My neighbor's dead horse is out on their front lawn.

How long can they keep it there before getting rid of it? They have it covered with a blue tarp. DH noticed that the legs are starting to stick out, stiff.

They gave it a shot, I think, yesterday morning. There was a vet truck there. It was out of the corral, that is to the side of the house, and tied to a tree out front. I didn't know there was anything wrong with it. I would go across the street, when I went to get my mail, and say hi to it. Elvira and him would touch noses, when I lifted her up. It was very gentle and friendly.

I know horses can live to be 30 years old and it might be around that age. They have had it for arond 20 years or so. The daughter wanted it in HS, then when she left it would just hang out at the front of the corral. It was very friendly and lots of neighbors that walked by would stop and pet it.

Just wondering what I can do about the dead horse out front for everyone to see, including the neighborhood kids. I find it rather depressing to see it there.

Why not ask the neighbors? They have probably already made a call to the rendering company to come pick it up.

If that doesn't work, call the county animal control.

I called and left a message but they haven't got back to me. They never were the most friendly of neighbors. They were loners and aloof from the rest of the neighborhood.

This happened to me. I initially would pick it up and fling in the woods. Then one day I stepped in it and dragged it in the house. Very next day, came home to a fresh one waiting for me at the bottom of the driveway. Son happened to be on the lawn playing ball and I asked him to pick it up. Next day, it was gone and the mom came over. She was more focused on the fact that I asked her son to pick it up than she was with the fact that her dog was leaving his doo all over my lawn. Looking back, her attitude was a tell-tale sign of what was still to come. Over the course of two years, as I would tell her she'd say all i had to do is let her know and she'll pick it up. Got to a point she wouldn't answer the door. I tried the cops who would talk to her..but it continued. Finally filed a complaint actually 3 (be prepared, they can plead not guilty which means you then have to go to court). I agreed to dismissing one. Cost her $250. I felt bad but too bad. So, now that she has been fined, did it stop? Nope. I filed another complaint within a year. I never heard anything more. I think someone buried the complaint but I finally made it through the remainder of this season without another incident.

Well, Irma-St. Pete, there has been quite a lot going on since I last posted. Others who have been following this might be interested also. If not, just pass it over. Instead of this being his fourth marriage, I found out it is his fifth! This is her third marriage. Anyway, he has moved out and she is still living there, but we have resumed our friendship mainly because I offered her an olive branch, so to speak. The plan commission checked out the height of the fence and sent a letter to them stating they would have to apply for a varience to keep the fence there. This requires them to notify, by registered letter, all neighbors who are within 100 feet of their property. The wife told me that her soon to be ex gave the letter to her and told her to deal with it. She called the commission and chose not to apply for the varience. Instead, she called me and said she would like to take the fence down and asked, politely, if my husband could help her. I couldn't get him out of the house fast enough to go help her with this. She plans to move when the house sells and said she can use the fence in her new place. All that is left are four by four posts that are concreted in the ground. My hubby told her when Spring came around, he would take those out for her also. She has been very appreciative. NOW, here's a real kicker, he reported to the area plan commission, once he moved out, that MY fence, (the one he told us to put up so they wouldn't have to put one up between our properties, remember?) is over the allotted 3 foot. Of course, I know this is just for spite and his last hoorah. The wife didn't know he reported it. When I told her she was flabergasted and so apologetic. As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, my other neighbor that shares the property line has no problem whatsoever with it and we drew up, on paper, an agreement letter. I have applied for the variance, which cost $75.00, sent registered letters to neighbors to inform them of this, which cost $10.00, plus another $1.85 for stamps. All my ducks are in a row and I meet with the commissioners on April 11th to find out their decision for my varience. I was told by one of the courthouse employees that it more than likely will be allowed since the neighbor whose property abuts to mine is ok with it and he's the only one it really would make a difference to. Almost forgot, my hubby and I wrote out an offer to the wife of the jerk to buy 12 feet of property from them. This would take care of anyone in the future from doing the same thing once their house is sold and new owners move in. The drawback to this, is since their divorce is not final, the jerk would have to agree to it also. She hasn't replyed yet or said when they will decide if they will sell it to us. It's a substantial amount of money, but it all would be well worth it. That, in a nutshell, is the update on this crap.

I have lazy neighbors who have been allowing their two dogs to run freely and poop in my yard. It used to be an empty lot so I kind of get it but sorry, someone lives here now. After 3 years of going out to yell at the dogs or to actually chase them off (when I see them) and shovelling poop back to their yard the damn dogs still come over. I thought when dogs smell the poop they learn thats's where to poop? I must have sent 40 to 50 piles back to their side. The best part was just the other day either someone also returned them a present, in their driveway, or ome of their dogs actually pooped in the middle of their driveway. Karma is a b!tch. Anyway, dog deterrents DO NOT WORK so do not suggest them. Pellets were a waste of $$, ultrasonic repeller did nothing. I'm not wasting any more effort or $$ on solutions that don't work. And I'm not calling animal control. Range wars only make living in your neighborhood stressful. I want to come home to a castle, not to a war. We get along otherwise so why make things stressful? I'm not talking to them, either. They are already aware of the problem and really, I shouldn't have to ask you to clean up after your dog. Why are we all so entiltled to our rights over everyone elses's anymore? There is absolutely no respect left in this world which I think is really the crux of the matter. You can't ask anyone to do anything that they think infringes their rights. Uh sorry, but we didn't fight two world wars and countless others so it would be acceptable for you to be lazy and let your dogs poop all over. I'm done playing the game. I'm fencing the entire side yard on that side now, probably close to 200 feet. Enough is enough. No one else on the street of large yards has a fence out front so that part of it will stand out. But it's the only thing that will work. I know it's not an option for everyone but it is for me and I have no issues with the look of a beautiful 3 rail white vinyl fence with wire mesh running down the side. And landscaping the inside of the fence line will be fun! I will do the right thing and let them know I am doing it(no setback here so it's only fair to warn them). And when they ask why......problem solved. I'm sure the dogs will start going on the other side now; it will be interesting to see how that neighbor, who has 3 small children, swallows that pill.

My neighbors don't do diddily squat to their yard. Luckily, their paved driveway separates my yard from theirs. However, there is about 5-7 feet on "my side" of their driveway that they actually own. After getting sick of seeing 4 foot tall broadleaf weeds and grassy weeds in that spot, I took my weed eater to it. Since then, I've mower it a few times when my mowing my lawn. I may have "accidentally" over sprayed some weed killer and broadcast some pre-emergent (when I was treating my own lawn, of course). One day, I come home to find them outside, husband and wife, going to town on the at area with garden hoes and shovels. Ripping out thick weeds, tilling the soil, trimming their pathetic shrubs... ... And then, I noticed yesterday there is some grass seed there. I couldn't believe it. I think they started to get the picture; I was taking care of their stuff and they probably felt guilty. I don't have the heart to tell them that you don't plant grass in Central VA at this time of the year, and that they probably just overturned about a gazillion I'm sure they completely destroyed the pre-me barrier that I "accidentally" applied; however, it's almost time for another soon anyway. Meanwhile, my KBG is creeping on over there. I'm sure they will think it's the grass seed they planted, and I'm fine with that.

I think there would be very strict laws regarding an animal that size laying around. Animal control would be the one to call or go see if you have to.

If you think it's a real health hazard, I'd call someone... but if you just don't like to look at it or find it depressing, and it's only been a day or so, I'd just stay out of it. Their horse is dead (for whatever reason), let them mourn - have a little compassion and don't cause any unneeded problems for them. I would bet they have it under control.

It's been dead for one day? I wouldn't worry about it, they're probably trying to find someone to come get it. Horses are huge and it's not easy to get rid of a body that big.

I am sorry you have to look at this. I would be a tad bit upset too. I don't know that you can do anything about it. But it wouldn't hurt to make a phone call.

I did make a phone call and politely asked when the body was going to be picked up. I also offered my sympathy.

I was thinking the same as Kathleen. A rendering company might not be available right away or someone to dig a whole big enough for it is available later. If your worried keep trying to call them first, I'm guessing they will take care of it.
On rare occasions we will have a dead cow or calf over by our cow lots waiting for the rendering truck. No tarp needed, I just feel a little sad and don't take time to look over there unless I need to. It helps that they are not pets though. I'm guessing your connection to this horse makes it more uncomfortable to see..

We had a horse growing up. She died in the back yard. We had a hard time finding someone to help us dispose of her body. We ended up calling in a backhoe and burying her on an adjacent property (with permission of the property owner.)

Oh, I am so sorry the horse died - they are such beautiful animals. I hope you get this resolved soon - I would be terribly upset to have to look at it, too.

Horses are quite expensive to dispose of. I have heard of it costing up to $300 for them to pick up a horse.

It might take a day or so for a rendering truck to get to them also. Hopefully it isn't too warm where you are - pop!

They will have to do something with it soon though. It is a health hazard.

It's hard to get rid of a dead horse. It took me 3 days to find someone to come over with a front end loader to get it. Mine colicked and died and I was going all over town trying to get someone to help me. We had to rip out fences to get to mine. Luckily it was hidden from the neighbors or they would have raised the roof about it.

I just got back from errands and it is gone. I guess I was sad because every time I saw it laying there I thought about what a nice horse it had been and I had know it for around 20 years. When my son was little, we would go over and give it carrots from the garden. I don't want to be silly and start crying. It wasn't even my horse!

I'm sorry the poor thing died.I love animals. My neighbor down the street had a duck that used to waddle down by my house. I fed it birdseed and dried corn. I heard it had died and felt so bad. It flew up on someone's roof near the chimney and suffocated from the carbon dioxide in the chimney fumes.

Stand him/her up on her/his feet.

Install a saddle ... and collect a Big Hat, chaps, lasso ... the whole schmeer!

Put out a big sign on a nearby highway, "Have your picture taken while riding a quiet horse: guaranteed not to buck, throw you or provide any other untoward experience!! Reasonable rates: Special! Today only! 3 hours' ride for the regular price of one!"

"Bonus: Regular rental rate on accessories waived for today!"

We are animals lovers too.Ashley has always loved and wanted a horse.So sorry about your neighbor's horse.To me it would be very sad,and upsetting to just know it was dead and being able to look over and see it.I too wander how it died.To me this is a sad story.The story about you picking up Elvira[is that your daughter,or pet]whoever touching nose is so sweet.I am glad you posted because talking about things when it bothers you helps.What was the horses name?Ashley my daughter used to have a play horse I think they are called "Rocking horses" well Ashley named her King.Ashley was about 4 years old.We were watching a Home movie we made of her.She is soon to be 21 and I loved seeing the movie and her loving her play horse and she was wearing a hat.She would walk up to King and layed her head on him just like she was a live horse.LOL.

catlady15 - I think his name was Butternut, like the squash, because that was his color. He was a medium palomino color with a light color mane. He was a beautiful horse. I always wanted a horse but never the expense and care, so visiting him was like having one without that. Elvira is my mini Dachshund. I wish I would have got a picture of them touching noses. It was so cute.

Clare, it must be very sad to lose that friendly horse. We walk past a neighbor's horse several times a week, and always bring carrots and apples for him. I know it would be hard for us to lose Popeye.

I'm glad that your neighbors were responsible and took care of him in all ways, both the vet visit to put him down and then having him picked up. That was a humane way to deal with him.

Again, I understand your loss.
