Stop at your local magazine stand and look at the April 2011 Southern LIving Magazine. The Red Hen restaurant in Lexington VA is written up. This is where my DS1 and DIL are THE chefs. Very very excited and pleased. I have posted about the "kids" many times over the years. I know there are some GW folks in the area and one is moving there soon. So enjoy ! c ( aka proud Momma)

I just saw the new issue at the checkout about an hour ago but didn't pick it up. Next time it'll come home with me.

You have a fairly classic layout. Some might suggest swapping the fridge and hutch, but I think it's fine. A few points: 1. What's in the hutch/appliance garage? You need a place for your toaster and coffee maker, and I hope that's it, away from the prep area. Otherwise they're going to end up in the corner, the worst possible place for them. 2. Or is that the MW in there? If it is I'd think about an under counter or drawer MW in the island near the fridge instead. 3. Are you paneling the side of your fridge? I would, if it's facing the great room or dining room. A full view of a tilted-back fridge isn't so nice. 4. Do you have any other place for a water source? I know L-shaped kitchens with islands are supposed to be super efficient. However, I find guests have a tendency to nestle in the only corner, delusionally believing they are "out of the way." And people also run for water right behind the cook at the stove. Easiest fix is water in the fridge, but a bar or prep-type sink could also be useful.

Nice idea, I never thought of that. There is going to be 48" of countertop on each side of the cooktop. So, if I took out 36" for a doorway, that leaves me with only 12" of cooktop counter to the left of the cooktop. I have more than that now and it drives me insane. I thought about a half wall with a ledge for stacking dishes, serving food, etc. But for that to work properly the sink and cooking areas need to swap. Drats. Seems like everywhere I turn, this kitchen, my budget and my stubborn hubby are against me! But, it is what it is, and built back in the day when sinks just HAD to be under a window, period. Is it THAT expensive to move plumbing??

What beautiful windows! and I love the no uppers concept makes it so airy. I would actually make that diagonal wall corner a straight cabinet. The diagonal cabinets are such a cavern and it would go better with the clean lines of the rest of your kitchen. I think you'd want your trash as close to the sink as possible. I'd nix the cookie sheet 12" cabinet (more $) and just put those above the fridge. Then take the 12" and add to the dishes and utensils cabinets. I agree with your concerns and would move the fridge where the hutch is. Otherwise it's more in the way of the person who is at the stove. I like the microwave in the drawer. If you don't use it that much, you can put the one big drawer under it for all the tupperware (depends on hoe much of that you have). Speaking of paleo, there was another GW user who designer herself a paleo kitchen. Same general considerations of no pantry and lots of prep space. It was also beautiful. Catharines Kitchen Link Edited to say that I see your fridge is super tall so you need alternative storage for the cookie sheets. I'd still switch the trash and drawers cabinets by the sink. Are you going to put a rolling cabinet under the butcher block table? To use as a possible island prep space?

Thank you prill and westsider !! We are so pleased that they are doing so well. DIL is also expecting out FIRST grandbaby and is tired !! Business has been so good that she is working very hard. Said she needs a nap LOL. So I hope that the article helps them even more but they may need to hire more help too. Good outcome though. c

Such wonderful news! Is it your first grand? There was a big surge at a favorite local haunt after a very favorable writeup, so I hope that a whole new group similarly discover the Red Hen and make it a regular destination, so your DIL can hire a new sous chef and get some sleep.

Ask them if they remember a tall handsome young man and his curly haired date who ate there before Fancy Dress last weekend. ..... DH and I paid for the dinner so we enjoyed vicariously!!!!

plllog YES it is numero uno ! We are so excited. They are already really busy. We'll see what they do about more help. It only seats 24. And they are turning the tables 2x on the weekends.

They started a Happy Hour at 4 PM right after Valentine's and it has really taken off. My son does all the Charcuterie and it is very popular.He has studied with the best in France to learn how to make some amazing cured meats. They also have local cheeses and the locals supply most of the vegetables and fruits now that the weather is getting better. He also gets all his meat and poultry locally. He has a garden plot at Washington and Lee and there are folks that are going to grow specific things for him. All very exciting.

Thank you Eliz....you need to go and taste the charcuterie since I saw your blog post on it !!

gbsim : WOW ! I will email DIL and ask her tonight. She will surely remember as she does the reservations. What was the name ???

rjr: you are so sweet !! DH made buttermilk pancakes this past Sunday and we had real maple syrup from a friend's Wisconsin trees !! I sure hope you get to go to the Red Hen.

thank you Holly it is indeed very exciting. I have almost all of their toys from when the kids were little and the nicest of the clothes...including a snowsuit LOL that they will need in VA, and all their books so I am well-prepared.

mtrd: the article is "small" and isn't available on line. The shitake farming was a previous chef. My son and DIL have been in residence since Nov. They have made huge huge changes. Thanks for linking the restaurant. We do need a road trip....lots of fantastic places in the area to stay. Right in the Blue Ridge Mt's.

Trailrunner, I was gone to see DS#2 and his wife in OK when you posted this. I am definitely going out tomorrow and buying Southern Living (love that mag)!

I've been so disappointed that DH and I haven't made it to VA yet. He's had a couple of quick business trips to DC, but haven't been able to stretch it into a long weekend yet. He's off to Taiwan on Monday, but maybe in May or June we'll make it.

Congrats to your DS and his wife on the article and to all of you on the grandbaby!
