Glass mosaic tiles for backsplash

I've just done a complete kitchen re-do except for the backsplash. I've got ivory cabinets with a chocolate glaze. I've used oil-rubbed bronze knobs, ceiling fan, and faucet. My granite is New Venetian Gold that I only had run straight to the wall, with no granite backsplash at all. My wall color is BM Buxton Blue.

I'd like to do a glass mosaic tile for the backsplash, but have a few questions. Just curious for everyone's opinions on whether they prefer the small squares or the rectangular ones. I like the look of both, but I'm wondering if the small square ones would look too "busy." Also, when I go to look for tiles, I don't necessarily want to get something that will match the Buxton Blue (love the BB, but who knows if I'll change paint colors down the road), but want something that won't clash with it either.

Since I've just moved, I'm not sure I can put my hands on the cable I would need to upload a picture, but any suggestions you can offer based on my description would be appreciated.

The last time I renovated a kitchen was about 12 years ago, at our previous house. We did granite there with the little four-inch granite backsplash. I had always meant to go back and add a tumbled marble backsplash but never did. It seems most are going with the glass tiles now.

I prefer the small rectangles:

versus the small squares.
If you want to do squares, 2x2's may work.

I prefer the rectangles as well.

We used large-format marble tiles (18x18"). We love them. I guess it could scratch, but we have not seen any scratches yet. No problems with staining or anything. The large format meant that we have few grout lines. Here's a link to our pics. "I see lots of backsplashes where the tile sits right on top of the countertop with no room for grout or caulking." A joint the same width as the grout joints should be there, and caulked. If caulk that matches the grout is used it often looks very good.

I agree about using a creamy subway. But I also think it needs a touch of color too. In my kitchen I used white subway with red diamond inserts. But then again, I know I'll always have red accessories. I also have scroll tile and it does add a "pop" to the room. A copper colored insert would be beautiful with your cabs and granite. It doesn't have to be diamond shape either. Below is the website where I ordered our backsplash. They will send you free samples also. The page given is under Porcelain, but they have everything from glass, to metal, in all colors and designs imaginable. They're a bit on the pricey side, but well worth the extra bucks. I think of the mosaics, the small rectangles will be the least dated in ten years. The standard small squares and the very long, skinny, highly contrasted mosaics will be the most dated.

We went with a mini stacked brick pattern for a modern Reno of an MCM kitchen. I liked that it was different than everything else I was seeing, and that it seemed to reference the era of our house rather than just the current trend in backsplashes.

New venetian gold can read fairly calm or strong, depending on the slab. If your granite is strong, I would be careful about adding too much pattern to your back splash. Buxton Blue is also going to add strong contrast between your cabinets and walls. You don't want the granite and the wall color and the back splash to be fighting for attention.

Here's a cream gloss subway. A cream or beige glass subway will have a similar look plus some additional sparkle.

Deee, thank you for the examples. That first picture...yikes! I wouldn't consider my new Venetian gold to be particularly strong but I have been worrying about a backsplash competing with it, thus my posting here. I haven't particularly cared for subway tiles before, but they look great in the pic you posted.

Of the mosaics I prefer the small rectangles and it seems most of y'all do as well. I'm also going to consider some other types after seeing Deee's examples.
