Water heater leak....

Our 50 gallon water heater is 6.5 years old. Last week, we went down to the basement to get XMAS stuff out and noticed our water heater was leaking a lot of water through the overflow copper pipe on the side. When we shut the hot water off it stopped. I read online that it could be either the temp is too high or the pressure is too high. We did turn down the temp, it was set to max hot, and that has made it go from a lot of leaking to just a little, but still leaks. What is the next step here? Is leaving the heater on safe to do when its leaking?
