You should probibly ask your agent, I think it could be diffrent from state to state. Here are some things to think about, if insurance is in your name only, it "might"not cover him if he is driving.You may be able to have insurance only cover you as driver, then his driving record would not be an issue.
If you think you have made a mistake putting him on the title, is the loan in both names?, if not you can have title changed to your name only, however he would more than likely have to sign off.
Not in the insurance buisness, but in selling and financing used cars... again you should visit with your agent.

I don't know about insurance but you can have financial problems with his name on the car. I would ask your boy friend to sign papers allowing you to take his name off the car now while the two of you are on good terms. It ties the two of you together legally. If he should be sued part or all of the car could be claimed by the person suing him, depending on how the title is written up. Also problems if he files bankruptcy or has outstanding debts. You can't sell it without his signature, if he leaves you, you can't sell the car. He can probably borrow money on it. I'm not sure of all of this, a consultation with an attorney is what you need. He can draw up papers for your boyfriend to sign releasing his claim on the car.

I'd think you need to get the right answer for your locale, from your agent or your insurance company. But, I, too think you need to address the problem of the title of the car--it's just asking for trouble to have something that large (read expensive) that would need to be sorted out IF the relationship failed. Not suggesting that is a possibility, BUT the rules are different for unmarried couples than for married, and it can be much more of a hassle that way. Just not worth putting yourselves in that position (one that seems to always annoy judges, when those cases come up). I agree with the person who said it would be best to take care of that now rather than later. Frankly, I don't even see any reason for jointly titling a car--my husband and I have been married 38 years, and have always had our own cars titled in our own names. They're insured together on one policy, but titled separately

In order to insure something, you must have an insurable interest in it. If your name is on it, you have an insurable interest.

The car is paid for. I am sure I can ask him to have his name removed...but it would be awkward. It is not like we are having any problems or anything so I'd rather not worry him that way.
The car was a moment of weakness on my part - not pressure on his. I will not borrow any money together or put his name on the house. Even of we were to marry, at this point in my life there would be a pre-nup.( and he will be emotionally rocked by that when I tell him)
I am mostly concerned if there are any legal aspects to not listing him on my insurance policy as a driver - which he rarely drives - added to the fact that he is legally part owner of the car.
If I ask my agent, I think they go right for the jugular and up the rates wherever they can... and it is very difficult to decipher what is required by law.
If there are legal ramifications it would be very easy to ask him to have his name taken of the title/registration.

Salgal - can you use the insurance coverage as an excuse to remove his name from the title? You could tell him that insurance agent suggested it as a means to keeping your rates down.

With it in both names, any tickets or accidents can count against you, but again, insurance laws vary from state to state. Does he have it covered on his policy? Are you insured by the same company/agent?

I sense that things aren't all that great if you expect problems on a possible pre-nup. When in doubt, CYA. I'd say get it into one name, whether that's yours or his, doesn't matter. You could ask for it as a birthday or Christmas present if it makes you feel more comfortable.

Insuring two people could be more than insuring one. I'd expect it to be higher and with it in his name he has every right to drive it. You could call a different agent with the same company and talk to them but the pragmatic side of me says you are taking some unnecessary risks and if you want to continue, you should at least insure yourself.

Again, states vary, but here you could have an issue with your insurance if they find out it's in both names and only one insured. Here, I for instance will be covered by my insurance on anyone's car I drive and anyone is covered on mine. But they're also very fussy about disclosure. I bought a new(er) vehicle and parked it. I decided to put comprehensive on it after a couple months and they got all bent out of shape because I didn't tell them immediately. They figure if you don't tell them, you're hiding something. This kind of ticked me off since I wasn't driving it (it was garage and not used), but apparently there's something in the policy that I have to tell them if I buy a vehicle, whether or not I insure it. They also figure if you have a vehicle, you drive it and if there's other drivers in the house you have to let them know, whether or not they're allowed to drive the vehicle. Sub-25ers especially.

It sounds like you have multiple vehicles. Depending on your ages, driving records, insurance and such, you could have enough discounts that the difference, if any wouldn't be much.

The other option if you really don't want to talk to your agent is to read your policy and see what it says in there about it.

Confer with your insurance agent. I would think there would be no problem so long as you named the other party as an alternte driver.

Just 14 years experience here. He has his own insurance, you have yours. Unless the company your insured with excludes drivers, you have no problems. You can insure the vehicle because you have an insurable interest in the vehicle, he could insure it as well. If your insured with a preferred company they generally allow permissive drivers and they will be covered. Check your policy for who is covered. I tell my customers the same thing, they gave me permission to take their car to the store for milk, I am covered because they are giving me permission to do so. They aren't going to call us and ask us to add me to their policy so I can run to the store. If your not comfortable with this information then call your agent, beleive it or not we don't all want to increase premiums. Worst case scenario, your agent may ask if your SO is covered on his own and what company.

thanks two.2...he has his own insurance, different company. He(nor I)has no current or past issues in regard to driving record. We both have multiple vehicles, I have a truck and motorcycle, he has 2 trucks and we jointly own the car.
I was just worried about whether or not I was being dishonest or fradulent with insurance carrier and/or state.

Cynic, I suppose you could derive some apprehension my part - it mostly comes from the fact that I am divorced and although it went relatively smoothly - I do not want to buy my house (potentially) a 3rd time. So while I do trust my current SO, live and learn... and (like you said) CYA.

You bought the car with 100% of your money, but you were being kind, considerate, romantic in putting both of your names on the title? I really think you want to reconsider that.

Well, beyond following Cynic's advice, this is what I'd say: Protect your own credit rating (which obviously comes from many sources), and protect your own property. And if you want your insurer to protect his property, ask him to put together a photo/video inventory of his stuff that's in your house, estimate the worth and then have him pay the additional cost. Love and money can be a rocky course sometimes, I'm sure you've found.
