Hot water heater doesn't seem to hold a lot of hot water

We have a 40 gallon hot water heater that has no problem heating water, but for some reason it doesn't seem like it heats *enough* water. When we take showers, there is barely enough hot water for one person to take a shower... and we don't take long showers. And this is any time of the day, even in the morning when we first get up, hence when no hot water has been used recently to wash dishes... etc. etc...

Considering there are only two people in our household, my wife and I, this seems kind of odd.

I have it set hotter than the "warm" setting, but not quite on full blast either.

Is my water heater capacity too small or is this a potential sign that the unit is starting to go bad. I believe it is less than 10 years old and it appears to be working fine.

Does anybody have any insight or ideas to trouble shoot this thing?
