How Do You Cover Mosaics & Accent Tiles Before Pool Finish?
Comments (5)Hi Space Man-- I haven't decided if edging/accent tile on the steps would be the right look for my pool design, so I was hoping I could play around with it after the concrete stage before making a final decision. I also had no idea what the PB would charge per linear foot to add trim tile. I thought if I paid for it (tile and labor ahead of time) I would be stuck going ahead with it. I have known people who didn't put it in at the start and then added it later. You could see the difference in the finish when this was done--so I know its best to do this the first time around. However, I have not seen the newer pebble finishes with step/trim tile so don't know if it is harder or easier to see steps and bench edges with a pebble-type finish or not. Anyone whose had experience with both types (plain white/solid color vs. pebble) who can speak from experience? Spacemen, I remember looking at your build thread several times. Very, very, nice. I love the natural look, but we can't get away with some of the stone materials like the beautiful slates and I am also hesitant about faux rock holding up here in the Northeast (though I have seen it done). Maybe next time if we move south. However, I am trying to incorporate natural rock materials in the coping and spa facing part of the design. Comments (5)New venetian gold can read fairly calm or strong, depending on the slab. If your granite is strong, I would be careful about adding too much pattern to your back splash. Buxton Blue is also going to add strong contrast between your cabinets and walls. You don't want the granite and the wall color and the back splash to be fighting for attention. Comments (8)This isn't a victorian or even period kitchen, but I do have a hood which we tiled later so I thought I'd share some of the details to see if I could help. I must admit up front that this hood design was inspired by a fabulous tiled hood I saw on GW (it's white with mexican tiles and I can't for the life of me remember the name). This is the finished hood: It's a vent a hood insert though...the rest was designed by me and the carpenter we had on site at the time: The hood is made of marine grade plywood (handles wet better) but is 100% lined with the vent a hood insert which we had rebuilt to the size we needed (french range, american hood). The insert is actually mounted to the wall and hung from huge chains inside the wood body. This is a picture of the hood prior to being plastered (applied over the plywood). The black area is granite tile which is trimmed out in cherry we had made to act as a frame (it has a lip the same debth as the tile so it tucked in as in a frame). Our tile is grouted, and mounted with standard tile stuff (what ever you call the crap that tile is applied to LOL). Our hood weighs a ton, and you do need to take that into consideration when you are adding tile to a wood hood, hence the stronger plywood and chains. Six guys did pull ups on it to test it :) And this is the only in progress showing the plywood with no trim...It's a pretty basic shape and easy to copy: I am now working on a victorian kitchen and have to say that the hood itself could easily be transitioned to a victorian feel with tile on a white painted hoood. And of course...high ceilings! I had to do that hood on a ceiling of less than 8' which was a challenge! I don't know how traditional you're going...in my victorian I'm hiding the hood in a nook because hoods weren't really found in a victorian kitchen. But if you're not going that true to the look, you could easily have the feel with a tile trim or total tile hood :) CP has a great example! I love that kitchen. MY hood is framed much like salmon's with plywood and two by fours. I'd personally do that again verses paying a huge price for a wood hood from a manufacturer. Especially with a painted hood with tile highlights...no need to drop the hard cash on that one, and I think you can still get wow (at least I think our hood is wow LOL) Ohh by the way..I just reviewed the post and see I forgot to add...the top of the hood is plywood with drywall over it on which we added plaster (had a little dude from venice come and do it the old fashioned way)....See MoreIs mosaic tile safer for shower floor?
Comments (9)Does your GC or tile guy have an opinion on installation? The shower floor needs to slope to the drain, which is another reason why they want small tiles. (you probably know this, but with small tiles, the grout between the tiles helps create a non-stick surface). FWIW, I've been a caregiver for my aging parents, and it's making me think about "aging in place." (In my shower, I'm adding blocking so we can add grab-bars later. Whoo-hoo.). Would you let a fragile 85 year old loved one use this shower? (or, will this become an issue for future owners?) If it were me, I'd play it safe and go with the known safe alternative. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but it someone slips, they could really hurt themselves. Is a beautiful floor worth-it?...See Moreaquariuslady
