Vinyl Liner Replacement - Cost and Recommendation

I am looking to replace the liner in my pool. Pool is free form in shape approx. 35 feet by 25 at its widest dimensions. Depth is only 5 1/2 feet at its deepest and 3 in the shallow. I am in Northern Westchester County, NY. Can anybody give me a cost range for replacement (materials and labor) and if possible, a recommendation for a company in my area. Any other advice would certainly be appreciated. I assume water replacement is an extra cost. My "pool guy" who does openings/closinbgs, etc. does not do liners. He gave me two companies he has heard some good things about, but havent yet called them. They are: Brewster Pools, nc. (Water&Woodpools.com) and Water World in Poughkeepsie, NY - which I cant seem to find online. Thanks.

You're looking at something the neighborhood of about $3100 installed for a 20 mil if there aren't any repairs.

Thanks Scott. Does that include any wall or floor "foam cushioning" ? I had one company over this past weekend and am waiting for the estimate. Also, this company told me that as we have a plastic type coping with a channel that the liner goes into, if we want to change to stone coping, a different liner system is used. Thus, we need to decide that now. Is this correct ?

Hi -- we're actually in the process of building a vinyl pool in Central NJ. Although we haven't signed a contract yet, Levco Pools has done at least 5+ pools in our neighborhood. People in the area seems to like them and I know they do vinyl replacements. There is also AAA Liner & Cover Experts. I have no personal experience with them but I did check with the BBB and they have absolutely no complaints. Riverview Pools is actually building a pool in our area -- is there a reason you aren't calling them to replace the liner? Just curious, as I was thinking about calling them for an estimate also. I hate to tell you but if I were doing the repair (just quoted one yesterday) The cost would be about the same. Before I would do that I would contact a bathtub repair person to come and give you a cost on fixing the bad place. Hope this helps

I'd be more concerned with his methods of installation. Many times an installer who is used to installing low end windows often times is more interested in getting the job done quickly than taking his time and doing it correctly. Some of the questions I would have would be, 1. Does he use fiberglass insulation or foam such as Dow or Hilti? Foam being the preferred method. 2. What type of caulk does he use? Quad being the preferred type but some of the installers still use silicon inside and out. BTW nothing wrong with using Silicon on the inside. We use it b/c the fumes are less toxic and noxious than the Quad for the first 24 hrs. 3. What does he do to level the window on the existing sloped sill? I'd ask him these questions to get a conversation started about his install technics and then ask for some references from jobs he did 4 or 5 years ago and call the people and get their input. I'd also ask for the addresses of a few homes he's done recently and visit them. Pay close attention to the capping and caulking. If the exterior molding was a Contoured Colonial type, did he just bend the trim coil into a "U" shape and cap or did he take the extra time to fabricate a piece that matched what was there. Also look to see if he made a rain diverter on the top of the window if it was installed into siding. He may very well do a good job for you but I'd still check on the above suggestions before signing a contract.

That seems to be a little high to me, but is still a much better deal than the others. The contractor series isn't the worst window but the Premium is a lot nicer. I would suggest at least looking at the windows in person and then decide if it is worth the upgrade. If they are larger sized windows I would definitely go with Premium.

Wall foam would be extra.

Floors are not normally foamed. If water got under the liner, the foam would float. If the floor is rough and uneven, it would need attention before setting the new liner. This would normally be extra money also.

A different style liner track would need to be installed that would allow the new coping stone to be set. The liner would still go into a track.

Thanks again Scott. Your comment on foam floor padding is exactly what I was told from the one company I had out last week for an estimate. However, as we have a "sports pool" where the deepest spots are only 5 1/2 ft. and we play lots of volleyball, I thought it would be nice to have a cushioned bottom. It appears you would recommend against it. Also, you appear to state that the only variable as to whether you use stone or plastic coping, is the track used. Therefore, if we couldnt afford to do the stone coping now, but just replaced the liner, would we only have to change the TRACK if x years down the road, we decided to install the stone ?

Padding the floor would cause the liner to move from people jumping and twisting. Laying flat on the pool floor is best since it stays put.

What is in place for coping now? If the liner is more than a year old, if you changed the coping, the liner would go too. Liners don't like being dry after being exposed to water. The plasticizers loose elasticity. The liner will want to return to it's original size and not be able to be restretched properly, resulting in reduced life, wrinkles, stretch marks, etc,,,. The older the liner, the greater the chance of a tear too.

WRT to the material the coping and track are made of, metal or plastic work. Typically its aluminum and plastic.

akraus - who did you end up using? Were you happy with them, and can you give me a ballpark cost? I'm in your position now. Need a new liner, Free form pool about the same size, "deep" end only about 4'10", also in Westchester. Wondering about the coping too.

I have never seen a 20mil liner in an inground pool - is that a common thing in the USA? Not even an option people would offer here in Canada. 20 mil in above ground pools only here.
