 to the cost of surfacing a new pool but I don't know anything about the cost to update an existing pool.

Any thoughts or recommendations for pool contractors in the Palo Alto - San Jose area would be welcome. I obviously need a little education.

Cost down here for a pool your size in So Cal is about $8500 for a group 1 pebble tec wo/tile. Go to pebble tec's web site and contact the nearest applicator in you area. The pool builder is a middle man for the pebble applicator.

I'm in the Bay area as well. Be very carefull who you hire since I know several folks in the area who have been ripped off. Also - be sure pebble tec is really what you want as some are disappointed and wish they stayed with regular plaster.

The water is up to 76 degrees and I took my first plunge on Friday evening. My plan for many months has been to do a cannonball for my first dip into the pool and I accomplished this much to the delight of my sons :) BBQ last night and then fireworks across the lake made for a very pleasant time. janey...as far as your question on falling off of the pool deck..I have to put a fence on the sides but really don't want to fence towards the lake...it is about a 3' dropoff onto a mulch area with some plantings (soft ones with no stickers/thorns)if you would fall and then grass in front of that. I believe White Sands does it all. I'll send you their phone number by email. Thanks for the comment on the tiles on the steps. We really like it too. Much better than the little diamond tiles. Because my mother is elderly (89) and still swims with us, we wanted to be sure she could see the steps clearly, so the bright flip flops are perfect for us. The salesperson with White Sands - Cindy, too - told us about a pool they did in which the owners had one shoe on the top step, the other shoe on the next, a bikini top on the pool floor near the steps and the bottoms further out in the pool. Then they finished it off by having the beautiful mosaic of a mermaid swimming with a turtle a little further out. Isn't that cute? The mosaic possibilities are really wonderful and I think they add a nice touch. There are also really nice shell and starfish tiles that are just the right size - about 3"x3" - in a variety of solid colors. We had planned to use the starfish but wanted the sandy beige ones and the store was out of that color when we stopped in. So we switched to the fish and flip flops. Now I'm glad we did because the bright colors are so easy for my mother to see. If the cost had not been an issue, I would like to have used the seahorses and seaweed along the sides of the pool. Scott, We have chosen a builder and they did the excavation yesterday. Today they are laying the rebar. We are supposed to get a storm here in NJ over the weekend into next week and I was wondering what your thoughts were on what kind of damage can happen to pool if there is a lot of rain and wind. Hi there, have not been on in a loooong time! Sdkath: do you still need the photos? I can probably dig some up if you do. The whole pool photo here where the water is riplling a lot is a good approximation. I have noticed that the shallow end water is slightly bluer in the summer (as shown in that photo) than it is in the winter when all the surrounding foliage and colors are gone; in the winter it is a shade cooler, a bit gray, absolutely NO GREEN. We keep the pool open all year not to swim, just for the aesthetics. Hate those black covers ugh, and my pool sparkles all winter long. kgolby: We have NO REGRETS AT ALL!!! Love it more all the time. Love that the color is just a bit differentthan everyone elses, too. Love that when we have people over they look at our pool and say, "I thought Pebble pools only came in black or Tahoe?" Because all you EVER see around here are those 2 colors. It is just a fantastic color, I could not be happier and I only wish my pool refinisher would tell people about it and let them come and see my pool. I am convinced it is the name "Majestic Plum" that flips people out. iswim: i will submit it, I just don't have a completely pristine photo yet where there are no toys, dogs, or hoses in the photo! :-) My pool is a 30+ year old pool, and the PebbleTec and flagstone updated it miraculously!

dapooltec - unfortunately the closest Pebble tec installer that they have on their website is over an hour away and in an area with tons of pools - they are very backed up.

I guess the guy who quoted isn't "certified" since he wasn't on their website? How does that work? I know his company does great work - our landlord while we remodel had her pool done - that is what turned us on to pebble tec. She is in real estate and he has done at least 8 other pools for her. He is just very expensive - used to 2-3 million dollar properties with big budgets and we are not quite in that category ;-)

tommyw - do you have any names of pool surfacers to avoid?

We had another quote today for pebble tec that isn't the pebble tec brand - it is called Wet Edge Satin Matrix. He said it is just as good as Pebble tec. Have you heard of this and is it comparable?

With tile replacement the bid was $12,000 - getting closer to our "blind" budget of $10,000 that we were willing to invest in the pool.

We also have to replace the automatic pool cover that lasted exactly as long as they said it would - 7 years!

DH is going to see if there is any negotiation possible.

We will definitely check this firm out - they came highly recommended and seem to have everything in order but you can never do too much checking up.

... as a follow up ... the experiences I mentioned were folks who went with the lowest prices ... the companies they used all went out of business. Also, IF your plaster is not totally gone, you may consider doing an acid wash followed by a diamond polish. It made my my 25 yr. old pool look like new and can be a DIY project.

I know this thread is old, but I just payed $5120 to resurface with PebbleTec. This is for a pool with an 80' perimeter. I am in Sacramento, CA and Adams Pool Specialties did the job and they will be back today to acid wash and then I can start filling the pool!! They also included free tile cleaning with the bid. I would definitely recommend them!
