Its Time

On monday the vet is coming to my home to put my little girl to sleep, Her name is Molly, she is an 11 yr old Cavapoo. Since first being told she had Kidney trouble 2 yrs ago its been a voyage of emotions, She is very loved and an important member of our family, I know its her time to go, I myself made the decision because I can't stand to see her so thin and in pain, but why do I feel like I am betraying her? outwardly I am calm and dealing with the situation, inside Im breaking apart, my hearts going to explode, how do I cope with the lonely times ahead? I love her and will miss her so very much.

It is the worst thing about the best part of our lives. You are not betraying her, merely helping her to go peacefully.

I wish you strength and peace during this most difficult time.

I'm not sure if this comment will be seen, since this post is years old, but I wanted to explain why we say that a plant likes to be tight in its pot. House plants thrive when they're tighter in their pots because it allows for energy to be put into their leaves. When a pot is too big for the root system, the plant diverts all of its energy into developing roots to fill out the pot. This takes energy away from the foliage, and will slow down leaf/stem growth, and can cause the plant to drop leaves to make more energy in the root systems. Bigger pots also mean more soil to water. When there's more soil to water, the soil takes longer to dry out, which leads to roots sitting in wet soil for too long, which leads to root rot. So when we say "this plant likes to be tight in its pot" it's because of all of the above stated reasons. In nature, the moisture is usually evenly dispersed throughout the soil. There's also plenty of sunlight and wind to stimulate growth. Indoor conditions are vastly different, therefore the care is vastly different.

A weak and stressed plant is an open door invitation for many pathogens but some only require the right conditions to infect your plant. You may notice a row of landscape conifers with one brown or yellowing plant sticking out like a sore thumb and is likely the result of a phytophthora root rot of one phyto species, but all the other conifers are health and unaffected even when all are susceptible. That one brown Taxus conifer may be sitting in compacted soil with bad drainage and dead meat for the Phyto. At least a few of the 100's of Phyto species will be in any given soil so always assume there may be one that can attack your plants, and if you have that special Phyto spore they're having a hay day swimming through your water logged soil to get to your plant roots. (They swim and are attracted to chemicals from the roots of plants.) If you want to confirm or eliminate Phytophthora you can buy a rapid test kit for about $12 to test infected plant tissue and takes about 10 minutes. But a single kit can't be found and sellers require a 5 kit minimum. Maybe they have them at your work? You can also bait the soil to see if phyto is present. Search phytophthora baiting on youtube to learn how. You only need an organic apple or pear. Neither test will tell you what species it may be. I Kind of suspect you have poor drainage just from the nice flat ground your plants sit in from the pics in your other thread. And your layout suggests you do a lot of walking through the garden to get around, and with every step you compact the soil. Kindly take a bunch of pictures of the entire site (yard) from all corners and post them. I spent thousands on my gardens moving 100's of yards of dirt, grading and digging washes to flow to containment area's to drain my gardens. (big gardens for veggies) I break up subsoil compaction down to 14 inches, till down 6 inches and raise the beds 6 inches with hilling discs to insure good drainage because of the type of soil I have. I never walk on any ground within 1 1/2 feet of my transplants to avoid compaction, you should do the same. I think you said it's always moist, but how moist. If you can't push a stick 4 to 6 inches in the ground by hand it's compacted. Dig a hole 12 inches by about 8 inches wide and fill with water, then 12 hours later fill again and time how long it takes to drain. If it drops less than 2" an hour your have a drainage problem. less than 1" a very serious drainage issue. You may need to haul in dirt and build berms to plant on (and may look better). But first do the tests to see. No guessing. Concerning verticillium wilt you need to determine your plants susceptibility to the pathogen. Look for a common links, or a broken link if a resistant plant is also infected. Are any of the neighbor's plants on the other side of the fence showing problem? Does the neighbor's property drain into yours? Pictures, show me the pictures of the entire site.

I have suddenly started getting the phishing emails from Russian IPs. Most are of the "your account has been locked" variety although one was the "I have hacked your account, I saw you on the porn site...." classic. They all have huge attachments (judging from the amount of code that shows in the headers) that I fear contain malware. I always check the source of the emails and when possible, file an abuse complaint with the IP or domain name server. Doing this has cut the spam down from several a day to just 2-3 per week. But, I am not going to message the Russian entities, thinking that that would just confirm a valid address to them (since I don't know how involved they may be in the spam).

I'm just going to share a book recommendation again. It's The Grieving Brain by Mary Frances O'Connor, a neuro scientist. One point she emphasizes is that to move through the worst grief, our brains have to literally learn that our loved one is not going to reappear (in this life, if you believe in other reunions). So she encourages grievers not to engage in the "what-ifs" or "could have/should have" regrets. That's because when we think that, we keep our loved ones alive in that part of our brain which has not yet learned otherwise. For example, thinking "If I had put Molly's eye visor on, not her fly mask...." is using a part of my brain where Molly is still alive, wearing her eye visor. That results in the anguish from the contradiction since she is, in another part of my brain, not alive outside wearing her visor. Grief eases as the contradiction eases, but not if we don't help the brain habituate to the absence. (O'Connor says that sense of "wrongness", from them not being where the brain expects them to be in our lives, will ease for all losses but for some, never disappears totally. I know that's also true for me.)

It's very hard to do what you're planning, but in the end, remember she won't suffer any more. There's nothing worse that seeing your loved pet suffer, and it's a sad responsibility we as pet owners have.

It's nice that your vet will come to your home, will be a lot calmer for Molly. Try to be strong for her until it's over, then you can fall apart, so she doesn't pick up your emotions.

i'm so sorry to read you will be losing molly. this is such a hard decision to make but in the end, we must lay our pets to rest with dignity. i commend you for seeing that it is time to send molly over the bridge.

each time i have done this, i have made a special day happen. i take my pet with me everywhere i go, we go to favorite places, just the 2 of us. we walk through the woods for some quiet time, go through the drive up window for a cheeseburger, just spend the day together making memories.

on the day i take my pet in or in some cases, have my vet come to the farm, i choose a special treat, one i know my pet would love but has always been forbidden to have. usually, it's a hershey bar. when i know the time is near, we go outside and sit under a shade tree or out in the sunshine and we share a hershey bar. i get one little square, my dog gets the rest. it seems to help me come to terms with it all.

maybe you could make a special day for just you and molly to spend together this weekend. it can be a celebration of her life. and on monday, hold her close to you and let the love in your eyes be the last thing she sees and your soothing voice be the last thing she hears as you ease her pain.

My baby girl passed away wrapped in my arms against my heart, it was the hardest thing Ive ever done, The pain I feel right now is way beyond anything Ive ever experienced before but at least my Molly isn't in pain anymore, I still see her out of the corner of my eye, I still catch the scent of her shampoo from time to time, I can't move anything that belongs to her yet, her blankets, water etc, not until she comes home, I picked a lovely little box with a pink flower on and her photo on the top, I love her so much, I will always miss her.. Sleep well baby.. x

I am so sorry. I know you must feel raw, and aching right now. Please know that you are being thought of with sympathy and caring thoughts right now. I wish I could make it better.

Just take each moment one breath at a time and allow yourself time to grieve.

I'm bawling all over again...... We just had to let our little Ellie (Ragdoll kitty) go on Saturday, we too had a mobile vet come to the house--as much for her as for her companion so he could be present and know why she would no longer be around. We're still grieving, but each day our breathing gets a little better.

I'm sure there's some "relief" wrapped up in all that grief---relief that you don't have to watch the suffering anymore, that you don't have to worry about "doing the right thing" anymore. Grab a hold of that. It helps.

My condolences on the loss of your precious Molly.......

much hugs. I am soooo very sorry for your loss. I recently lost Mocha and Rusty and I know its a terrible pain in your heart. She truly is in a much better place though and probably watching over you. At least that is what I like to think.

You had to make that hard decision to do what was right for her. As much as we want to keep them and love them, its not right to let them suffer, and they can't do it themselves.

You'll miss her, but it does get easier over time. Eventually, you get to a place where you remember the happy times you had with her and the tears get replaced with smiles.
