Plumbing a dresser for vanity

I have an old dresser that I would love to turn into my bathroom vanity but I am not sure if the plumbing will work with it. The dresser has two narrow top drawers and two larger bottom drawers. I would love to salvage as much of them as possible to store linens and things. I know the plumbing can take up a large space. Right now our plumbing drops down at least 17 in into our current vanity. Is there any way to "shorten" this so it won't use up all the drawers? Is there any other way? I have considered using vessel sinks but think I would prefer drop in. Thanks for the help.

Not really--you need a P-trap under the sink, and that's below the depth of the sink itself. So a shallower sink might help, but there's a limit to how "short" you can make things.

You can narrow the bottom drawers by cutting the box in half and leaving the front the same size. This would give you a vertical space in the middle and four drawers to use, although the bottom ones are not as wide as before.

OOOH am I glad I found this site. I bought an entire bedroom set at an auction for $35 (included a head/foot board, tall dresser, and mirrored dresser). I found it last year and bought it because I liked the mirrored dresser and plan to use it in my bathroom. I have a coworker that used a small dresser for a vanity in her bathroom and I loved it. On the one I bought, the mirror has the middle section with two narrower side panels to it and all are surrounded with wood and I plan to mount this to the wall over the dresser. I have not yet decided what to do with the top - use a whole new countertop or have a sink dropped into the existing top. My question here is this: the wood is already stained dark and I like it but, since will be exposed to water and steam, should I somehow seal it? My friend painted hers so that sealed the wood. This is an older piece (1930's maybe at the latest) and I want to make sure it's sealed against swelling. Do I use regular varnish, marine varnish? And will this extra layer make the drawers tighter and harder to close? I know about making room for the plumbing but I have not seen any discussion about protecting the wood from the dampness. ALAS! I took the piece of furniture to 2 marble stores today, and both said the piece isn't deep enough to accomodate a sink and faucet (it's only like 19 inches deep). I could do a vessel sink, but I don't really want to... The piece is just a couple of inches too shallow. Someone suggested extending the back by adding wood on the sides, but by the time I do that - well, it's just gotten too complicated and expensive. So thank you everyone for your suggestions. On a bathroom vanity, what is minimum width for door to plumbing?

Depend's on the size of person working underneath but 12" is about as narrow as I've worked in. Your basin will be at least 18" wide so if center drawers aren't 14" or wider you'll have to also alter top drawer on side.
