can you recommend best small dog car seat?

I am in search of a dog booster car seat for a Shih Tsu. My 90 year old father just got his pet, Lucky. Can someone recommend a dog car seat that is easy to work with for a 90 year old? If it's too complicated, my dad will not use it. Also, this little dog loves to look out the car window. I am seeing on-line the pet coupe car seat, lookout pet booster seat, cushioned booster car seat. If anyone has suggestions, it is very much appreciated.

I think the simplest thing to use is a portable kennel. I stack one in the back seat on top of phone books and that makes it possible to look out the window. I have a seatbelt harness and it has taken months to figure out how to finally connect the doggone thing correctly. It drives me nuts. The thought of a 90 year old driving with added distraction is somewhat worrisome to me. :-)

My friends have two chiuhahuas, they have two seats, they are huge cushioned seats which allow the dog a small little depression in which to sit or lay down and it is high enough that the dogs can see out the window. Check your local pet stores or on line for a dealer.

I found a vehicle with leather seats for my current vehicle for that reason... I have a tan cocker spaniel and a black lab cross... which is nuts, because I can't even go with a color to at least have it blend until it's cleaned up... one of them will always clash... oh well... Once you get it clean there are seat protectors which are waterproof and the hair does not seem to get through (at least it did a great job in our car prior to this one) The floor weren't as much of an issue, but we just shook out the seat protector and threw it in the wash every so often... I don't know if this is actually safe or not, but I have 2 large dogs & I drive an Avalanche. They go every Sunday w/ me to my parents house to play w/ their dog. Anyway, the Avalanche has the fold down seat that opens up into the covered bed of the truck & that is where my dogs lay (where the back seat is). They are usually pretty hyper when they first get in, but they calm down & lay there until we get to "grandma's"... then, it's a whole different story! :) Anyway, w/ this arrangement, I feel like my dogs are as safe as I can possible get them w/o crates. The front seats & the covered bed are on both sides of them to protect them, and the heighth of the front seats would definitly keep them from flying into the front w/ me. But, they are not buckled in in anyway, I'm not sure I could even do that w/ my St. Bernard since I don't know if he could comfortably/safely sit on the seat.

Great ideas ! The vet gave her Rimadyl for pain and antibiotics (just incase) Right now - I put a sock over her bandage . ( one of my old ones that I bought way too small. ) I taped the top and so far she hasn't bothered it. DH & I have to be gone tonight for about 4 hours - I just know the little stinker is waiting till we leave to have at it. I think I'm going to do what was suggested - go get some bandage stuff and wrap her foot up really good . At least this time if she tugs at it while we're gone - it'll take her till we get home to get it off. I'm off to check the site on how to wrap it. Thanks sooo much for the help . Believe me - she is never going NEAR our gate again (wasn't closed tightly )and she saw a dog across the street . Totally our fault and I'm sure we'll feel guilty about this the rest of our lives.Anyway - I'm so glad I have this forum to help me ! ((everyone))

My dog has food allergies. I tried lots of the premium foods, Innova, CA Natural, etc. Nothing helped. For the past year he has been eating Timberwolf. You can find it at www.timberwolforganics.com. It is not cheap but he hasn't had any problems on it and now at age 11 is a furry bear. No vet bills for skin issues. You can order directly from the manufacturer and shipping is free. That would eliminate your problem of limited local resources. It would be worth a try. One thing though, he doesn't eat anything other than this brand. we have 4 mini schnauzers and 4 car seats. I can't remember where we got them but the seats are completely foam with a removable-washable cover. They come with a strap and clip. You put car seat in and strap the seat belt across it and lock, take the strap lock it to the seat belt and clip it to the dogs harness. Use only with harness because if for some reason the dog decides not to stay in seat and jumps he will choke. Mine stay in their seats, if they do jump they can't go anywhere like kids they are strapped in. The seats are very comfortable and you just leave it in the car. Drop the dog in the seat clip to harness and off you go. Look on line under dog car seats. Good luck.

I emailed my friend with a mini-doxie about this. Her little guys goes *everywhere* with her all day along as she runs a catering company. She uses a "Kyjen Outward Hound" car seat (about $30 on amazon) in one car and a "snoozer" booster seat (around $80 on amazon) her delivery van. Here is what she had to say about each.

"The Kyjen's initial setup was easy. Now I just plop Mick in the top basket and off we go. It is inflated, not solid foam like the Snoozer. The sides of the top basket are 8" hight and mesh. Mick hasn't tried to jump, but some dogs would. Harnesses the dog and clipping it to the booster would remedy them jumping or bouncing out while driving.

The Snoozer is deeper, more cushy and sports a removable, washable cover. It is a little trickier to install, but once in the car you just put you dog in and clip the harness to a strap within.

For the money, the Kyjen is great, but I prefer the Snoozer hands down. It is more like a bed."

Hope that helps :) I think it is fantastic your dad is still out and about at 90! If he can clip a leash, then he can clip the halter onto the booster.
