Here is a neat site where you can list all your hand made items for sale. Some beautiful things to buy made by many talented people. So buyers beware! Looking could cause you to spend money. I couldn't resist a lovely stained glass window panel of a Robin with Lily of the Valley.

I think our very own Flamingo sells on that site. Yes, there are some lovely things there.

I love Etsy, it's a great place to buy and sell, and Phyllis is correct, I do have a shop there and sell something every now and then. Jenni also has a shop. I think Steph does, too. It's fun to see what's new and if you collect something, it's easy to search for your type of item, be it dog, cat, mosiac, glass, etc. They have a great search engine. The amount of talent and creativity is astounding.

I've bought some of the nicest soaps there from magichands and lots of fabrics and patterns (e-patterns are great, no shipping and you get them almost instantly) and some custom order things. Etsy is great fun.

Welcome to the forum, Blueiris. Selling st a craft show is easy and fun. You can go to craftlister.com and find shows in your area to get started. I would suggest you start out at a school or church show. Come spring there will be plenty of them around. But start looking for them now as some may fill up fast. Cost? Anywhere from $35 to $75 for a table space. Make smaller items, find a show and give it a try. You might actually like it. I got hooked in May of 1980. But as far as accepting checks goes, don't be afraid to do so. Things you look for is the name and phone number on the check. Look to see that the check number matches at both the top AND bottom of the check. We don't accept "starter" checks as that's the only time we got burned and couldn't collect. We have had a number of checks come back for non sufficient funds. So all we did was call the bank instead of the customer, made sure there were funds available, informed them I will be redepositing the check and have had no problems. I was charged $5 by my bank for the returned check but found it too much bother to go after the customer for a crummy five bucks. I have really had only about a dozen bounced checks in the 27 years I've been doing shows. And only two that I couldn't collect on. So if you're not afraid to write a check, don't be afraid to accept them. 99.99% of them will be good. Oh, and don't even think about accepting credit cards until you decide whether or not to pursue the shows on a regular basis, no matter what anybody says.

Have you considered raising the price of your pieces when sold retail? 30% does make one cringe, but it's probably not as bad a cut as it sounds when you consider what the store is paying simply for its real estate. Some areas are just extraordinarily high. Then if the locale or even store front is also a highly desirable, profitable location with regards to appeal, visibility, access and convenience, traffic flow, having other popular stores around, etc., they're paying even more. Then there are the utilities, sales help, computer system for checkout, and on, that they are supplying for you. Remember, too, that the shop is also lending its own name, market niche/popularity, and goodwill when you sell there. Interior designers are also going to want a good cut of the profits for supplying customers or sharing their own contacts, which they've worked hard for and probably for many years. And also for spending time working with you and the customer on your pieces. Obviously, they will want to put their time and effort into selling furnishings that reap a higher profit margin (and where their time investment is less). I think they typically do a 20% markup but believe the range of markup I've heard is 20%-40%. Whatever the market will bear : ) Unfortunately, the more people and expenses that are involved in making or selling your product, the more overhead and the more you need to charge to make your own ends meet, including a decent enough profit. It might be a good starting point before you can sell directly and be more independent, though.

Staging, when done well, will result in potential buyers wanting to see the home in person. These days most buyers first look on the web.....if listing photos are dark, show clutter, too much furnishings, etc it is very hard for anyone to get a good idea of the house itself, room sizes, etc. It is human nature to follow the path of least resistance, and with so many homes on the market, those that grab the eye first are those that will be seen first, and often sold before the buyer even takes a look at the less attractive. Point is, sellers need to realize that they are selling a house, and not their stuff. If their stuff takes the focus off of the house itself, chances are it will take longer to sell. In this market, that is something one really wants to avoid. That said, all stagers are not created equal. Just as there were incompetent people flipping homes, the same is true for stagers. Many learn to stage from a quick course that teaches the same standard practices, which results in many cold looking homes, with cookie cutter appeal. It's best to hire someone who has actual design talent and experience instead of just a quick staging course as training, as chances are they will be able to do a far better job in terms of making the home look attractive and inviting with a "standout from the crowd" presentation.

The only things I made this year left the house without pictures (I am really bad about that) -- oversized linen throws with heirloom stitching details. I grew up with a mother and grandmother who were always doing some kind of needleworking or crafting, so it's always nice to see what others are doing. I am a dabbler, doing a little of a lot of things and not a lot of any. I've done needlepoint, cross stitch, crochet, needlepoint, pottery and ceramics (considered buying a kiln), mosaics, sewing, bag making, and quilting projects.

I love Etsy! It is so easy to list things and the fees are so incredibly low.
You can spend hours just looking around!

A friend of mine told me about this site. If I ever get photos of my art work I will someday sell them on Etsy.

My sister has a site on there too. She's a quilter, soap maker, etc. She's really talented in the artsy/crafty field. Not me. But I wish I was.

This is great! Maddielee just told me that I can buy a disposable camera and have the photos put on CD. With that I can post pictures of my paintings to sell them

Geesh, how come I am the last to know about this Etsy.

Actually, my first buying experience did not go all that smoothly. The artist's description of my desired purchase said it was 19" x 17" oval. And that she would ship it in a wood box to protect her work and shipping is $25.00. So I click to buy it and print out my invoice. Went to the Post office and got a money order for the final amount on the invoice. Before mailing it, I got an email from the seller saying it will be $15.00 more for shipping with the wood box. I relented and sent the extra $15. When it came, the actual measurements of the item was 16" x 14", not the 19 x 17 as described. The size was important to me and a deciding factor in my buying it.

I am a little unhappy, but it is beautiful and I will keep it. I emailed the seller and she was appropriately dismayed that this "mistake" was made and said that she would refund $25.00 of the money I sent. I haven't seen it yet, but it is early. This experience won't keep me from future purchases, but I wlll be asking a lot more qestions of the seller in the future.
