I remember a couple years back, the ridgeback my mother used to have ate most of a bar of 80% dark chocolate that had been sitting on the table. she FREAKED out, but he was completely unfazed by it. didn't even need to induce vomiting, he was completely fine.

I'm glad to hear your girl's doing fine :) I know how scary that kind of stuff can be.

Linda, that's scary, I hope she is OK. My dogs seem to be able to eat everything, and believe me the puppy does, lol, with no harmful effects *knock on wood*. Last summer though, my ESP was choking on a ham bone, man, that was so scary. It was stuck in his throat and I had to try and jiggle it loose, finally it came out.. but he hated me for a couple months after that. I was so scared, I can't even imagine how he felt. Wanted to kill DH for giving it to him in the first place.
Just keep an eye on her for a few days. Sometimes they seem to be OK and still go into renal failure a day or two later. I don't wanna scare you, but I have heard of that happening. Did you take hr to the vet anyway and get her levels checked? I really hope she is OK.

I'm glad she's OK. I don't know why they say to use H2O2 to make them barf because it doesn't work. Bailey ate a tray of brownies and I think I poured a bottle of peroxide down her throat. What is in raisins and grapes? Bailey has been eating grapes for years and has never had any problem. She only gets a couple though.

Also don't let your dog eat pumpkin. I found out the hard way after halloween. It won't kill them but you will want to kill the dog afterwards. j/k. My great pyrenees/lab who eats anything that will stand still long enough got hold of some and it causes explosive diarrhea. I am glad to here your dog is doing fine though. Christina

Please everyone listen to Linda. Raisins/ grapes are deadly to dogs. Cause Renal Failure. Also watch when your pooch is outside. If a car is dripping anti-freeze the dogs will lick it up (has glycol in it and is sweet tasting to dogs (and cats). They will die from it, again Renal Failure.
So glad the Newfie has recovered. Scary. Especially with the bigger dogs (I have Grt Danes and Irish Wolfhounds). You can't just pick them up and carry them outside!! Good job, Linda. Gloria

Glad to hear that your baby is ok. They can scare the heck out of ya like a 2yo can. I know my big doggie had a reanl failure scare a few years ago when he counter surfed and got the other dogs meds. He was ok but scared the dicken out of me.

Realy, really glad you saved her! My other half fed one of the huskies (Arrant) a chocolate chip cookie about two years ago. I was just getting ready to go to work & I hear 'Mike - Mike - Arrant's choking!' Of course I run in the other room & poor Arrant had the strangest look on his little face. He was lying on his back and doing a little thrashing about. He was dying & I knew it. The chocolate chip cookie got wedged in his throat - as he had tried to swallow it whole! I stuck my fingers into his mouth trying to get it out - no luck! I could see his eyes as if to say "Help me grandpaw - help me" He started to get limp & I thought for sure he was gone. The look on his face is one I'll NEVER forget. I finally thought it's not going to come out - so the only other place to go was IN! I started pushing it with my index finger - down his little throat & he firmly clamped down on my hand. His last breath was all I could think. Hurt like heck & blood everywhere. I still have the scars on my right hand today from it. I managed to get the darn cookie (finally) down his throat. It crumbled from his saliva & me pushing it I guess. It was a very scary moment! Something one just doesn't forget! Needless to say "NO MORE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES FOR THE DOGS!" And you know what? I'd do it again in a minute if I had to. The dogs are part of the family & should be treated as such - you know, alot like the brugs! lol!

Linda, some ordeal you both just went through. Good thing you knew what to do, and glad your dog is recovering. They are like small children, aren't they?

Mike - yea it is scary. You don't forget those times.

My old pooch (who wasn't old at the time) got into the garbage after thanksgiving one year when we were up in the mountains. Ate an entire Turkey carcass. At that altitude, his stomach was so bloated - we kept waiting for him to digest it. I was frigtened about bones puncturing his intestines. Everyone kept saying "don't worry, he's fine."

Laying trying to sleep, listening to the dog panting, so full, and then suddenly, he stopped breathing, no noise! We couldn't wake him up. Started screaming - woke the whole house up (tons of people in the house up there.)

Pushed on his rib frame to get him to start breathing again - as soon as he did, I screamed THAT'S IT - WE'RE HEADING FOR THE FLATS! Had him grab that 90 pound bloated doggy, I ran to the truck and we raced down the mountain, through the creek, careening around corners in my huge truck yelling you, (pointing at the dog) STAY AWAKE, YOU (pointing to DH at the time) STAY AWAKE TO KEEP HIM AWAKE.

And at the top of my lungs inside the truck "Who the F^%& eats so much they can't BREATHE!?!?" (And he was laughing hysterically while I was in this mass panic)

It usually is a faster trip down than up, 3 1/2 down, 4 1/2 up. We were home in under 3 hours! My truck never went under 80mph once we hit the highway.

We got home, he was fine. Once we got him out of the higher altitude, it took the pressure off his tummy and he was normal again.

Boy what a scare that is. You guys aren't kidding, and Linda, my heart goes out for you and what a scare you had.

Prior to that, the worst was my first doggy got into someone's medicine cabinet and ate a dozen suppositories.

And my other doggie couldn't eat "King Kuts" because of all the gravy he would get. . .well. . .I didn't know that runny poop could move at that volocity sideways. (grin)

Update. So far, so good. Vet said I should have gotten her in time since I acted right away. I will be watching her closely for a couple more days but she is acting perfectly normal now. She will be 9 next month & Newfs don't live long lives but I want to keep her around as long as she has good quality of life. I haven't had any hip or eye or heart problems with her & I consider myself lucky that she has been problem free this long. I have always been so careful when feeding her because of losing my other Newf to bloat, but who knew she would eat the raisins off the counter, she has never touched them before. I already have to hide other food in cupboards or behind closed doors as she has opened both the oven & refrigerator several times to get at what she wanted. I had another Newf years ago that could open doors & windows & could get out of any gate or collar. I padlocked him in his crate & he took the whole top off of it. Now I also have an American Eskimo that jumps 4 foot fences or climbs the taller ones. Some dogs are just too smart for their own good.

I am sure glad your dog is okay and that you knew what to do. I am also just hearing about the raisins and grapes being poisonous to dogs too. My lab is fairly good about not eating most stuff but does chew since she is still a pup.
Its the parrots that I really have to watch- they are like small children. I know avocado seeds and flesh near the seeds are supposed to be poisonous to them- so I don't give them any. I had one parrot get into some datura seeds once and I know he ate some but never had any problems..The wild birds spread them, so maybe they go right through the birds.

But I am so glad AbbieRose is fine. And boy did Mike act fast. . . .

It hurts to see them hurting and when in a full on dangerous situation, your heart stops at the thought of sometehing happeneing to them.

So glad the doggies are ok. So very glad. . .

Glad that AbbieRose is doing much better after that big scare.

I hate to hear when someones pet is hurt or sick. :0(

You are so right parrots are like small children.
I had a conure parrot several years ago and he really
bonded with me, he would screech at supper time untill I
got his little plate fixed for him, LOL when I got him out
of his cage he would sit next to me on the couch arm and if
anyone would sit next to me he would climb up the couch
go behind me and try to bite (usually my youngest son) who
was trying to get him going anyway, he was a very good
guard bird! LOL
I really got attached to him and it broke my heart but had
to let him go to another home, My oldest son who`s
handicapped and Poppy just did`nt get along so for safety`s
sake I gave Poppy to my cousin and I know he went to a
good home.
They are awesome pets but it is like another child in the
house.

Sorry to hear that you had to get rid of your conure, he sounds really cute..but they can also be the noisiest little guys. We have a mini macaw, an amazon, and a jenday conure. The conure is the noisiest out of all of them!
He knows when our car is coming from 3 blocks away (and our car is not loud) and starts screeching his earsplitting welcome- lol. He usually stays in his cage but sometimes I let them all out to play on their playpens on top of the cage but the Amazon really thinks he rules the house and will play 'King Of The Couch' and will get on the couch, strut around like a rooster crowing and dare everyone (including the cats) to try to get on it , which then he will nip at them and laugh an evil laugh.

I just went through 2 weeks of night duty with my litter of puppies and boy did I forget what it is like to be up all night in that light sleep mode. U no the one where you are awake but your eyes wont open. LOL Any how I am so happy all is fine... Brandy

Once I got 3 lbs of dark chocolate covered cherries filled with liquor from europe that I loved. My chow chow got into them and when I got home he had eaten most of them even the foil wrapping. We spent all night observing him for any signs of adverse effects, but he was fine. The next few days we watched him also.

Why can't you give pork to dogs? I've heard of grapes, raisins, onions, and chocolate but never pork. My dog has been eating pork for years. Please let me know.

I've been up in the middle of the nite now twice the last two nites with my dog.

He's so old - and he's having more and more problems.

Brandy they are sooooo cute! I love English Bulldogs. They are just so damn strong. My neighbor got one from a rescue group a few weeks ago. He's pretty well behaved and has a nice disposition but still needs some training. He's only 18 months and strong as an ox. It's so funny to watch Debbie try to walk him. She's not much bigger then me and if he sees something he wants, like Bailey, she can't physically hold onto him. They live directly across the street and she's taken to calling and checking to see if Bailey is visible before taking him on his walk. lol He isn't aggressive, just wants to play.

citrusnut, My friend (who is also president of our local animal welfare group) had a collie who died from eating pork chops. She only ate a few & you would think it wouldn't matter to a dog that size. I think she said there is an enzyme they can't digest, I will check with her & find out.

Karyn, Tell her to get her dog to obedience classes & quick. What would happen if the dog drug her in front of a car? You really need to be able to control your dog to keep both of you safe & a well trained dog is a much better family member. 15 to 20 minutes of training twice a day for 6 to 8 weeks is all it takes.

After all the excitement last week, Abbi took a whole head of cabbage off the kitchen table & started to eat it! I have spent her entire life hiding food from her. In the past she has eaten several loaves of bread (plastic & all) & she knows how to get a full pan of food off the top of the stove without spilling much. She clamps her mouth over the edge & lifts it off, I wish I had a video of it, it's amazing. She has also figured out how to open both the oven & fridge doors but she doesn't do it very often. In her younger days, she could clear a 4 foot chain link fence (Newfs are not supposed to be able to do that). She is 9 now & slowing down & she hasn't jumped the fence for a couple years (I have an American Eskimo to do that for me now).

Linda she does have the dog in obedience training. That's just too big of an animal not to be trained. I knew they couldn't have chocolate and coffee and had heard about grapes and raisins a couple years ago but Bailey has been eating grapes since she was a puppy but only a few at a time. She's never had a problem and her bloodwork has always been normal. One thing that Bailey does with food is she loves pistachios and has learned how to open the shell and just eat the nut. It's the weirdest thing to watch.

Sorry your dog is still not feeling well. All three of ours are limping. The older 2 its arthritis the puppy has a shallow hip socket that they don't want to operate on til she is grown. She at least isn't in pain just runs around hopping sometimes. The dog that died from eating pork chops may have been due to a bone splinter. Pork bones are notorious for the bones splintering and causing interal damage. My dogs eat lots of pork but I won't give them the bones. Just like chicken bones and fish bones.
