I would violate the "rule" against putting artwork on service walls (that contain things like thermostats, light switches, etc. ) and put it where the antler display is now. I would move the antler stuff to the wall over the pass through, which I think is a better location for it anyway, as the one small thingie next to the thermostat is too similar to the size of the thermostat and calls attention to it.

There's something about the particular shade of the frame's gold that's moving me away from the LR as my first choice for location. I'm not sure about the bright gold with the deep maroon of the rug.

Because your bathroom looks very cool, all silver, white, gray, and blue, I also question how well the gold would look in it. Can you post some more pictures of that room?

I'm also uncertain about the gold in the BR, because of what my monitor shows as the cool look of the wall color vs. the warmth of the gold. Perhaps it's not a cool color? Perhaps there's a pinkish cast to the BR wall color?

Maybe it's not the gold per se - those floats remind me of oranges, which in turn makes me think about food...and kitchens!

since there is so much frame and not alot of picture, i would tend to put it where the shield mirror is, assuming it's a similar size as the mirror. (or keep looking for a spot...)

i think it is too small for the area where the antlers are or the bedroom wall, and too gold for the bathroom...
it would fit in the pass thru area, but i wouldn't put it there...

I guess it could also go on the wall to the left of the doorway to the kitchen above the desk and by the light switch, but the light switch may make it be at an odd height. It's not really off for the bathroom. The color isn't as gray blue in real life and has a greenish tinge to it. The kitchen is the same color, but I'd have to hang it above my magnetic knife rack, which is a little strange in terms of height.

My vote would be to replace the small mirror is. Not sure where you would put the mirror, but I think it would add a nice touch to that little wall.

When hanging a single picture on a wall with nothing else you want to have at least the width and length of the frame in wall space around the piece. I don't know if you have that where the shield mirror is hanging, width wise. Your home is so interesting architecturally that there's no reason to try to put something on every wall ---not that there is in any home, but especially one like yours---- so I would remove the shield mirror even if I did not place the painting there.

No, you're not - I think that's not the best idea, either. You want to be able to see it without effort, rather than using it as a space filler, in a place that in my view doesn't need filling.

I vote with bronwynsmom. When I saw the shield mirror, I thought it would look nicer with the antlers (which appear to me to be surrounding a missing element) and the picture would look great where the mirror is now, assuming the size works.

You're right about the missing element. I used to have another pair of antlers there, but it was too prounced. I moved it down to the dining room above the pass through, and I like it much better there. I'll try it tonight and post some pictures of it.

I have very little on the walls in this house, with the exception of my travel photographs posted in a collage of sorts at the landing on the third floor and the large map and ship painting in the living room. The dining room has one painting, a mirror and the mounted antlers. The canopy room has a single oil painting. The bathroom has a single oil painting. My bedroom has a mirror and one small oil painting.

I think it may be a little tight where the shield mirror is, but let's give it a try since there's alreay a hook there.

It's from Homegoods, like all of the others I have. They must have just received a new shipment, and the good ones go quickly. They're pricey, but not too bad (this one was $50, but they're normally $75 for this size).

The painting seems a bit snug where the shield was, in my opinion, but I do like it there, if not a bit lower (the middle is at eye level). I'm not crazy about the shield mirror, and I'm not attached to it, so I don't really care what happens to it. I could just as easily put it in my closet. What do you think?

Please ignore the plaster on the wall and the door trim. I had the bathroom doorway enlarged and haven't painted yet because I bought a new door to match the original one on the left of the antlers, and I haven't finished stripping it. And how come no one commented on the door I have been stripping in the other thread? I need positive reinforcement because it's a total PITA.

Can you zoom out on the artwork hung up? It does look like it's too large for the spot, but it's hard to tell without better perspective.

If you are going to keep the antlers and mirror there you should def move the thermostat. It's not that difficult for an hvac person to do and then have the hole patched and painted. However, I would take the two small thingies down and remove the mirror also. You said you aren't attached to the mirror and the little ones are very mass produced looking.

What's the deal with the antlers anyway; sorry, but I don't get it. Is it a guy thing? Even the little ones? I would take them down along with the mirror and go back to the home store to find another great single piece to hang there. No one will bothered by the thermostat.

Just adding... I am female, and I appreciate the antlers in that space. They wouldn't fit in my home, design wise, but they complement the Ralph Lauren-esque vibe of Kevin's space.

It's not just RL styling, I just like the look. That being said, I've struggled to find a large mount that is real that I like and that doesn't project too far into the room so those three are all fake. The ones in my dining room are real. Even Thomas Jefferson decorated with antlers and skins, etc., albeit as homage to Lewis/Clark and gifts from others.

I will replace them with one set of real ones when I can find the appropriate style, width, and depth.

i'm not much of an antler person myself, but then again i didn't grow up in a hunting family... but, i thought the antlers looked like they should be framing something before and now they are, so i think the mirror helps that wall space... don't love the arrangement, but it's improved.

Well, I like the painting where you have it on that wall. Although I'm not much for antlers and such, I can see where one larger one will enhance your decor. I'm in the West and friends gave us a whole cow head -- the whole bleepin thing, horns, teeth and all. DH loves it, but it gave me the creeps. So after disagreeing and moving the poor thing around the house several times, we finally had it mounted in the powder room, above the door. No one sees it until they enter the room, close the door and look into the mirror.

That must be a little startling for guests. I'm not a fan of the whole head/neck mounts unless at a lodge or bar.

Yeah, that was kind of the purpose. But I haven't heard any startled noises coming from the powder room. At least we're both happy with the "gift" now.

You purchase art because you like it. If you are trying to match it, to me the most logical place would be the bedroom. I had a friend who turned a large closet into his art gallery for everything that didn't match! Only because he loved it. I have given away art over the years because it simply did not go in the home we bought at the time. I gave my children framed letters from Franklin Roosevelt and one put hers in the bathroom. I had a fit over that. So do with it what you please and above all, enjoy it.

What are you using to strip that door? As someone who has stripped untold numbers of layers of varnish off of two sailboats, I commend you! Actually, the door is looking pretty cool in its stripped state.

I really like that picture, and it deserves a good place. Where you put it in your picture looks very nice.

What I really want to suggest, though, is to paint those utility covers in the bathroom with the same paint as the walls. They shouldn't be any more capable than a spider web of competing with the decor of a room. If you did and put the picture in there to focus attention, I'm guessing almost no one would ever notice they were there.

Mtnrdredux, I've got many of them, purchased over a year and a half or two. I know you really liked the one in the bathroom, and so did I, but I didn't really like the gold part of the inner frame. So I finally found a silver toned one and swapped it out last week. I also ditched the antler collage and put in an oil horse painting, moved a small antler over to the small wall by the fireplace, moved the new one (well, new at the time) down to the dining room above the secretary desk, moved the one that had been in the bathroom up to the master bedroom, and moved the one where that one now is to over by the tartan chair and curtains. And then there's the two I've had: one in the canopy room and the ship one between the windows in the living room. You really cannot beat them for $50 - $80 a piece (assuming they're right for the space).

And here's the damn door I've spent a month stripping and repainting and finding matching door hardware and polishing the brass mortise, and getting a matching skeleton key and tassel for the bathroom. So, it's done; it just needs to be hung, and I need to get some nice cast iron or black hinges.
