tile substrate--sheetrock o.k.?

User

i read on an earlier post that sheetrock will want to absorb the moisture from thinset causing tiles to fall off eventually. is this true in all cases? my contractor thinks that priming the sheetrock twice and using wall mastic under my kitchen tile will make it fine. (the tile will be used as a backsplash for the sink area, and will also frame a picture window at the sink.)

tearing out the sheetrock is not a good option for us at this point. the cabinets are nailed to the wall and i'm desperate to have this kitchen finished for guests visiting in late april. what other precautions would you suggest for making the sheetrock a better substrate. heeeeelp!
