new radiators and the unsightly plumbing - help?

I posted this over at the Home Decorating forum, looking for ideas to camouflage my new radiators and the unsightly plumbing.

The old rad was removed along with two others - the installation is the same for all of them. They were non-functioning or leaking old rads, or I would never have replaced them.

Is this what the installation is supposed to look like? Is there anything that should have been done differently. My old house looks rather sad with all the new orange hoses!

I think I need to start planning some rad covers...

Did you discuss the installation details with your plumber/heating contractor before installation? Were you going for the lowest bid you could find? Were you paying attention while the work was being done? IMO, this is a really substandard installation. I'd have put a stop to this at the first radiator.

At this point, I don't know what you can do besides having another contractor with some sensitivity to design considerations -- redo the work, or install radiator covers.

Both replies were very helpful. When I opened the hex COLD water shot out right away... no air in the line, but no heat either. I chipped away the paint on the inlet valve and opened it with a vice grip. The only strange thing is that I assumed "opening" the valve meant turning it to the left (counter-clockwise) like an outdoor spigot... Turning the valve clockwise opened it and I heard water begin to flow instantly. Thanks to you all I now have heat in my bathroom! ;-)

Is it still leaking or has it oxidized enough to stop the leak? If so, paint over it and forget about it. Waiting for oxidation is what the manufacturer suggested. I don't like it, because there is no ETA. Meanwhile, our new wooden floor is about to start rotting under it. If it's a pipe threaded plug that's leaking, redo it. The manufacturer is giving us the plugs, but the plumber wants several thousands of dollars for that job. Supposedly, the old ones need to be "drilled" out... Perhaps, we can get someone else to do it for (much) less, but it is still incredibly frustrating.

It can be done, but it really should be done by someone who knows exactly what they're doing and who has experience in working with old heating systems. Probably the easiest thing to do would be to remove the radiators, pull out the floor boards, put new over-length stubs on the pipes, and then relay the floor. When you have the final floor in place, you can have the plumber or heating person back in to trim the stubs to the proper length and reattach the radiators.

YouÂre not crazy and I can understand the desire for aesthetics and comfort. But be sure to understand that you cannot just install these in place of the fin tube if it was piped in a series loop. You see the first radiator will be hot and everyone after that colder and colder. The distribution system will need to be changed some like monoflo systems but the best way to do it and do it right is two-pipe reverse return. That way the first radiator on the supply is the last on return making the first on return the last one on the supply. This equals even flow at each radiator and allowing you to manually or thermostatically control each individual radiator with out affecting flow to others. In addition proper boiler piping such as primary/secondary may be required to eliminate condensing or shock depending on boiler model and design. Unless of course you invest in a good modulating condensing boiler which, loves cool water and saves money while offering even more comfort due to varying water temps based on outdoor temps.

Mea Culpa - I thought that a guy called a plumbing & heating contractor would know how to install rads.

I picked the middle bid, although they were all pretty close. The guy just seemed to know what he was doing - he talked a good talk.

My husband was home while the rads were being installed - he knows as much as I do about plumbing. I think he just ignored the whole thing.

I hope that you can take their breeding privileges away from them!!!

I even have them here, but they show nothing about how to deal with the hoses.

Thnaks for your input - at least I know that this isn't right.

Guess it's time to bite the bullet and start looking for rad covers...

Frankly, I'm simply boggled that someone would come in and do this sort of hideous installation. There's simply no excuse for this sort of sloppy, ugly work.

Have you paid the contractor? If not, I'd howl like crazy and make them come back. There's simply no reason that anyone should be expected to put up with this sort of awful looking installation. If you've given them the final payment....I'd still howl. If they won't make it right, I'd certainly put a negative posting on every available on-line rating system in your area, and complain to the BBB.

At the very least, your contractor could have used flat panel radiators with the inlet and outlet connections on the same end of the radiator. There are many available, and that would have at least spared you from so much ugly tubing trailing from one end to the other.

I encourage you to complain to your contractor (loudly!). If you can't get satisfaction, then do what you can to spread the word about the awful workmanship from this unconscionable outfit. It's truly outrageous.
