How does your OTR microwave plug into the cabinets above?

We are installing a GE Advantium OTR under cabinets in our kitchen. We are not using it above the range or to vent outside. DH is getting ready to put up the cabinet/ Advantium and we are trying to figure out what you do with the electric box/ long cord in the cabinet above. Does anyone have pictures of how their cord goes in the cabinet? I only have 3 uppers and was hoping to use this cabinet for wine glasses.

I have as Fisher Paykel double oven in cabinets to one side and the fridge on the other. I really wanted an Advantium. We had the monogram built in and loved it at our last house. The only way I could get the Advantium to work in this design was to do an OTR version.

I just took a picture of the space to show you what it looks like. This is a budget remodel with Ikea cabinets. Please excuse the mess. The upper cabinet frame is sitting on top of the drawer cabinet.

We have checked and the door will be able to swing open. We know it is a tight fit and DH has to put some extra trim to get it to swing. He is working on figuring out the best way for that too.

Microwave power cord comes up through a hole towards the rear corner.

my experience with an OTR microwave is this: I removed my OTR M/W during a kitchen renovation but planned to keep it since it was fairly new, an Advantium 120 and I loved it but was not installing it again as an OTR, just going to use on a cart as a freestanding microwave I am assuming that all otr m/w's are the same as mine: the top is unfinished b/c in a normal application you did not see the top, it is installed to the bottom of the cabs above So that could be an aesthetic problem if 4" is exposed Do you know a good finish carpenter that could custom make your shelf to extend over this section and then jut back to the depth you had planned? You may not necessarily see the top from below but if you have a stairway near by,etc. it may be visible. Also the cord on mine comes out of the top so you would have a gap btwn the top of the m/w and the bottom of the shelf to allow for the cord to run to the back of the wall outlet and where would the outlet be placed? just what my experience has been Another thought; box in the m/w with similar material to the shelves creating it's own shelf below the shelf

Dedicated means no other outlets on the circuit. The outlet behind the stove is likely on the kitchen counter circuits, and using these for lighting of a microwave that is not sitting on the counter is not allowed. You need to install a new 20 amp circuit that has a single duplex receptacle for the microwave. The outlet can be in a cabinet (or in the sell behind a cabinet) but the cord cannot be run in a concealed location (like between a cabinet and the wall). Putting the receptacle in the cabinet avoids having it be considered a wall-counter receptacle that requires GFCI protection.

Mine is attached to the underside of the top cabinet as well as the back wall. I would think that could still be done in your situation, though, if you "build out" the bottom of the cabinet by filling in that space with solid wood like 3/4" plywood securely fastened the the underside of the cabinet and then fasten the microhood to that. You would have to make sure the plywood would be well hidden with molding, and you don't say how much of a gap you are talking about. If it is very large, you might consider creating a second, framed, "false bottom" below the current cabinet. I can't picture how you could disguise that though, unless you had some really creative design and molding work. Can you relate your original idea in more detail? How big the space would be and how you envisioned it looking with the space between the micro hood and the cabinet? They you could get more detailed suggestions on how to accomplish the same thing in a structurally sound way. Pictures would help a lot. Sue

Teedup, Yup, I'm 5'6", but haven't had a chance to try it that high, so don't know how it's going to be. Poor DD is only 5' (not that she lives at home anymore), and NOT that she helps out much when she visits... :>) But, my DH who does the majority of the cooking- wanted to ensure clearance for big pots, etc. This is also our first gas stove, so we want to be safe. However, this MW is huge- it's a Panasonic- so I may indeed be able to heat up a large pan of lasagna- but actually we always do that in oven cuz it would be in a metal pan! :>) I have never had an OTR before- my old MW was a honking big ancient Maytag model that I had bought at an auction for $8 and used for 11 years! We've been using our new one as a counter type in our temporary kitchen for the past few months- but looks like it may get installed properly this weekend- whooee!!!

Thanks! Yes, that is what I was looking for. Yours looks more simple and clean then I was thinking it would look. Does the excess cord just hang out in the back of the cabinet?

That is the part I was curious about. We only need a foot of cord, but the cord is 3 feet. We were thinking you could put plug mold or something around the cord to hide it. Originally my husband was going to run it up and down until it ran out.

Hi -

I just checked out OTR Advantium. The plug looks like olivesmom's photo. The electrician tied the cord in a loose knot, maybe to eliminate some of the extra cord, but the cord really isn't that long. HTH

Ours plugs into an outlet in the cabinet above the microwave, and the excess cord is stuffed behind the microwave. Then we blocked the hole the plug came through with some foam.

It's better than having it plug in behind the microwave because we can unplug it to fix the microwave instead of having to remove microwave to unplug it (a detail that had escaped me until the fan timer broke.
