I can't believe anyone can have too much space in their garden - if so, i want to move to their place! My biggest problem this last year was the peppers. We had a really cool spring, and I planted them out too early and the darn things never forgave me for the insult. I also got a huge aphid infestation last year and I suspect it was because I did not have enough bean teepees up (again I screwed up on the timing of getting out the pole beans). Usually the lady bugs like to use them for their nurseries, so I am going to hafta make sure I put out lots of bean teepees this year. I planted a bunch of cosmos and that did pretty well as a trap crop, but I was an unhappy camper for about 3 weeks late spring last year. Glad to hear I am not the only one who can't seem to make enough compost (or get the timing right on stuff!). I am an avid lasagna gardener, but even layering leaves and grass clippings and straw year round doesn't keep up with the veggies needs (we have no soil here - just a couple inches of clay over caliche). I buy my compost from a local shop that is organic - top dress twice a year and side dress as things seem to need it. every time I hear someone talk about the importance of double digging I hafta laugh - when we need to dig a hole in our yard, we hafta rent a concrete chisel. Even a posthole digger won't touch the caliche. No way we can double dig here!

Yep, those are all common mistakes of newer growers. Most of us on this list have dealt with the same issues at some point. However, it seems growers need to actually makes these mistakes before they learn from them. But it is all part of the experience and hopefully, when we do experience these problems, they do not result in a complete loss off a growing season but maybe just a minor setback that we are able to recover from and still have a productive season. I am entering my third full season growing peppers and I know that I will wind up dealing with several new and different problems that I didn't experience in years past but I also know that some of the old problems will crop up too. And some of those will be self inflicted problems that I should have learned to avoid by now. Never-the-less, I am certainly looking forward to getting started with this coming season which is a month or so away for me still. I have a couple overwinter plants to keep me busy in the mean time. Any of the marble and even tumbled stone can vary and you just don't know until you open your box just what your run of tile will look like. Be prepared to order extra boxes to pick through. I also ripped out my first backsplash. Join the club, there are a few of us here. My tile was a simple white crackle tile. It was installed beautifully. But after it was grouted it had a slight grey cast that looked horrible with the granite. How could I have known this would happen? We ripped it out the next day. But then it took me months to find a replacement. It became an obsession. Finally a sale woman said "At some point you need to make peace with this." And she was right. But, I had to go through the process of getting mutiple opinions so I wouldn't make another error. Post your choices here. GW's will love to give you our opinion. Good luck. Your husband sound like mine. If he was agreeable to ripping it out, than he is in your corner.

Yikes, what a frustrating mess for you . . . I'm so sorry! Our mistakes? (1) dont' make plans to move a wall until you know for certain that everything inside that wall can be moved! We found two tall sets of pipes (heat minifolds) for our in-floor radiant heat in there and they couldn't be moved. Thank goodness we found that out before the cabs were ordered! (2) changing the entire kitchen footprint and removing the existing island will expose flooring (brick) that hasn't had sealant, floor oils and 15 years of living already ground into it. It's very hard to get those areas to blend with each other! (3) Work crews like to leave doors and windows open while they work and go in and out. That lets in cold or hot air, which causes your heating/cooling bills to go way up. It also lets in bugs, dirt, dust and mice :0 ! (4) Don't take it for granted that your GC and subs will order everything you'll need in a timely manner. Not having the right supplies when you need them = downtime for the crew = every other sub is set back, timewise = $$$ Stay on top of everything yourself. Keep a binder for all notes, order times, things you'll need, etc.

I try to, but I've been a slow learner on some things in the past. I've learned a lot from that though.

I wish I could say yes. But, honestly, I have repeated some.

I've repeated some too. I think that sometimes I think it's bad circumstances rather than a bad decision - but when I get the same result twice from the same action (or inaction), it finally filters in *LOL*

Sometimes.

Sometimes it seems to take quite a while for the lesson to sink in.

Fortunately ... God is patient!

Usually, I do. I'm a common sense, logical person, and tend to think things through thoughly. If I happen not to, I will learn the second time around. No thirds for me. I do have several family members who NEVER learn from their mistakes and keep screwing up over and over again.

I try to learn from other people's mistakes, especially my older siblings. For example: pregnant at 19, speeding tickets, bouncing checks, using drugs.

I've also learned from a few of my own mistakes. Now I won't buy a used car from a stranger, I don't eat giant hamburgers after 9:00 at night, and I don't lend money to my younger brother. :-)

I TRY to learn from my mistakes, and usually do learn, but often, especially when my heart wants to help someone I wind up a repeat offender. But I'm getting more hardened in my old age.
