New vintage can sofa, needs some work - suggestions please!

Just found this great cane sofa, exactly what I was looking for to go in my sunroom! It needs a little work, but overall in good condition. Definitely a new cushion and likely a new paint job. What would you do?

PS. If anyone has worked with a cushion replacement company that they can recommend it would be appreciated.

Great find! It doesn't look like it needs painting, but I like the darker color vs. white. Is the caning in good shape? There are people who restore caning.

There are so many great indoor/outdoor fabrics. I would contact an antique store (the local one I use does upholstery and did a fabulous job on the wing chair) or else try to get some referrals in your area.

A good upholsterer could make you a new cushion or cover that one.

Wonderful find! Hard to make recommendations without seeing the room where you plan to put it.

What a great kitchen! The main piece of advice I would offer is this: get rid of excess plastic containers. I had zillions of rubbermaid containers that didn't nest at all. I thought I needed every shape and size out there, so I bought far more than I could ever use. After we renovated our kitchen, I gave myself one drawer for plastic stuff. That's it. Now, it's a big drawer, but I have a family of nine people, so we still need quite a bit. First, I tossed or gave away that which would not nest. I standardized on 8" squares that fit into one another. I bought 6 of these and I've never needed more. All the lids are the same size. I have deep rectangular rubbermaid containers for holding flour and sugar in my baking cabinet. I have round containers for lunch boxes: my husband takes leftovers for lunch every day and reheats them in these lightweight containers that are as sturdy as regular rubbermaid. In this drawer I also store two rubbermaid butter dishes, three nesting funnels, 2 two-quart plastic pitchers, 2 small mixing bowls and 2 large mixing bowls, plus about 12 measuing cups from 4-cup to 1/4-cup in size. The key for my kitchen is that any plastic container we have is in this drawer. So I've gone from cupboards and drawers of plastic containers and measuring supplies to one single drawer. I will add that I have a plastic pasta scoop and larger colander that I store under the prep sink. I never save even the nicest of plastic containers that food might come in. If we ever need more, I can use a storage container from another part of the house, wash it out, then put it back when I'm done (like when I need to bring 60 cupcakes to school). I've also done the same sort of thing for lunch boxe supplies and ingredients. I have a baking center, which is to the right of the oven. My baking center is really just an upper cabinet with wire storage things inside that make it easy to cram a lot of stuff in a 30" wide cabinet. I do store extra baking mixes and flour/sugar in my lazy susan cabinet. I don't have a pantry. All of our health food is in another cabinet, near the blender where we make our protein shakes. I bought white plastic wirer coated shelves at the container store to stack dishes and baking goods in those cupboards. And also these tall, narrow two shelf units that fit under my sinks which sit next to the plumbing. They aren't really deep but just hold the basics in view (stuff tends to migrate to the back of the sink cabinet). I also got rid of excess pots and pans. I figured that if my pots and pans couldn't fit into one base cabinet, that I would have a hard time keeping tabs on those as well. My baking pans and cutting boards store vertically in a cabinet designed to hold tall thin items. You have so much wonderful space. If you can be judicious with how you plan your storage, you will find that you can even keep major seasonal items in your pantries as well, or gift wrap, etc. In fact, it looks like you could even put a desk in one of your pantries. This built in is a pain in my butt! I can’t seem to get it right! hemina- my books on the bottom are spread out a lot wider across the shelf if you scroll up and look at my picture. I can easily vary height on the second shelf by taken away some books so those are much shorter, swap out for smaller frames In a metal as suggested or could get smaller plants??? I’ve changed it a few 100 times this is what I currently have seems to cluttered to me?

Hello everyone. It has been 3 months since I last provided an update because I had to stop everything to care for my father who passed away about 6 weeks ago. I am back on track and the update is as follows. I learned that the color of the tub is actually Persian Brown like Stephanie has and I was only going in circles trying to figure that out because the Porc-a-fix people had the wrong color in their bottles of touch up paint that I had purchased to fix some damage. I took the advice of someone on another thread to go with black and white and here is where I am so far. After it is all tiled and the cabinet goes in, my next advice question will be what color to paint (or a wallpaper that won't fight with the greek key accent tile?) the walls above the wainscotting. I painted my vanity black and will get a quartz countertop that looks like black marble and the fixtures will be polished gold with black handles. below is across from the tub what will be closest with mirrored bypass doors and a floating dressing table

Wow, love that! If the foam is in decent shape, yes, it could just be recovered. If it needs to be replaced, I would definitely keep it as one large piece. I recently redid my family room sofa, and replaced the seat cushions with one large piece of foam. It's everyone's favorite sleeping spot now! I bought my foam here in Houston, from a place called the Foam Store -they have an internet site as well. I would meet with an upholsterer first and see what their thoughts are.

What a great find mea5! As for the cushion, whether or not the cushion itself needs to be replaces a good seamstress could do that for you. Hancock fabrics have business cards of local seamstresses in their stores if you don't know of one. I'd call a few and get estimates and ask to see samples of their work first. As a seamstress myself I'm always happy to share my work when a prospective client asks.
Hancock Fabrics also sells upholstery grade foam, but if you want memory foam you can purchase mattress pads to be cut to size and layered for the proper height for a super comfy cushion.

Uptight..too funny! That's probably true, but I've never had a virus so I usually heed its warnings.

That is one gorgeous sofa. It's going to look fantastic in your sunroom. I especially love the legs.

I agree with the others. A good upholsterer can make cushions for you. Mine had to redo one of our sunroom wicker sofa cushions when a few years ago our puppy decided to disembowl it and scatter it throughout the room after she was confined there for a couple of hours.

The cushion it came with could probably be reused, but I just want something comfier. I want this to be a cozy place to read and hangout.

The cane has one small tear, and there is one spot that the frame needs some wood glue and a nail or two.

Thanks bestyears for the recommendation on one piece of foam, that was one of my questions!

Distress it? Are you sure? I like the dark finish on it as is, well I mean refinished the same.
