please, please, please help me with stain!!

Last summer DH built a 900 square foot deck. We stained it with I believe Behr Redwood, which was supposed to have a nice reddish color. WELL, it turned out a deep cherry color and now between the dogs and the kids the stain looks like crap.

I purchased some stuff at Home Depot last week to help strip the current stain, but if anyone can suggest a new stain that would be great!! If you have pics, that would be even better. TIA

Did you use solid or semi-transparent? Oil or latex?

It would help to see a picture of the entire plant or, at the least, a description of the entire plant. The 6th (I think) image -- darkish leaves -- may be a flowering crabapple. I definitely root for natural. You're going to have one orange house in time. And definitely one through-out. Now, since you lost on the finish, can you win on the stain? Let him know you acquiesced to a top coat that will yellow over time. Products (and particularly any oil-based products) with -uranthane yellow. Period. Red oak + yellowing floor coating? PLUS your reddish cabinets? For me that would be totally overwhelming at some point. I'd be eyeing paint and I'm willing to bet your DH would faint at the thought of painting those cabinets. I would have chosen a stain without red, such as Special Walnut (one coat isn't dark and looks GREAT on oak) or even Jacobean if you prefer a darker stain. But that's just me. I'm fussing with my pine kitchen floor that will yellow naturally. I'm probably going to use a Bona HD High Traffic sealer because it's not supposed to yellow. I'm trying to get a stain color that doesn't turn "honey" as the wood oxidizes.

Neutral isn't going to be easy. You need to start with a wood that doesn't contain red-brown tones. That's the best way. Your photo = gray/black in colour. It is the GRAY that is reading 'neutral'. Now that you have red oak, you will need to get going on painting out the walls BEFORE you push forward with this. The inspiration photo would NOT be enough information for someone offering a stain option. In many people's eyes, the refinisher ACHIEVED a lighter version of your photo. And just so you know, upto 30% of MALES have issues with COLOUR BLINDNESS! Yep. That means 1 in 3 men in the trades have a mild to severe version of colour blindness. Some have very minor amounts of colour missing (ie. cannot see orange as a crisp colour nor green in it's thousands of variations.....oh dear). Please, before you ask your refinished to offer anything else (other than a coat of finish on your samples) PLEASE PRIME THE WALLS WHITE!

@nhb22 I absolutely love the contrast of your flooring against the white & your countertops ( which are Beautiful btw) My friend has them. Mine im worried about bc of the blue in there ! I'm hoping it doesn't look like a big blue iceberg lol That's why I " tried" going w a paint color that had no blue or undertones! i didn't have much a selection to choose from w the quartzite. I almost got quartz but idk I thought it " might" be trendy w the look I was going for & guess wanted a natural stone. I see them everywhere now & kinda kick myself but ?? Now I need a backsplash & love subway tiles what color are yours

Behr is junk, on the upside its pretty easy to get off unless they have changed the stuff after the class action.

Use a stipper/oxalic acid wash and put on twp 116 or 516. John

We purchased Quick Fix Deck Finish Remover. We have not used it yet. John-do you think what you recommened would work better? I don't know what twp 116 or 516 is.

I am not sure if it is oil based, but I am going to say that I think it was. I looked to see if we have any left, but we don't.

I use the Ken' stuff. www.restor-a-deck.com . Never used quick fix,never even heard of it.

TWP is an outdoor finish,I use 116 rustic in some states only the 516 rustic can be sold. J

I need to put something on both some pressure treated lumber decking and some cedar decking. Has any one used Deckscapes sold at Sherwin Williams. I read it was good. Otherwise my neigbhor used Behr and liked it in the past but I don't read such great things about it on this forum.
