paint chip queen needs professional help

My DH says I have a problem!!! I have been agonizing over this decision too long. I have honey oak floors, dark brown leather couch and sage green lazyboy all of which have to stay. the curtains are sage green and would like to keep for now, everything else can change. I like cool colors, DH likes warm and we never agree on color. I really just want something that looks nice and like it belongs. The kitchen that it is open to is in the blue shades(floor) and am thinking of giving it a fresh coat of paint too(maybe wedgewood gray).

Now I have painted this room many times and have never got it right. Once it looked pink, Now it looks dirty green (lancaster whitewash). It has good light through the day but is L shaped so has a shadowy corner. I don't want anything too dark and want a neutral

I am considering edgecomb gray(is it too light)

manchester tan

natural lines (almost the same)

grant beige(like this but worry about it looking green)

Any other ideas??? Comments on my picks?? I have access to BM paint, but the outlet doesn,t carry sample jars so it's expensive to try too many.

Also would you paint a different color on the tray ceiling??

Is there a wall that would make a good accent wall? If so, maybe you can do a darker sage as an accent and a light warm neutral elsewhere. Something for everyone. Blond Wood comes to mind as a neutral. Its a light not-yellow-not-beige but somewhere in between.

I wonder if the problem isn't that you are determined to stick to a neutral. It might be easier to find something for the space that you and DH both like if you considered colours if you have not already done so. Or wallpaper for that matter, but that might not be your style (but can think of a few that would be stunning in there).

Lazygardens recently posted a link to this blog (that I've linked below) and the author (Maria Killam) has some interesting things to say about colour vs. neutrals, especially in places that don't have a lot of natural light. That may be the situation with respect to your shadowy corner.

Check out the quote from her in the Style at Home magazine that is currently on her home page. I found many of her blog entries (listed down the right if you scroll down) very helpful, especially about light colours and dark rooms.

Sometimes when I am driving myself crazy trying to find a path among a number of constraints, I come to realize that some of the constraints are actually self-imposed and can be overcome just by giving myself permission to think of something different. I've just spent nearly three days full time obsessing about colours in a couple of rooms (after a few weeks of stewing about it too) so believe me, I've been there!

In the one case I found an answer by giving up on blue which I thought for the longest time was the only option I had in the space and looking at pinks instead. That locked-in with no way to go feeling was something I'd done to myself!

No, it's the same house. We actually closed on it in October. Looks a little different now, but not by much. Been too busy this summer. All the lattice is gone from the front porch, the porches have been leveled, and a bunch of paint's been scraped, although we're far from finished! All the windows have been changed over to energy efficient windows, too. Also, right along the side of the house facing the camera from the front porch back, my wife's got a beautiful flower garden going. :-) Now if I could just make the porches safe to walk on! Deck Paint is also a film-forming finish and is slippery when wet, unless a fine, sandy aggregate is added to the product to make it slip resistant. I can do that. I've got a couple of bags of silica sand in the shed that I can mix in and more or less turn it into "non-skid".

I guess there's always a chance they took the primer but somehow I doubt. We go over everyday after work and take pictures of what they've done. I would think if they put primer on, it would need at least a day to painted on throughout the house and let it dry so they could paint. thanks for everyone's input this has been a really tough thing for us and the contractor has left a lot to be desired. We had to oak trees fall on the house and had to have 15 new trusses put in plus the majority of our upstairs was destroyed and gutted. This happened back in May and we just got our roof replaced 2 weeks ago.

I don't have any color selections, but I do have advice about how to test colors. On interiors, it is notoriously difficult to compare or choose a new color when painting it over an existing color, and you're having the same problem. In the interior, I have learned to paint a giant piece of drywall and heft it around the house, leaving it in corners and on opposite walls, to see it during the morning, afternoon and evening in different locations. You could do the same thing, except you need a grander and easier thing, so here's what I would do: Paint out the whole wall around your garage the same color as your garage. So the entire wall is one color, right up to the trim. Then you can test your choices on the wall right next to your trim and you can actually see things like whether there's enough contrast, or whether the colors are working together. Finally, I don't know about your location, but you can hire color consultants to work with you, even remotely. It isn't expensive, and might be helpful.

Thank you, I could tell this was terrible work when I saw it. I just didn't know specifically what wasn't down correctly. I was using Sherwin Williams Emerald paint as well, which it supposed to be good paint so I'm really surprised they could manage to screw it up like this. Thanks for responding, it does kind of confirm my worst fears. To clarify, he wasn't actually supposed to paint the trim at all. He also got quite a bit of paint on the celings which weren't supposed to be painted and they weren't able to match the existing paint so I'll have to have those repainted as well. It really sucks, this was my first painting project with my home and it's been just a mess. The owner is also seemingly insane, he's hiring some big name law firm to try to defend this, claiming he did everything perfectly but also simultaneously suing the painter he sent out to do the painting for. I just wanted my house painted but it's become way more than I ever imagined it would be.

What colors are the most flattering to you? I always pick paint colors that I would wear, as a sweater or dress. If you look good in the room, you'll be happy in the room, and why should the sofa look better than you do?

wendyb- i will see if I can get that paint chip. I actually can't find that one in my collection.

karinl- thanks for the link, that's a great website. I once tried soft fern, and found it too pastel for this space. And once even had wallpaper. I think that DH is at the point that he will be happy if I would just find something I love, but it's not been happening. When I DO paint it this time, I think I will just have to pretend I like it, I have redone this way too many times.

ideefixe- If mama's happy, everyones happy, ha ha.

I don't like things too bold, am drawn to rooms that are light, white, and very void of color. Love all shades light, with a bit if color in the accesories, like jewelry.
I also am fairly picky, but if I find the right color will be happy to live with it forever.
Would like to hire a consultant but live 100 miles away from any. Believe me, the guys that mix the paint at our outlet hardly know the difference between black and white.

Actually the woman who writes that blog apparently does colour consultations by email! I can't find where I saw it referenced just now, but I'm sure I did. Or one could just email her and ask.

I had my living room painted Grant Beige last month, at great expense (over $4000) because one wall is wood panelling and needed to be painted in oil and the ceilings are high. Now I am finding it too green and muddy for my taste and have asked the painter to come back and repaint the whole thing. The new color will be Edgecomb gray, the color of my hallways. Don't know why I didn't choose this color to begin with--I had it in my old house and loved it. Live and learn.
