wow! the lilac hedge is beautiful this morning!

ooooooooooooh lilacs! Such a lovely smell. I got one last fall, and planted it, but so far, no blooms. Yes, I know, I have to be patient... but that is not one of my strong points.

Okay here it is guys, a three year tree from Four Winds! It's a fukushu kumquat. And i love it! It already had perfect shape so i didn't prune any. I picked all the orange fruit except for one. The foliage is really dense and beautiful. The leaves don't really smell, but that fruit tastes so sweet (for a kumquat!) Definitely the best one I've had! Thank you gardenweb for showing me how to successfully grow container citrus, you all are a great community. IM only 19, by I've done some stuff mentioned here, like attaining ingredients for the gritty mix. Fir bark- pets Mart Crushed granite- tractor supply co 100% diatomaceous earth- o reillys auto parts, oil absorber. My key lime from seed sure appreciates the gritty mix as it was the first one to go in it and has elongated and put out new leaves the day since! Everyone should have WELL draining soil, it does magic! Best of luck, from MONTANA!

Basements are not rare in my area of the south (TN). Many, I would even venture to say most, homes here have a garage, but many houses have basements. This is our third home and we have had a basement in each house. On this and the last house we had a basement with a garage on the main (living) level. First house was combo garage/basement. Jane - there was some damage in Knoxville, but I'm about 30 minutes from there. That's where I work and where my dad and my sister and her husband live. We had about 40 windows out of the building where I work (college campus) and lots of downed trees, limbs, etc. My sister had a couple of storm windows broken as well as hail damage to one vehicle. My dad did FINALLY get power back on Friday evening (was without for 5 days), only after a neighbor called and complained that she had felt sick after breathing fumes from the ruptured transformer on their property. Within 30 minutes there were 6 trucks and just a bit later from another area, a special truck and crew that removed the transformer and dug up soil around it. Scary. My dad and others on his end of the road have wells - so water has been tested. This is a small county road - only 8 houses - all with acreage. Those further back from the main road have wells. Thanks for asking. My brother is in Ft. Oglethorpe, GA which is close to Cleveland and Chattanooga and he and his wife were quite upset at the amount of damage. She did her graduate work at Lee University in Cleveland and they lived there before moving to Ft. Oglethorpe. tina

Thank you all for the check-ins! It sounds like most of you are able to stay reasonably cool, more or less, in the house. Wanttoretire, sounds like the whole east coast is getting it bad. Any forecast of it cooling down at all? I don't think I knew anybody growing up who had A/C in the car. Riding in the back seat to our little family car with my two brothers and sister was horrible on those many hot days in central CA! Jay/mushcreek, yikes! That does sound depressing! I do remember you talking about your super insulation when you were building the house. The Hardi board is pretty solid insulation in and of itself, IIRC. Glad to hear about the mini split, since I'm planning to do that. llucy, glad to hear you're cool by comparison, lol! I remember being in Daytona for a race back around 1997, and it was over 90 and pouring, torrential rain! I'd never experienced that. Cooper, my brother lives in New Mexico, is a geochemist at the nuclear power plant. When they moved there a couple of years ago, they bought a house without a pool, thinking they'd put one in later. Never got around to it. So a few weeks ago a house came up for sale just around the corner from them. Pool included. So they bought it, quick close, and are now enjoying the pool, haha! Chris/Shades, again, good to hear about the mini split! My power bill was $59 last month, but I'm sure it will be more this month, because I've been running the window A/C and the fans more. Lass, yep, me too with the rain yesterday. I'm in Cheney. I was in Spokane Valley, and now from Cheney it's about 45 minutes to Post Falls, ID. So we're fairly close to each other. Today was lovely! Steph, so great to hear from you! I'm glad you're OK. I do the same thing, both to save gas, which seems to be going up daily here, and to avoid going out in the heat, which isn't heat at all compared to 110 in AZ! But I try to do all my errands in one or two days out of the week, I only grocery shop once a week on one of those days, then I can stay home, mostly inside, for a few days. Since I work from home, it also helps me stay on schedule. Hope everything's OK with the CT scan! murraysmom, I don't blame the dogs, haha! Sounds like things are under control with the A/C and the fans. Wow, I've never seen that iPhone message either! It must have been really, really hot. Good thing it didn't melt! I guess the watchword of the day is "stay cool!" :-)

Family photos in dining room: a designer’s faux pas or is it ok?

I love family photos. However, (and this is just me) I get a creepy feeling when they are put in such a prominent spot that for a lot of the time I am in a room, the whole family is staring at me! My beloved SO has LARGE family photos of his whole family on a shelving unit right across from our bed in the bedroom, and it is a small room so the edge of the bed is relatively close to the shelving unit. His whole clan is always staring at me, when I go to bed at night, when I'm changing into my jammies or getting dressed in the morning, and when I wake up. I wouldn't want my clan up there, that's for sure, but different strokes for different folks. He likes seeing them all the time and I am just splitting hairs with that creepy feeling. Better than in the bathroom I guess! My dad has a small photo of my deceased mother in a prominent spot in the living room, and that doesn't bother me, so I guess it depends. I have a mirror in my dining room and hate it because I hate looking at myself while eating. I would love a wall of family in a dining room, but maybe not where they were always staring down at me while eating. A montage of smaller photos that one passes by on the way to the table--wonderful. But really, just some random thoughts. As many have said, there is no one right or wrong way if you like it that's all that matters. Also, there are some frames that you can buy that mix photos with design and sometimes sayings, those would look fab in your room. You could fit a little montage on the right side of the doorway. I almost bought a piece at the local big box that was a clock where you could put a photo in every time slot. I also think that "mixing and matching" photo exhibits in one room is probably a no go too. So for example, putting that clock in our bedroom along with the photos on the shelves might bee too much of a good thing.

It doesn't show in the picture, but the hedge is over 20 feet long. DH cut little branches from his Dad's bush and stuck them in the ground. About 10 years later, this is the result! So much for me telling him they would never grow!

They're beautiful, and I can imagine how wonderful they smell. I just love plants propagated from friends and loved ones' plants.

That's one thing I miss about Chicago there were Lilacs all over. When I was a kid we used to go to the Lilac

My lilacs won't be blooming for another month. I do love them, though, and they are from DH's family farm.

Wisteria wasn't near as pretty as it has been. I know it's a vine/weed, but it is so pretty when in bloom.

This year, it's just a dull drab color.

Oh, whidbeykathy I am inhaling deeply and I can smell them, they smell heavenly. I love them. I have another month or so before mine are blossomed.

Lovely! Ours are almost done now, darn it.

When I was a kid in WI, the lilacs always bloomed at my birthday time. Mom would get me a cake decorated with lilacs on it, made from frosting, it was always so beautiful, since purple is my favorite color (hers, too.) That's one of my most favorite childhood memories, every May, getting a beautiful cake from my mom and sniffing lilacs while we were outside playing in the finally warmer weather.

ACHOO! They are beautiful! ACHOO! Remind me not to breathe next time.
We have lilacs, both purple and white, but none close to the house. A few years ago I started a hedge of them along the road and threw in some day lilys in the mix. Slowly filling in.

I am jealous too...I haven't smelled a lilac since I left Iowa, which was 30 years ago. How I miss them!

Your lilacs are so beautiful. I have one way out back but it is a different variety, maybe a french lilac. Anyway it does not smell like a lilac should. Love the fragrance of lilacs. So many things are hard to grow when you have black walnut trees. Beautiful!
