Steph, at the very least, your vet should be able to talk to you about the treatment, suspected diagnosis, test results, and such on the phone. It is not unusual to have to have another family member or friend take an animal to the appointment, and the vet should call you to explain everything. I would also be concerned if the vet has not called to see how your dog is doing. Call her/him and ask questions like Annz and Elly suggested. Don't feel bad about asking your vet to recommend an internist or other diagnostic specialist, either. If you are near a university with a good veterinary school, you also might ask your vet if your dog should be referred there. You should be able to have this conversation over the phone if you cannot get away from work to see the vet. If you can't take calls at work, ask the staff to please arrange for the doc to talk to you during your lunch or break time, or before or after work. This is serious stuff and you need to have good communication with the doc in order to make good decisions for your dog. I hope it goes well, and please keep us informed.

debbiep has hit the nail on the head, feed your dog more often. A good breakfast the minute you can possibly manage it in the morning. And a good sized meal in the evening. Use some wet dog food, and feed your dog some good dog food, like Natural Balance. You can use the meat sticks they make as a snack, Our dogs let them lie around and get all hard like jerky, they seem to like it better. My dog has the same problem and as a result he is a free feeder. Other than my fixing him breakfast as soon as I get up (cooked hamburger mixed with Trader Joes dog food and some dog cookies). He always has dog cookies and meat sticks available during the day, and has a good sized bowl of hamburger and Tjs dog food at night (not after 6pm) often he eats after that as well, having another bowl. He is not fat at all. What is happeneing with your dog is that he is digesting his food fast, his stomach is filling with bile which is an irritant and so he throws that up. With my dog this can happen within 4 to 6 hours. Which is why I have food out all the time. He is not interested in it most of the time, and we actually have to encourage him to eat it.

I am so sorry about your loss. Poor Jane knew that you were doing everything you could for her. I lost my Megan like this in January. For her, though, there we absolutely no signs that she was ill until she had internal bleeding from a liver cancer tumor that burst. At the emergency vet, they took one look at her, said "She's a lab mix, so this is probably cancer. If it is in her liver, we'll call you right during the surgery to euthanize her." Liver cancer seems to be common for labs. Well, they were right, and they put her to sleep while she was still under anesthetic from the surgery. I drove back there and petted her until she was cold. I am so sorry to hear of your Jane. I know how you feel about your Jane's suffering. You did everything you could for her, and she tried her hardest for you. You will remember her wonderful presence in your life forever. She is a part of you by way of the lessons she taught you about love and devotion. You will mourn the lack of her company, but a part of her remains in the person you have become. I will think of you and your Jane girl often and send you thoughts of healing and comfort.

I just noticed Natural Balance has an 'organic' category for their dog foods. Someone here was talking about preferring NB's ingredients, and I believe I heard our specialist clinic/ER referring to it as one of the brands they dispense (gonna check). My cat just went on allergenic food, and I did look at their cat food label, and it looked pretty good, without all the garbage in it. Might want to check that one out. Have no idea what the cost is compared to others but a decent food is expensive. Pet Promise is another good brand, recommended by Dr. Weil. I'm no expert on ingredients, but they do a good job for a commercial food. Dr. Weil is excellent, so I certainly trust his judgment. I'm also concerned about the canning process used, as it's actually been linked to hyperthyroid disease in cats. Specifically pop-ups and a preservative of some sort sprayed inside the can. I have had a number of HT cats recent years. My first two cats lived to be ancient on good ole KalKan/Whiskas (when it needed a can opener).
