Thanks for the tips, Housefairy and Dadoes. Bookert, the washer replaced a Maytag that was still working. I moved the laundry area from the dungeon basement to the first floor, and decided to start fresh with two new machines. (The dryer gave up the ghost two years ago.) I didn't even know that Speed Queen made washers for the home until I came here and started reading. I think if you do a search on Speed Queen at this forum you'll learn a lot about them. Linked below is my original post about choosing a washer. Elsewhere on the web, I read nothing but good reviews for Speed Queen, and this model in particular. Also another model with a few more cycles, which costs a little more. The biggest selling point for SQ is reliability. The machine comes with a three-year warranty (as opposed to the usual one-year). It is made in the USA and uses metal (not plastic) parts. I read that it's gentle on clothes. I haven't given it any real cleaning challenges yet, but I can say that everything looks clean so far. SQ costs more than the GE, Maytag, Whirlpool lineup. I paid $539 for the floor model, which was about $100 off for that store. I found one elsewhere (not a floor model) for $598. Had I not decided to buy it, my next step would have been to investigate Whirlpool's models. I heard a lot of good things about that brand, too. Good luck! I suppose it's possible that 0" of clearance would work if you don't have to have any cords, water lines or venting out the back. Otherwise, I don't see that as being possible. Will the doors warp? Depends on the material and construction. Many people here have commented that either they need extra deep cabinets or the washer and dryer will stick out from standard cabinets from a few inches. Sounds like it's the same issue for you. Another thought. If you can have it perfectly lined up you could certainly have a nice short straight shot out for the vent. Would certainly maximize the drying efficiency as far as venting. But when you think about the size of the vent, if you have to run it and elbows, you'll need some space. Also keep in mind if you ever have to replace the dryer you probably won't have the exact same measurements and keep in mind facilitating access for repairs and maintenance. There are some "periscope" rectangular units that might save a bit of space. Is it really a problem to have it come out a few inches? Or could you make the surrounding cabinets all a bit deeper?

If your stairs won't take a standard American 27" machine, your selection will be limited. Take a look at the Electrolux offerings in compact size 24". They are specifically rated for second floor installation. The European Miele and Asko should fit too. I believe Whirlpool/Maytag also has a compact model. I can't recommend GE or Samsung based on personal experience with standard sized machines.

As promised here is a photo of my laundry closet. As you can see I must take the door down to service the machines. I also included a water shut off alarm in case of a leak and manual electronic shut off valves. They are turned off every time I am finished doing the laundry. It has been this way for 13 years with no issues. I would change the doors to your laundry closet or cut off an inch from both the bottom and top and cal it a day. And yes, I think you can just add a bathroom type fan to vent the closet.
