Remedy for 'Drippy' Dog?

Warning. Yucky topic.

Eliot, our 13-year-old Westie rescue is leaving 'spots' *everywhere* he lies down. I wash him underneath, along with his paws, after he has been outdoors, but it's not enough. He's not peeing, this is just sort of little greenish 'residue'. Perhaps an infection? This just began in the few weeks. I'll be calling our vet tomorrow, but all advice is welcome.

that is usually caused by an infection the vet should be able to help you with it.

Could it be his anal glands? My boys, Sam more so than Harry, have an occasional problem with impacted anal glands. The glande sometimes "leak" a thick, greenish stuff and I know to take them in. This is from their bum region, not the liquid plumbing area.

It's terribly uncomfortable for them and very smelly - as in gagable. I have to take them in for the vet tech to "express" them.

It's worse in the winter when they can't run as much as they normally do. Good exercise will help with them express the glands normally with they have to "go." Most dogs never have a problem with this gland that is no longer used, since they are no longer primal wolves, but a few do suffer from it.

If your dog seems to be licking himself a lot, or "scooting" his (or her) behind on the carpet, this is a sure sign of impacted anal glands. The vet can clear it up. Mine is "teaching" me to do it myself, but I'm hesitant. If you don't do it just right the glands can rupture and then need surgery.

I am not a vet & this is not intended to be veterinary advice, or advice at all. If that were my dog, I'd get some penicillin from the feed store & give it to him orally or subcutaneously (I can get syringes at the feed store as well). I would say that it is for my horse. The last time I got penicillin, it was about $13.00. I'd ask the person at the feed store, or call a friendly vet tech, to find out the dosage for a dog of my dog's weight. I'd also clean the ears & pull out any hair that's matted up inside there; ears can be cleaned with any "pure" oil (no fragrance) such as olive oil or mineral oil.

If your dog eats something that it shouldn't, like a screw or pill or piece of plastic, you can induce vomiting with a tablespoon (or two depending upon the size of the dog) of hydrogen peroxide. I would only do this if its fairly close to the time frame of when they ate it - not hours later. I would make sure you do it outside as the dog will make a mess indoors. I learned this years ago, when my dog ate the gel from the inside of a foot warmer. The ingredients didn't seem toxic, but my vet recommended we induce vomiting, just in case. And since then, I've used it a couple other times. Once when that same dog ate a couple screws while I was putting together a book shelf. Another time when my JRT chewed into my gym bag to eat my smelly clothes and she chewed up a pill bottle that was in the bag. The pill count seemed okay, from the date it was filled to the date she ate it, but I wasn't positive so we induced vomiting. She didn't vomit any pills, but she did puke up a few buttons and zipper head. (crazy dog!)

You can squirt it in their water or you can squirt it on their tongues, you can get it at most whole foods or health food markets, and you should give half a dropper full about an hour before hitting the road. Be sure your pup has plenty of water in the car and park your car in deep shade if the sun is out. Good luck

My golden retriever Camden had anal gland issues where I was taking her to get them purged at the vet every 3 weeks…. Before learning to do it myself. Ewww. Ha! I started her on “Perfect Form” by honest kitchen - it’s a supplement powder you mix into her food. No more issues with her butt ever since! Highly recommend. She is 9 now and we’ve been using this powder since she was around 2. She has “loose” glands so the perfect form made her have to work just a little harder and squeeze her stool out which lets her purge her glands naturally and on her own now! Praise be! My other golden retriever Cara is 12 and has been battling some type of undiagnosed skin dermatitis/autoimmune disorder of some kind. Her belly area gets scaly and turns into open lesions. Started as dry skin about three years ago and then she lost her belly hair. We finally saw a dermatologist and her first thought was food allergies. We’ve switched her food a few times, tried elimination diets, and now have her on a hydrolyzed protein diet by Royal Canin. No real improvement yet so hopefully we can see what the dermatologist says at the follow up. It still may be environmental allergies however it seems unlikely since we have never moved. It’s been almost 8 weeks on the HP food. 8 is the minimum amount of time to see results with food/diet Changes from what we have been told. We shall see! We’ve been spot washing her a few times a week with Maleseb (leaving on 5-10 min) and putting neo predef powder on the wounds when her skin flares up (when we forget to treat her for too long). Doing this clears up the issues in about a week or less….but only temporary…. When we stop then the scales come back and area gets inflamed and oozy and scabby again. Looking forward to trying the COAT DEFENSE canine powder listed above. Just ordered it so please send prayers please! Hope this helps some other pet owners out there!

Poor little feller!

It does sound like infection, vet will probably give him some anti-biotics.

You might run to the pet store tonight & get some of the pants or diapers they make for females in heat.

If no pet store around, try a regular diaper.

Thanks, all! Of course just posting this has already *cured* the problem! LOL

Seriously, this morning E-dog left not a single spot on the duvet cover when he hopped up to greet us. ("Wake UP, it's MORNING!")

Maybe my keeping him clean has finally paid off. I'll wait on calling the vet.

Caroline -- I appreciate the guess, but this isn't anal glands. Oh, yes, we've been THERE, too!

I thought that you were going to refer to the side-to-side rotational shaking that dogs do when wet, that spreads the liquid everywhere ..

... well - wherever ... as long as it gets it off of the femalecanine/dog! S/he says.

To the consternation of the canine, I expect ... unless you apply a good dose of rubbing, as well?
