I Was Up All Night w/ My Dog
Comments (28)citrusnut, My friend (who is also president of our local animal welfare group) had a collie who died from eating pork chops. She only ate a few & you would think it wouldn't matter to a dog that size. I think she said there is an enzyme they can't digest, I will check with her & find out. Karyn, Tell her to get her dog to obedience classes & quick. What would happen if the dog drug her in front of a car? You really need to be able to control your dog to keep both of you safe & a well trained dog is a much better family member. 15 to 20 minutes of training twice a day for 6 to 8 weeks is all it takes. After all the excitement last week, Abbi took a whole head of cabbage off the kitchen table & started to eat it! I have spent her entire life hiding food from her. In the past she has eaten several loaves of bread (plastic & all) & she knows how to get a full pan of food off the top of the stove without spilling much. She clamps her mouth over the edge & lifts it off, I wish I had a video of it, it's amazing. She has also figured out how to open both the oven & fridge doors but she doesn't do it very often. In her younger days, she could clear a 4 foot chain link fence (Newfs are not supposed to be able to do that). She is 9 now & slowing down & she hasn't jumped the fence for a couple years (I have an American Eskimo to do that for me now). Linda...See Moreserious cat vomiting (bile)
Comments (8)The bloodwork and x-rays were within the last couple of days? The vomiting cat could have: Overeating/gluttony Swallowed abrasive material Toxins Food sensitivity Gastritis Dietary indiscretion Food sensitivity Foreign body Enteritis/colitis Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis Rounds, hooks, whips GI ulcer Gastric dilation and volvulus (bloat) Intussusception Constipation Pancreatitis Hepatobiliary Acute hepatopathy Cholangitis Biliary obstruction Acute renal failure Nephroliths Prostatitis Pyometra Peritonitis Septicemia Addisons Htyperthyroidism Vestibular disease Drug reaction Obvious that is a very long list of possible problems, and the physical exam and history is extremely important. For a young cat, foreign bodies are very common, so my first order of business after looking at the bloodwork and x-rays myself (if they were recent) would be to sedate the cat and look in her mouth. Lots of times they have string foreign bodies and sometimes you can see the string wrapped around their tongue. Severe dental problems such as abscesses can also cause vomiting and decreased appetite. I'd deworm the cat regardless of previous history and of fecal test results just in case parasites are the problem- it's harmless to deworm if that isn't the problem and sometimes you get lucky. If you want THE test to find out what is wrong, then abdominal exploratory surgery is the answer. In a cat of that age, foreign bodies are extremely common, and while you're inside the abdomen trying to figure out what is wrong, you find it and fix it. If there isn't a foreign body, you can look at the pancreas and rule out pancreatitis, get biopsies of each section of GI tract and possibly diagnose IBD or other inflammatory GI problems or GI cancer. Losing weight and not eating will lead to hepatic lipidosis which is a potentially fatal condition of anorexic cats. It is caused when their body sends all of their fat to the liver to make glycogen so the body can make ATP the source of energy for all life's processes. Unfortunately if the negative energy state continues, the liver becomes overwhelmed with fat and function decreases, causing even more nausea and vomiting, and if not stopped, leading to death. So it is extremely important to either get the cat eating on her own or to have a feeding tube placed so she can get adequate nutrition and prevent or stop hepatic lipidosis. I hope your kitty gets well soon. Please keep us all updated- we're pulling for her!...See Morethrows up white foam, gags, hiccups and snores
Comments (6)Thank you for being such a good doggy parent. Nice work. Here is the thing, your may gag or choke after it eats or drinks. My dog is 10 and has been doing this is entire life. Some people say it may be his trachea needs repair, but they are not great in being a successful surgery. Here throwing up sounds like either she is eating too fast, you can slow her down by feeding her half a cup at a time. I dont know what type of breed your dog is, and if it is a deep checsted dog you need to especially careful about overfeeding and too much running around afterwards. I suggest going to a feed every 4 hours or so, this might help with her throwing up. Dogs often build up bile which irritates their stomachs after awhile, then they throw up or eat grass. Frequent feeding will help reduce this problem. As for food, I suggest you buy a premium dog food. It may cost more and you wont be able to get it from the grocery store, but your dog will eat less, poop less, and be healtheir in the long run for it all. I recommend Natural Balance dog food. Otherwise you can stop worrying, your pup sounds like it is doing okay....See Moreyellow bile
Comments (1)Time to make a vet appt. Senior dogs need a little extra care and should have yearly checkups. If it's just a digestive problem they will be able to give you meds to settle her stomach....See Moreconcerned-2008
