Refinishing purpleheart/ipe deck - replacement for WoodZotic?
Comments (1)David Man!!! how ya doing?? Deck HoundIt turned out the ol Ken was relabeling drift on over to www.woodrich-brand.com You know me I am still with twp. Both these product are resin base and act a lot the same way. WR takes a little longer to set up but I tried it on my staircase at Butler Manor last year no problems at all still looks the same as the day it went on. I always wondered how those PH 4x4 post held up and did you get them straighted up. I do remember you did have a job refinishing around the alum balusters. That is one super fine project. Comments (16)Jan, I have built a lot of Ipe decks, but I have never used a "hidden fastener" system. Although I have no experience with the various systems, I do know Ipe. Some boards will be bowed, and can be straightened...but will a few plastic clips be able to hold them in place? Sun/rain/snow will conspire to make those boards want to move, cup and shrink. When they do shrink and cup, those clips won't be too hidden, and you may end up with loose boards that rattle when you walk on them. I face screw all of my decks (2 per joist). I primarily use the brown colored #8 "Headcote" trimhead stainless steel screws...2.5". They are pricey, but worth every penny, as they blend in with the Ipe very nicely. I plug about 10% of my decks for clients that want truly hidden fasteners. When I plug, I use a beefier screw (#10 2 3/8" dekker screws from mcfeelys.com) with a bugle head...they will hold Ipe in place like no other screw. Plugging is time consuming, but I build in Brooklyn, and urban decks are much smaller than those outside of the city. You said your deck is large, but never gave dimensions. Face screwing may or may not be more expensive or time consuming than clip installation, but it is the best way to hold down Ipe. Do you deserve the best? steve...See MoreExpanding Ipe Deck Gaps - Proper Installation Advice needed
Comments (24)Hi digm - sorry it's taken me this long to respond, I didn't receive a notification email of your posting! About 3/4 of the deck on the far side gets heavy duty sun exposure about 6 hours a day and as the day goes on (and the world turns) the other deck (along the windows) gets the same amount of afternoon sun, so yes, it gets lots of sun exposure, also we have lots of wind blown rain here. I mispoke in my previous posting - the ipe was AIR dried, not kiln dried, I don't know what I was thinking when I said that. yes, the 'Mini EbTy' (actual name on the box) I believe are the 3/32. They worked great and yes, the instructions say to use the glue. I searched out several different web forums re EbTy and found most people who reported using the EbTy clips did NOT use the glue. Only the most fastidious of the lot used the glue. I can tell you, if I had used it I would most likely still be out there permanently stuck to those boards!!! I also learned an entirely new language while installing that went something like this @!!$X*%!....:) While the end product looks beautiful (use a cleaner and brightener then apply Messmer's per instructions) it was a real challenge for me to get the boards to submit. It's a pleasure to look at, relax on and was well worth the effort. Pat...See MoreIPE or Other Sustainably Harvested Wood For Deck
Comments (4)We used Ipe and are almost done.. putting the handrail /cable rail system today and finishing it Friday I hope. The stain /uv protection will go on in spring. Heres a link to some pics on the porch and decks forum where I suggest you do more research. Lots of threads on many different materials. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/porch/msg1110331628764.html?7...See Moreaidan_m
