My dog got hit by a car ... she's lucky

Friday my Puppy ,Poppy .... darted out into the street and got hit by a car. She was soooo lucky - she just lost a back toenail and got a ton of stitches on the back leg.

She just won't leave the bandage alone. I didn't think she'd need the eliz.collar so we didn't take it. I was wrong. Now it's the weekend - she won't stop picking and licking at it. Any suggestions ? I taped a plastic bag over it for the night time - but I think it needs air . Till I can see the vet to get the collar - any suggestions ?

PetCo sells the collars.

Until you can get the collar(and you do need one), you can try giving her some Benadryl(Diphenhydramine) to help her relax and sleep. It will also help the itching that comes with a healing wound. It is a common antihistamine used for dogs with allergies and is sometimes used as a mild sedative. Make sure to use a product with Diphenhydramine only, and no other medications mixed in with it. Also pick up some additional bandage material to keep on hand if you can't get to the vet for your re-wrap appointments, or if the bandage should get wet: Telpha pads, gauze, Vet Wrap(the stretchy stuff)and adhesive tape. Have the one of the techs show you how they wrap it. Good luck.

Sorry I see things different than you but then I was only going by several post you wrote. I don't doubt you run in to racism, in fact I see racism happening too damn often. I just found it sad that you seem to blame any negitive (or what you perceive as negitive)action toward you on someone being racist. The Apt living forum is full of posts complaining about rude and nasty neighbors. When you live in Apts you have a good chance of sharing your living space with creeps,idiots or some form of low lifes.These type of people bother everyone around them. You seem to think you are picked out because of your race first and always. I am not saying it hasn't happened, I am sure it has. After reading so many of your posts screaming racism I started seeing a pattern. Then when you wrote in asking if you had made a big mistake bringing up that your husband traveled to Cuba often. You made it sound as if saying such a thing was a big NO NO, living here? As if the average person in the US would have a problem with that? I can tell you that the average American could care less where you or your family travels.You seem to be first to seperate yourself as being different with anyone you come in contact with and if things don't go smoothly your first reaction is to blame "race" Your race, their race. People have run in's with weirdo's everyday as they go through life and race has nothing to do with it. Believe me you don't have to be of another race to be treated wrong by others. I apologize if you felt I was being insenitve or doubting your negitive experiences with racism. I didn't mean to do that. I was trying to show you that you come off as a person who blames every situation that doesn't go your way on racism. To me you seem a bit racist yourself. Could that be true? Glad that it wasn't a bang on the driver's door, girl! Not long after I got this car, I thought that I went into an intersection on a green ... and a car that came through three lanes hit on the driver's side ... but back at the back tire area. I was ... substantially ... very substantially ... thankful! It seemed to be the general concensus that I'd run a red light ... but I figure that he ran a yellow, as when my car had been turned around about 180 degrees - there, staring at me through the windsheld, was a green light, in the same direction that I'd been travelling ... and if I'd run a red light, it should have been red! Anyway - I also like to pick spaces in parking lots where I can drive out (but must confess to being a bit too lazy/(mis-guided?) to back into empty spaces). I hear that a bit of a longer walk is good for one's constitution? By the way ... did you say that the grandkid is wanting a car? Hhm-mm-mm-m! Hope that the rest of your weekend goes better. I, too, value my wheels ... and one needs be extra careful around here, for if one in 70s or higher is in a fender-bender or two, one is liable to get a letter from the Ministry of Transportation to say that they are cancelling one's driving permit. We have a discussion session of about an hour and a half with about a dozen others, with a test of knowledge and signs, with some being selected for a driving test, every two years after age 80. ole joyful P.S. As I was fairly sure that there were still quite a few good miles in that little 20-year-old Mazda that I'd bought only a few months earlier, after the accident I chose to repair it, at a cost larger than I'd paid for it ... partly for environmental reasons, as it costs a great deal of scarce and precious fuel to dig iron ore from the ground, smelt it, then carry it through all of the manufacturing operations ... plus add quite a lot of petroleum-based plastic, to build a new one, but repair is mainly a lot of work. Thank you all, especially circuspeanut with the photoshop pic - absolutely right, that's the way it's supposed to look! Now I feel really silly. Until you posted that picture, I was doing an about-face with Coco Chanel's advice ;-) The CG already brought them home yesterday to cut them down and we're going to velcro them, and then I'll post another picture. Stay tuned next week...I could just see it now - the legs will be popping on and off as I make up my mind!

(((alisande))) Here, I'll make it the third one? Maybe. I was driving home the other day, and I had a blowout! Not just a flat tire. We heard BANG! and I said, what was that? He said maybe we ran over a rock? And then the car started to try to swerve. I did keep control and then I heard it--a flat tire. As I pulled over, it was smoking! Smelled like burned rubber to me, and it practically welded the tire to the axle?! What's worse? I just got the car in July (used, it's 18 years old) and I hadn't checked the spare to make sure it fit and was in good shape :O The equipment to change the tire didn't really fit or work well :( The jack would only turn a half turn at a time. The tire iron was too long? It kept hitting the ground. What was cool though? Someone else had fixed a flat in the exact same spot, and accidentally left a tire iron-that fit my bolts. I had another shorter tire iron, but it too, did not fit. So it took three tire irons, a lot of turning for the jack, and holding my breath for the tire to work. Yep, the tire turned out ok. I had planned to buy new tires next month, but now, I will have new tires this weekend. Two more days instead of two more weeks... hurray! Back to normal then. Whew. Now, we don't need a third car incident. How's that for closing the loop? Well, I tried!

Sorry to hear about your pup. Sounds like he will be okay once you get him to stop biting at the wound site.

I would be careful with the benedryl. How old is the puppy, what is the weight of the puppy, did the emergency care include any type of medication that you may not want to add benedryl into the mix of?

I would crate the pup as much as possible with a blanket and maybe he will sleep. That said, I have one that after his neuter (no big deal usually), licked, chewed until we went thru two collars, a t-shirt, etc. Some dogs just go at their wounds.

I'm not sure if the wound is itchy at this point, tho. It just happened on Friday. I would think the stiches would not itch for a few more days.

Best of luck to you. Doesn't it seem like this kind of stuff always happens on a weekend. I am so thankful our vet does answer emergency calls 24/7.

You can make a temporary e-collar easily enough out of light cardboard (like a dry cleaner uses when wrapping shirts) or posterboard. Go to WalMart or some place where you can buy a sheet (or several, for practice sake) of posterboard. Wrap it around your dog's head into a cone shape, then mark it with a Sharpie so you'll know where to cut out the cone. You can secure it around your dog's head with removable tape or some sticky-backed velcro tape if you want the flexibility to resize it. It should last until you can get to your vet tomorrow for a plastic one.

Benadryl/diphenhydramine can make some individuals, myself included, extremely hyper and irritable. I wouldn't use it now unless you know that she gets sedated with it.
You're right about the plastic bag- the wound needs air to heal. You can try large tube socks depending on how big your pup is.
I liked the suggestions for homemade e-collars. I've also seen people use lampshades and buckets in a pinch. But petco/petsmart and other big pet stores should sell them if they are open in your area on Sundays. Might also pick up some Bitter Apple and LIGHTLY spray the bandage, not so much as to make it wet, just to make it smell bad.
Licking and chewing at the bandage is bad because if she does it enough, the material will get wet, predisposing for an infection.
Good luck. Preventing a motivated dog from doing something is very difficult!

Great ideas ! The vet gave her Rimadyl for pain and antibiotics (just incase) Right now - I put a sock over her bandage . ( one of my old ones that I bought way too small. ) I taped the top and so far she hasn't bothered it. DH & I have to be gone tonight for about 4 hours - I just know the little stinker is waiting till we leave to have at it. I think I'm going to do what was suggested - go get some bandage stuff and wrap her foot up really good . At least this time if she tugs at it while we're gone - it'll take her till we get home to get it off.
I'm off to check the site on how to wrap it. Thanks sooo much for the help . Believe me - she is never going NEAR our gate again (wasn't closed tightly )and she saw a dog across the street . Totally our fault and I'm sure we'll feel guilty about this the rest of our lives.Anyway - I'm so glad I have this forum to help me ! ((everyone))
