Adding pull out shelves to older base cabinets

Hi there,

We remodeled our kitchen about 10 years ago and we still love it. But we are adding some more cabinets to an empty wall and love the new pull out tray options that seem to be the standard now.

However, now that I've seen how wonderful they are, I'd love to add that feature to 2 of our older base cabinets that never seem to be used because of the deep, dark space at the back.

I contacted the company that did our kitchen, but they quoted us 150+ for each cabinet. yikes.

Has anyone ordered these roll-out from online sites or any other source? It seems simple enough, but hoped that someone had some suggestions or experience with this.

search under 'pull out drawers' or something similar. depending on width you can get them for 30-50.00 (or more) plus the glides.

there might be more threads on here about them also.

have you ordered the new cabinets yet? why not put in drawer stacks on the empty wall?

My DH figured out a way to make the inexpensive IKEA ones fit in our Diamond cabinets. It was a lot less expensive than going through Diamond, but because they were not meant for these cabs, he had to creatively retrofit them.

I have to ask what to me is the obvious, elephant in the living room question: If you're going to pay for someone to put in roll-outs, why not go all the way and just put in drawers? All the value of drawers has been discussed a gudzillion times, so I won't beat a dead horse. I've retrofitted several cabinets with drawers and it is just plain easy. Removing the center stile is eeeeeeasy. You probably need a square tipped drill bit, given the age of your hinges. Tapping it out then is a no brainer. A little sanding on the top area and in go the drawers. and Hollysprings has a point. Those are partial/standard overlay and you will have a nice big gap between the doors. If you have to buy new doors, why not buy new drawer fronts? If you don't want to buy new doors, you're going to end up with skinny, useless roll-outs that probably won't hold your nice big pots.

I'm not sure if you have anything in your dead corner. Mine was to small for lazy Suzan. I bought two mesh shelves and put them side by side, on bottom of one I put a spinner, and attached it to bottom of cabinet. On top I put mesh basket, did not attach and made sure I could turn it. In basket is my good processor, George Forman etc. on spinner is electric knife, chopper emerser,DH's grater too. On the other shelf I have a basket on top which is where I keep warranties and manuals,bottom shelf is empty,because to hard to reach. With the addition of pullout drawers in all lower cabinets I also made dummy drawer under sink a pullout for sponges,and made real drawer under cook top. For same kitchen cabinets I have a lot more room and am able to organize better. Enjoy your new kitchen.

You can create this look by installing a 15" 3 drawer base on the bottom and then a 15" deep upper cabinet that is tall (depends on the height of your cabinetry) that sits right on top. We are planning something like this (see computer rendering). Someone on Houzz in an old thread suggested you can add a nice detail by installing in a thick horizontal board over the lowers with a nice edge detail and the uppers sit on top. It is a timeless look, IMO

Thank you both for posting these options. They look like they could be mounted on the floor. I don't see there being enough room to put an actual cabinet in, next to his w/d set. If these options mounted to the floor they might work. I had recommended the side mounted Hafele, then you select the width of trays you insert from approx 4.5" to 11.5". Hi there to you too Mama Goose. I just saw some pics of your lovely kitchen on a thread looking at your green color. A wonderful kitchen! Hope all is well.

Sounds about right.

The typical cost for a drawer or pullout coming out of a factory cabinet shop is $100 +. 50 bucks for the ordering, inefficient production, delivering, installing, and a bit of profit doesn't seem out of line to me.

I added birch retrofit shelves and bins to several of my cabinets. Very well made, quite easy to install and work well.

I picked up a couple at Rockler.com for about 75.00 ea. Haven't installed them yet but they look pretty straightforward.

We got our pull out shelves at Bed Bath and Beyond - for the same reason you want them: old cabinets, unused space at the back.

They come in all sizes, they're super easy to install (we're no DIYers) and they're a lot less expensive than what you've been quoted. We got the largest, and I think they were about $75.00 each.

Very happy with them!

I would go with the Rockler site if you can install them yourself. Rockler has always been good quality for us and are alot cheaper!

I'm adding pull outs in several cabinets. I looked both at Rockler, and Overstock.com, but went with GC making them, because I have several odd shaped cabinets, and didn't want to loose any space, for 3 pullouts it's costing me 300, which I think is high, but this way I won't be loosing inches on each side.

I was going to pay the fortune, eventually, for pull-outs.

I have since done the following:
Found a bunch of pull-outs w/ glides at the reuse center for $2.00 each. (I can't use them, but I couldn't pass them up. Anyone local want 'em? We can talk.)
And, I've taken drawer boxes (reuse center) and put glides I got there (another $2.00 each) on them.

The tricky part was finding the drawers that with the glides, would fit in the cabinet doors.

In the meanwhile, I've found drawer bases ($10.00 each) and have trashed (redonated) the stupid lower reach-in base cabs.

But I felt pretty clever. The drawer boxes actually made better pull-outs, since they were deeper!
