Kinetico 2040SOD install question

We just have the 2040SOD Softener installed last night.

This morning when I went down to the basement to double check for leaks, I have noticed that there are arrows on the head unit for the two big intake and outlet ports.

But the interesting thing is ..... the hard water (outside pipe) is now connected to the port which has an arrow pointing outward from the center of the head unit. the pipe leading to the rest of the house is connected to the port which has an arrow pointing towards the center of the head unit.

So the water flow is the opposite of what the arrow are pointing.

I would think that the port with the arrow point towards the center of the head unit should be the inlet port ?

Could the installer did it the wrong way?

Is it something that I should worry about?

Water seems to be running fine inside the house, but the installer didn't test the water after the installation, so I am not sure if the softener is doing anything.

I have took some pictures but I am not sure how to post them here.

Can anyone with 2040 check to see what port is the water source connected to? Does anyone have an installation manual that can share?

I'd have been on the phone to the selling dealer before sitting down to post your question.

The inny and outy arrows are generally indicators of the intended flow path of the service water.

Stop reading this and call your dealer.

I did call the dealer before researching on the internet and is waiting for the installer to call me back since this morning.

Since you're on city water the water utility should provide you with a copy of a water conditions report. That will tell you the conditions of the water as treated at the point the city sends it into the distribution system. That report will not tell you the exact conditions of the water at your water meter which is what the softener will be treating. Understanding that you want to do this yourself and on the cheap here's what I would do... The model 100 is has a higher hardness treating capacity than the model 60 so all things being equal it would regenerate less frequently which may not be desirable. The orange color in the top window of your free Kinetico would seem to indicate that is has been treating water with iron. The resin could be fouled or tired. It would help to know the water conditions where the softener was previously installed. If it were me, I'd relay the water conditions report to the the Kinetico dealer along with the specifics of your water use and plumbing requirements and ask them if a properly functioning model 100 would be a good fit for your water treatment needs. If they say yes, then I'd get them to disassemble and service the control valve and put in the correct disk for your needs and set the brine tank for the proper salt dose. I'd have them check the resin and sanitize the softener. If everything is done right you'll enjoy a decade or so of trouble free soft water.

Hi Grey Parrot, great idea, we will definitely pull this out and take it with us when we move, as in NYC, the cost for the K5 with all pre and post filters, installed, was $2260! There is apparently only 1 distributor for NYC - Westfair Water. I dealt with Frank (the son, not Frank the father) and he was very nice. Actually, the price would have been $2460, but they took off $200 when I waffled on it due to price. I called a distributor in another part of the country and it was about $500 less, but we are used to paying a LOT more for everything here, as taxes and real estate are super high. One of the other tradespeople who did work on our renovation said that they automatically add $200 to jobs in Manhattan (he was located in the Bronx) just to cover a parking ticket (?? about $125 I think he said), tolls, extra time, and aggravation. I appreciated his honesty. I will say, I am happy with with the K5 - there is a big difference in the taste of the water. Also, we are no longer buying bottled water, so I guess there is a slight offset in price there (although we did not spend very much on bottled water - just to go to the gym and stuff, but now we can fill a stainless steel water bottle at home.) If we did not live in an apartment building, I would want a whole house filter - as it is, we just have it at the kitchen sink. Hope this info will be useful to others - I have appreciated the wealth of information on this website!

FIRST: one bag to start will be enough and add 3 gallons of water to the dry brine tank. After a regeneration add salt to cover water and check it at least once a week. I like the Diamond Crystal Bright & Soft (yellow bags) @ Home Depot. SECOND: 7.5 feet up is not problem but is has to be air gapped. THIRD: drain line is 1/2" ID and the brine line should be 3/8" OD. Both are PE (polyethylene) milky white semi rigid tubing. FOURTH: If your K60 is a packed bed using fine mesh resin then you need a pre-filter. If it is uses standard hi-capacity resin with freeboard design then you don't. Make sure you get service and return CORRECT. Did your K60 come with a Kinetico bypass valve? If it did note that some designs can be REVERSED. If it didn't, and even if it did, plumb in a three ball valve bypass in case you need to service the softener. You may need to change the # disk and salt (float) setting for correct setup for your water conditions and water usage.

With respect to your dealer... the question of correct hookup should be on the tip of the dealer's brain.

If I were you, I'd put the softener in bypass until you get an answer.

The installer did install a bypass valve at the softener, didn't he?

Thank you for the suggestion, I have put the softener in bypass for now.
I am not able to find any installation manual/instruction for the Kinetico unit on the internet. I don't quite understand why they keep it as such a secret.

I just received a call back from the installer. He said that he has configure it that way and assure me that everything is fine.

I would still like a copy of the installation manual if anyone has it.

Is this a new 2040SOD softener you just bought through the Kinetico dealer and had installed?

There is a dramatic difference in water path between the in and out ports. One path is through the distributor tube down to the bottom of the resin tank out and up through the resin. The other port will path the water in to the top of the resin and down through it then into the distributor tube then up the tube and out.

The most experienced installer on the planet does not get to hook up a device wrong because he has configured(?) it and say it's right.

Call the Kinetico dealer back and tell him/her that the installer's explanation is not acceptable and you want to see the hookup diagrams. Call Kinetico corporate and ask them.

Is there a bypass valve installed at the softener?

OK. A couple of things. The MACH 4040s OD is an upflow. This means the raw water goes down the riser tube and UP through the media bed.

Secondly, if the by-pass is a Kinetico by-pass, Then what appears as it being backwards would be in fact proeprly done. The by-pass is designed to be reversible to accommodate plumbing direction to/from the unit of the plumbing.

The handle is removed and inverted, thus reversing the flow. Both the current and past by-passes were able to do this. It makes installations very easy and neat in appearance.

Your concerns are common but don't fret.

You actually respond faster then the Kinetico installer, even thought I call on them first. Apparently, he was busy installing another system this morning. Business must be good, I guess.
