Are you afraid to let your cleaning lady clean your new kitchen?
Comments (35)I went through this too, but will never let Katie go. She is more like a friend than a cleaning lady. My kids adore her. She was a doctor in Albania and came to this country and had to start over doing anything she could to make money, including waitressing, babysitting, and cleaning houses. Cleaning is where she found she could make the most money, but in the meantime she put herself through nursing school, while working fulltime cleaning houses. She graduated last spring and now has a full time nursing job but still comes to help me when she can. Some weeks she can't come at all and every week the day changes, but she always comes in the afternoon so that on that day my son can take his nap in his bed instead of in the car (since I have to pick my daughter up at 3 ). She loves to cook like me. She brings me recipes and I share mine with her. She lets my son follow her around the house and gives him little jobs to do. When my daughter is around she does the same for her ... she'll have my daughter pick up her stuffed animals, etc or bring laundry downstairs. I like this, because I too worry about the kids thinking they don't have to pick up after themselves. Anyway, post renovation, I researched different products and am using different things now, but it was just a one time short conversation about the new stuff we are using (most particularly, this Bonax wood flooring cleaning system). She knows that the new house is my baby and I did tell her that I would take care of certain aspects (like cleaning the Butcherblock counter). She'll move on eventually. She is still cleaning because she is saving up money for her wedding next year. She is such an impressive young woman. So personable, hard working and caring. She is so there for me when I need her. She babysits in a pinch (or gets her sister to babysit for me). I hope I won't have to do without her until I am done with the classes I am taking because she is part of the infrastructure that is allowing this to happen for me. sorry so long winded but I feel so fortunate for the situation I have and wouldn't give it up....See MoreHow do you clean your stainless appliances?
Comments (17)I picked up a stainless steel cleaning mitt at BBB almost 2 years ago and forgot I had it. I just pulled it out and seems to work great - it is microfiber and silver in color - not sure of the brand. Just use water and wipe. Of course, my Miele never shows fingerprints but the other appliances do pop lovely fingerprints. Fortunately my DH knows how to use a handle but my DB hasn't figured this out yet and have to do some work after he leaves....See MoreWhat do you resolve to do differently in your new kitchen?
Comments (26)I resolve to yell at my family more :-P That is, we need to get in the habit again of putting dishes directly in the dishwasher instead of letting them pile up on the counter/sink and then loading all at once. This largely involves kid-training (you kwim). I have decided the kids are old enough now for an after-dinner chore - little one will wipe the table, big one will sweep the floor. (Mental note - buy cute wiping cloths for little one. Big one already gets a brand new broom....) All of my "new kitchen resolutions" have to do with less clutter - the pre-kitchen purge definitely helped, I think I will be putting half the stuff back in and half the stuff in storage. But I know it will creep in again. I agree with those who said more wiping/sweeping/cleaning in general. Now that I have a very dark floor, it shows every speck of dust, and my habits will have to change, but sooo worth it. And with my new recycling pull-out, I should be able to put things directly in, instead of being in counter-limbo, but this will also require a resolution for DH and I to be on-top of taking out trash/compost/recycling mid-week, instead of the weekly avalanche we were putting up with before. That recycling station alone will save my marriage!...See MoreHow do you clean your hardwood kitchen floors? (X-posted on cleaning)
Comments (14)rebeccamomof123 your floors are lovely. If you like the way your floors look, I wouldn't have them refinished now. You know now that when the time comes you'll have to completely refinish them, but there's no reason you have to rush into it since they obviously are in good shape. I'd stop using the steam mop and Murphy's and start using the damp microfiber mop. We had oak floors refinished in our last house and I used Bona and the occasional steam mop. After 6 years, the satin poly was starting to wear thin in a few spots. Our new hardwood floors are waiting to be installed right now and I don't plan to ever use the steam mop on them!...See Moretexas_cajun
