Here I am .....with my bandaged up knee...I always had those...lol

I'm standing on my dad's old car.

Wish we had more pictures of that old car. If I remember right it was a crank start. Can you imagine having to do that on a cold winter morning....

Sara, that is probably not a disease unless it came fast and you missed it. Big box stores are notorious for putting any label on any plant, so it could be an ornamental grape, a muscadine grape (which needs a cross-pollinator), or who knows what. If your plant still has some leaves on it I would compare the leaf shape with a Fredonia leaf online - grape leaves are a good ID tool. Overall the odds are high that it is not a Fredonia. Scott

Oh, I should have added that when we purchased them, WOH was being sold by Austin's as a Shrub Rose. Now, they are only selling it as a Climber. This is a good move. The only images I have are the blooms from the first year and they are almost identical to Zuzu's beautiful image. Yes, this is exactly what the flowers are like. The other factor is that the stems are long and the heavy weight of the blooms does cause them to droop. I have just moved them all and have planted them against a south facing wall amongst Etoile de Hollande, Guinee and Claire Austin climbers where the stems should get more support. It IS a beautiful rose........I'm sure you'll love it.

Hi Bonitapplebum, I live in western Cleveland Ohio zone5 b and I have P.aureosulcata yellow groove bamboo. I dont have a barrier but I do prune the unwanted rhizome by digging around and finding the runner and pull up the runner like a zipper and replace in the direction I want it to go or cutting it and dumping the unwanted in the garbage. ( my neighbors dont get bamboo.) I dont have a problem that I know of. I started my small groove 3 years ago. I doesnt get too tall here yet and there is some die back but so far hasn't died. This year it was very cold and a lot of snow so I dont know yet if it has died. I know someone near me that has the same bamboo and they have a healthy sized groove with there culms are over 15 ft high and they come back after some whitening with winter die back. I'm going over there next week to ask how they prune. You can email later to ask what I have found out. I say go for it but prune back like Inversa said on (RE: OK, so root pruning is really hard and not that effective?).. An even easier way is to build a raised bed framed with timbers or stone, or just a mound of soil for the bed and you see most of the rhizomes peeking out the sides and you can snip them off, a few will get past but keep your eyes open. if a shoot comes up where you don't want bamboo then get rid of that section of rhizome. Only have personal info on Zone 6. My dad planted running bamboo in 1965 on a rock ledge. Exposed boulder on one side, a stone wall and more exposed ledge fifteen feet away on the other. Not more than 18 inches of topsoil. Took a few years for it to get going (it receives almost no sun with 60 foot trees around it and being on the north side of the house) but over the decades it has run down the ledge and 200 feet along the wall. It would go further but a stream stops it. Nice 40 and 50 foot tall culms which need heavy thinning every 4 or 5 years. Very handy stuff to have around for garden stakes, tomato cages etc. Not really a problem as all you do to stop it from growing in the lawn is mow right over the shoots as them emerge or cut them to eat. Become a prized possesion and one of the nicest things on a lot which is unsuitable for growing much of anything but moss and a few herbs. Unfortunately I have no idea what variety he planted. I know he got the most cold hardy he could find at the time Back then some people (including his own family) thought he was crazy to grow bamboo in New England. Wasn't much around or common knowledge that some varieties take temps down to zero or below.

No not a lot of memories from that time...My mom passed away, probably the next year after this picture. Then I entered a new life...it was a good one too.
I was my mother's only child. My dad had a couple from another marriage. But I moved in with my mothers sister and 4 cousins. I was luckier than most..My aunt loved all children...and she loved me.
When I got engaged, I came in the back door and went to show her my ring...She said"I know...I saw it as you walked in the door"...as she turned around...she had tears in her eyes...She's gone now too...but I never had a day that I didn't know, that she loved me.

My daughter works two houses down from the house I lived in where this picture was taken. I would love to go knock on the door and go in to see what it looks like inside now.

I can still picture all the lily of the valley my mom had growing in front by the porch.

Could have been a hanky...I still like them...I have over a hundred old hankies....

Or it could have been a frog...lol..(I no longer like to hold frogs..but I do like the little frogs who grow up in my little water feature outdoors.)

Patti, go knock on that door. I did that in CA at the house I grew up in. The lady who answered the door spoke very little English but she welcomed me in and gave me a tour.
