New Pool owner with question

Hi All. I live in upstate NY and put an in-ground pool in last fall so this is the first winter we have gone thru with it. We still have the cover on but it seems like the water level has dropped since we covered it in the fall. Is that normal? Does evaporation occur in the winter with a cover on it? What makes me nervous is we already had to have the liner replaced right after the pool was put it because there was a tear in it. Of course they did it for free since it was a brand new pool. I'm just curious as to why the water seems lower than it should. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

It's likely the snow load pushed it out.

Maybe I was generous. At 10 FPS, inch and a half pipe will do between 60 and 65 GPM. Todays recommended maximum FPS is 10 on the return and 8 on the suction. These numbers are based on safety and friction loss.You can push higher volumes of water through but your friction loss will increase very quickly. A 1.5 HP Super Pump will exceed these velocities. If I was generous, the reduced flow numbers would dictate an even longer run time for his pump, increase his power consumption, shorten his motor life, etc... only adds to the benefit of having the high efficiency motor of an Intelliflo with it's ability to be dialed down to both reduce power consumption and reduce friction loss by running slower.

I had natural cleft slate in my master bath in my last home and I loved it. It was not slick when wet. I will be putting in slate in all my common areas in my current home before too long.

Not really the same. You plaster is going through a curing process under water with first week to month being the most critical and continuing for months to a year. The brushing is not to clean up the mess left behind by the crew (that pool should have been clean when the plaster went in). It is to help remove deposits that come to the surface in the curing process and help it cure properly. You have to do it daily at first and then weekly. I just had my pool replastered and have been testing, adjusting and brushing daily. What is included with the first 30 days service should have been specified, but I don't know of anyone who hasn't done the daily brushing themselves. If you really don't want to do it, I'm sure you could specify that, pay the additional and arrange to have someone do it for you.

It may cost you a few bucks - but having been there, done that... You might just consider draining, pressure washing the empty pool, and putting new water back in. When you add up all the chemicals you use to bleach it back to health, it probably comes out about even and saves a LOT of headache.

Depends on the cover type. If you have a solid cover, yes, very easily. If you have a waterbag tarp cover, it may have a hole and you may have pumped the water out. If you have a mesh cover, something may have happened. If the pool is defrosted, remove the cover and look. If it looks normal, fill it back up.

It has a waterbag tarp on it. What do you mean by "we may have pumped the water out".? There is water that has gathered from the melted snow pushing the center of the tarp down but it is still being held by the water bags on the concrete surrounding the pool.

The snow load may have pushed it out between the cover and deck.

If there is a hole in the tarp, pool water can get on top. If you have a cover pump to remove rain water, there goes some pool water too.

I hate waterbag covers.

I know what you mean. We are hoping that this is the only winter we have to go thru with the waterbag cover but since this is a brand new pool, we still have landscaping that has to be done and paid for so the better cover may have to wait till we can save some more money. If there is a hole in the tarp, how the heck do we get it off without dumping all the leaves and nasty water back into the pool? Can you tell I'm a rookie at this yet?!!

Probably about a couple of feet in the middle. We had snow melt and then 2 days of rain that did'nt help! We have a pump we put in but every time we turn it on it floods the neighbors yard in no time! It's like there is no good place to run the water out

Can't bring it out to the street? A second pump is sometimes needed for long runs. Put the 1st pump's discharge in a big bucket as a sump and the second pump in the bucket and run the hose to the street. Or put the cover pump in permeable foam as a filter and discharge into the pool.
