Exposed Aggregate Concrete Wall with Waterfall?

Well, we're still debating our pool build, and what to include. I know that I definitely want some sheer descent waterfalls, to be used on a raised wall. The problem I have is that I don't like the appearance of too much brick/paver, and I don't want a rock waterfall (I did but not anymore). So, I was thinking that an exposed aggregate concrete wall with three sheer descents would look completely different from anything I've seen to this point. That's the problem - why haven't I seen this? I think it would look awesome, but is it not feasible? We live in Michigan, so weather is definitely a factor when considering materials. Also, I was going to partially recess a Hot Springs spa and encase it in the same exposed aggregate. Our decking will likely be a stamped concrete to compliment the exposed aggregate concrete. Thanks for your opinions and suggestions.

WRT to the Hot Tub, ensure there is room and a way in for a service person to get at the access panel. I generally try to discourage people from doing this sort of thing. At some point, a pump or a plumbing fitting will require access. The concrete will create the need to pull it out for service.

I'll leave the raised wall questions for the better qualified builders.

Thanks, Scott. Yes, we'll be leaving an access panel (which is actually going to be a step), that will allow 2' of access when removed for service purposes. Do you believe that 2' is sufficient for servicing?

I don't think the vertical layout of your block wall is the problem, that's the way they are supposed to be. If it is failing perhaps not enough rebar with concrete fill was used? Here the alkaline soil combined with water is destructive to concrete and a special mix has to be used but that may not be your problem. A nice look used here that is more expensive than regular block but a less than real stone is stone faced block and it is zero maintenance. Since your neighbor is going to be looking at this wall perhaps he would help pay the difference between a cheaper wall and one he would enjoy looking at? If your aggregate stoop is concrete with rocks seeded on top or brushed to expose internal rocks then you can put mortar and pavers over the top of it. Acrylic resin polymer is generally used. Mounding could be tricky and expensive. IMO matching your concrete color would be easier if it's a big job. The company who made your stones should be able to provide you with the recipe. You might have to tweak it and make sample bricks until you get it just right.

I find myself in a similar position. We hired a local company to remove a 45’ x 8’ patio slab and do stamped concrete wood plank. We even paid an additional $500 for a pumper truck to bring the concrete over the house to the back to free the two guys up to work the 9 yards of concrete. Long story short, the final product is concrete that is over stamped (rough) on one side and a light stamp on the other. There are 4 low spots against the house where water pools and sits when wet. Its a covered patio on the lowest level so I think its only a visual thing. the one stair to acess the patio tips forward and is crooked. they also over covered the release on the step so its black compared to the brown on the rest. The over all stamp job has alot of flaws smudges and drags in it but Ii can get around it. My question is this. The entire job cost $6300 and I invested 18 hours of my own time helping load old concrete, help backfill dirt and remove forms. I’m not trying to rip anyone off but what should be the penalty? I don’t feel its bad enough to rip out but God willing I’ll have 30 years that I’ll look at it and know it isn’t right. All suggestions are welcome.

In my last home, on the advice of a landscape architect, we used pami pebbles for our aggregate walkway/patio and had the concrete mix tinted a medium brown-reddish color. It was a beautiful combination, especially in contrast with plant materials and a flagstone and brick accent wall. Got many compliments over the years. I didn't find it hard to walk on with bare feet because the pami pebbles are so smooth. We had our backyard patio installed a few years later by a different company and was talked out of using the same materials. Never liked the patio as much as the front yard - in looks or bare-foot comfort.

No, it's not enough room unless your serviceman is a midget.

It will also be likely to flood in a heavy rain. The motors don't like being submerged, even partially. The foam insulation will get wet and mold/mildew will form in places you can't get at.

I don't like saying it but I have to. IMHO, sinking it into the ground, surrounded by concrete is not a good idea.

There are a number of custom skinning products that can be used if you don't like the look of the side panels on the spa and want something that better matches the decor and color schemes you like for your backyard paradise.

While I wish you were wrong, Scott, your opinion matches that of my husband's. He and I had quite a lovely "husband and wife" discussion about this last night, and based on your most recent post, it looks like he's going to win this one. Of course, we'll be back on with many other questions. Building a pool, with all of the decisions involved, is almost as bad as building a house. In the end, though, I know we'll both be very pleased with the outcome.

I can't believe it's been over three months since my original post, and the exposed aggregate wall will finally be built on Friday. This has been a very looooong project, but at least our pool is in, heater works, lights work, filter works and the deck pour finally takes place tomorrow. So far, so good, other than the many delays and days without anyone here working. I'm so glad to be almost finished with this project. I'll post pics when everything is finished.
