I hear ya!! Gas here was 3.76 on tuesday when i filled up,last night at the same station it was 3.89,hiway robbery if you ask me.

We have a great 99 cent store here that carries fresh fruit,veggies,has a frozen food section plus all the other stuff.It's very clean,and i have never found anything outdated there and it's been here for several years.It's always crowded in there.

The other day i was in wal mart and was going to get bagels,it was 3.38 for 6 bagels at WM,so i didn't buy them.Got the same brand yesterday at the 99 cent store for 99 cents.So guess where i go first,before going to the regular grocery store.

Sure wish we had one of those 99¢ stores around here. Remember going to one when we visited DGD a couple of years ago in FL. Never heard of one selling items like that before.

Ran into our local grocery store for a bag of hamburger buns and they had some 'on sale for $1.99'. I did manage to find some for $1.09. I expect higher prices since it's the only store close, 4 mi. or so from home, otherwise it's a 20 mi. trip to a town with a bigger store. Sure didn't know buns had gone up that much, but should have as bread is skyrocketing. Read somewhere that there is wheat flour shortage or something to that effect.

DH has gone to the grocery store with me for the last 2 weeks....he was amazed at the prices. It was good for him to see why the grocery bills are so high. LOL...he usually couldn't care less, but his overtime has been cut and I have been really trying to cut back. He says it's easy if you apply some restraints. Now he knows what I'm complaining about. I buy all out meat for the month at Costco and only go once a week for the necessities....still I have been spending about 150.00....no meat! My biggest complaint lately is toilet paper and paper towels....they have really gotten so high. Our market offers more of the larger bulk packages and less of the 4 packs. So we're pretty much forced to buy bulk and pay more at that visit. I hate the fact that is it literally money down the toilet! I try to use coupons and do well with them..but still it's a lot!

Gas is $3.40/gallon and milk is $4.00 gallon here in KCMO, and I'm retired - guess my goose will be cooked for SURE!

Kathy, where did you find it at 3.40 yesterday? I bought gas at Swinomish yesterday for 3.47. It was 3.45 at Costco and AmPm in Burlington. Ampm here was 3.49 when I left the island at around 10 am.

Grocery prices are ridiculous in the local stores..
However, the meat I bought at costco hasn't gone up. Boneless Pork loin 1.99lb,I got one that was around 7-8lbs~makes 3-4 meals even for a family of 5.(It might have been 1.79 a year ago.) Ground beef 2.99lb and rib roast steaks..a very amazing low of 4.99lb.
10lbs of sugar was under $5. Butter was 4lbs for under $7. Eggs were 3.25 for 18 the Vita Eggs. 2 dozen regular was 3.15. I buy 3 packs of 18 for 2 weeks. I do alot of baking and we eat breakfast for dinner usually once a week, and every Sunday we have a "full" breakfast.

I can't wait for the garden to start producing..and I'm praying that my apple trees produce this year too..Last year was a total bust! But this freak snow storm better not hurt them!..thank goodness the trees are only budding out leaves, not flowers yet!

Terri..I bought my groceries at Safeway, and got a 20 cent a gallon discount. There are just the 2 of us so I try not to go to Costco as it takes us so long things get freezer burns before we use them up.I do buy our cleaning and paper supplies there!
DH started the garden, got the onions in and tomatoes in the windows.
We have TONS of fruit on all of our trees each year..I'll remember you when thing are ripe!

Everything will continue to go up because of the price of gas. Most everything goes across the country by trucks. Have you seen the price of diesel?!?

One of the best ways to save money is to stop buying so-called convienence foods.
Stop eating out of boxes and cans, and make your own soup, own desserts, own spaghetti sauce, etc. using in-season, fresh vegetables and fruits.

I went yesterday to Walmart and each week I am just amazed. I am buying less so I can really reduce the "throw away" factor that happens in our home. I would rather buy less of things and see if we actually use it up during the week. We still go every week so it doesn't matter. I am tired of throwing away yogurts or bread or bagels because the kids "tired" of them that week. I saw a 12 pack of toilet paper was about $9.00.. I couldn't believe it..

On a side note to all this, I work in the Human Resource dept of a hospital, we are getting alot more calls from bill collectors looking to track down employees.. we never forward calls, we just tell them we do not forward calls in and to call them at home.. In addition, the woman who takes care of the 401/403 plan made a comment that alot more people are cutting back on what they put in or are withdrawing money... I think it is going to worse unfortunately...

whidbeykathy...I'm glad you mentioned Safeway. It was on the news the other night that they were stopping their gas discount if you buy over $50. (I think that was the amount). I passed up Safeway a couple of days ago because I thought it had already gone into effect. I will remember tomorrow when I go to town. Thanks.

On my trip to Wal-Mart yesterday, I noticed several Hybrid Cars in the lot. One was the Toyota, it sure looked nice, I told Main Man I want one for Mother's Day. He said "Your not my Mother".

Our Gas Station has gone up in the past week like $.02 a day.

My DH is diabetic, so we don't have deserts..
Add up the cost to make spaghetti sauce, or buy a jar for $1.00..I made soup today, we'll be haunted by it ! 2 people +1 pot of soup, it'll never be gone!
I buy only on sale , cooking for 2 rules out a lot of BIG cooking, unless you want to eat it over and over and over until freezer burn wins.

Wish we could afford a hybrid car, we parked the Bronco and are driving the GEO. I went to church today, and was afraid to look at gas prices.
My point being I worry how people are managing who are on limited incomes. It's hard for us,and I just can't imagine a single Mom or senior citizen.

I'm one of those senior citizens and i see a lot of us at the 99 cent stores,and i noticed the clientele there is getting younger every day,so not just affecting our seniors anymore.We're all being hit with these ridiculous prices.Where will it end and when???

oooh Safeway gas discount..that makes sense..It was 3.59 at Safeway at around 2 today. I earned the 20cent discount today too. Hubby's car likes Safeway gas. She that made him happy.

I have cabbage, strawberries and lettuce blend in the garden planted. Friday I picked up more strawberries, garlic, onion, another lettuce start and some seed potatoes.
Picked up some seeds at Walmart for a few things tonight too.

Whidbeykathy, there are only 2 of us (seniors) and we get all our meat at Sam's. We bought a Seal-A-Meal and it keeps meat fresh for at least six months. I also make soup in big batches and seal it up in 3-cup servings. Lots of leftovers get sealed. You'd be surprised how fresh it tastes. Plus we like Sam's meat better than the grocery chains.

Kathy, it's not easy for a one income family of 5. Our Stimulus check will actually allow the boys to still have swim lessons this summer, travel for their summer baseball, and pay for Football season. THANK GOD!
It will sit in the savings account and be used as we go along the next few months. Otherwise, we'd really have to reorganize the grocery budget and meals.

Besides everything everyone mentioned above, I have really noticed a jump in the bread aisle (someone mentioned a wheat shortage & I think I heard that too). English muffins were $3.38 for a 6 pk. Those were Thomas', which I love, but the store brand was in the $1.25 range so guess which ones I bought. Sure notice the difference in taste but I refuse to pay that much for something that I eat & no one else.

I had a dream last night that gas was $7.47!! YIKES! I was trying to figure out where to walk to get lunch!

I'm sick of going to the grocery store and seeing the signs that say because of bad weather/fuel costs/etc milk, eggs and bread etc etc are all higher costs lately. At our regular store milk costs $3.99 a gallon!! Worse then gas!! And we like to drink lots of milk in this house! Now I try to either wait until we go to Costco ($3.19) or Safeway 2 for $7.

There have also been numerous stories in the local paper about the food banks going dry lately. This is a bad time anyway, because people tend to forget after the holidays. But now there is more demand and less donations! So sad!
