Would You Buy a Used Car From This Man?

There's one of those horrible used car places near me--the kind that sells cars cheap, that has the obnoxious TV ads with the announcer who shouts at you.

They've reached a new low. This last week, they've got a raft of new commercials, done by none other than.... da dah..... the kind of sleeze--Jerry Springer! Do they REALLY think that's an enticement for someone to buy from them? LOL--I do laugh at the commercials, but I would NEVER buy a car from them. No way, no how.

That is about as low as you can get. Yesterday I was clicking through the TV channels and briefly paused on Jerry Springer. There were several shirtless guys fighting each other while Springer watched. I couldn't change the channel fast enough. I haven't seen the car commercials yet- but I'm sure I'll catch one sooner or later. They must be the pride of South Jersey!

The thing to remember is that buying any car is a gamble. New ones have a warranty, with an accompanying big price tag. A used car is more of a gamble unless you know who's selling it and how it's been cared for. Even if all's well, things still break. You can reduce your chances of unpleasant surprises by deciding on a year, make, model ahead of time and look only for that car. The year can vary a little as long as the design hasn't changed much. Then educate yourself on that particular car before you go shoping. When you get an idea of what you might want to buy, do some research as to what the maintainence costs for that vehicle are. IMO, forums like this are a good place to look. There are forums for honda, toyota, chevy, most anything you can think of. After doing the research, you might conclude your first choice wasn't a good one and explore something different. Keep in mind all cars need things. Belts, hoses, coolant changes, spark plugs, wires and such every 30k. Transmission service at 30k to 100k. Some have a timing belt that needs to be replaced at 100k. Brake life varies, for me they last about 70k at a time. ect. Read through the forums to see if the particular model you're considering has any common problems. Some engines seem to develope sludge easier than others. All will if neglected. If the previous owner hasn't changed the oil as often as he should, or used dino oil when synthetic was required, there could be a serious problem on the horizon. Is it a car that needs a timing belt every 100k, it's a $1000 service, and the vehicle has 110k on it now and never been changed? Something to consider. Don't forget to check the tires. If the tread is about gone, that's another $200+ you may end up adding to the original price tag before you know it. Easy to overlook that kind of thing while admiring the shiney paint. Keeping all that in mind and tenatively making a choice, it'd be nice if the owner would let you take it to someone for a look see. They can check for brake wear, tire wear, condition of the exhaust system, ect. Often times an experienced person can tell if a vehicle as been pretty well maintained or totally ignored with a visual inspection. If you buy off a car lot, keep in mind those guys don't know a thing about the vehicle and don't want to know a thing about it. They'll also clean the hec out of it. Though it's very nice to be looking at an ultra clean used car, all that cleaning may have hidden it's true condition. If you want to be even safer, keep $1600 or more available for things the car may need that you and everyone else may have overlooked. If you find out after the fact that it needs a water pump or something, that's ok. You predicted it might need a thing or two and got the money to cover it. jmo

not having a trade you in a very desirable position. I HATE buying cars and all the bs that goes along with it. You really should try to use Edmunds to find your desired car then use the internet to try to get the car for that price. Once they agree to the price, just go drive it. If you like it they just have to write it up. Alternatively you can find the car at the price you want over the net. Pop into the dealership to drive it...don't tell them you've been in contact on the net. If you like it, go home ask them to write every thing up. You may need to email some info back and forth if you want a loan. Then just go in, sign the papers, pay and drive off---should be pretty quick if all the paperwork is much done. I do not know what you are looking for but 2010 Corolla LEs are selling under $300 invoice and had a $750 rebate last month. I am not sure what the rebate will for for Feb. We are talking out the door for about $16.7K or less. That seams like a great deal and I took advantage of it this week. If not pickly about colors, send for some quotes from local dealers. Then on or around Feb 25 say you want to purchase on 2/28 and tell them to send there drop dead best price. It should be pretty painless. Good luck. PS As far as Enterprise, I'd be weary. A low milegae car reccomended by consumer reports I might take a chance on...a car with a bed rep from Enterprise...forget it.

I have bought many a used car in the past. The trick is knowing what you are buying by your own general knowledge (or your s/o's) and doing your research. I bought a used fridge for my garage 2 years ago, works like a charm. You also have to have an instinct about the person selling the item. I wouldn't buy from someone I couldn't talk to like on ebay. Even so, people do get scammed. My BIL and his wife bought an almost new Audi for 22,000.00. Had 30,000 miles on it and was over $80,000 new. I would never buy an $ 80,000 car, but I would buy the "almost new" version. Buyer beware, as the saying goes.

Someone ran into me back in Nov and totaled my 2008 ES 350 Lexus, and I purchased the the 2016, same model, shortly afterwards. I didn't test drive any other car! I love the way it sits, not too high or too low, as with many of the new models. It has every option known to man, a very generous trunk, and spacious back seat. I've had a couple of 'altercations' with heavy truck treads on the road, which caused absolutely no damage to the under carriage. DD has a Kia and had the same thing happen,and did cause damage and a part needs replacing. It also feels heavier than most cars I have ridden in as a passanger. Also free car wash any time I need/want. ;)

We have a couple of places here that they seem to "yell" at you hoping you will hear better--I told DH that one of these days I am going to walk into the store, and start talking as loud as I can--YES, YOU CAN HELP ME--I am looking for, or do you carry--how much and just keep it up. Then will tell the manager that is how I feel when their ads come on.

Must be related to a certain furnature store in my small town. You go in and look and the owner yells at you when you walk out buying nothing. The last time he told DH "Whatcha come in for if you're not buying anything today?" This is not a one off......we have gone in a few times and told them we are "just looking" at the moment..but it happens everytime....seems he expects a sale each time someone walks in the door.

I like your idea of shouting your reply to an "associate" in a store (read, "salesperson") when they approach you with an introductory question!

And telling your reason, of course. Including, of course, it's effect on you.

If on my leaving his store with empty hands a manager gave me the gears (especially if done in a loud voice), I'd turn back and walk right up to him, telling him that when I'm looking for a major purchase, I want to check out the various possibilities at length before deciding to purchase.

And that, in the light of what he had just done, the possibility of my returning to his store had just slipped down several notches ... that I'd be likely to return only on condition that he was offering something that I really wanted very badly.

Otherwise ... his store was, as of now, out of the running.

And may you have a good day, sir ... I wouldn't want to leave you on a note of rudeness!

I wouldn't hold it against a place just because they used Jerry Springer in their ads. I gained a whole new view of the guy when he was on Dancing With the Stars.

I agree with you, Lindsey. I think Jerry Springer showed himself to be a good-sport, as well as a gentleman when he was on the show. I also think that his reaction to all of his "guests" is pretty tongue in cheek - he KNOWS that it's ridiculous! LOL
