argh...I need help with my master bedroom

I started lurking on this site a few weeks ago while I was choosing furniture and fabrics for my living room. So many of you were GREAT help with that and you didn't even know!!! That process seems so much easier than what I am dealing with in my master bedroom. Here is the issue...My entire house has variations on the theme of RED and GOLD. There are a few browns and greens thrown in for some pizzazz, but basically, I like warm colors. After living in this house for almost three years, I am finally getting to the master bedroom and I want to BREAK FREE from red and gold. So...the other day I was in Pottery Barn and saw a bed made up with white bedding (lots of layers) and a bit of linen/taupe thrown in as accent. I immediately felt a connection to that look. I have a large bedroom set (Kingstreet Thomasville-king size sleigh bed in dark cherry or mohagany)and I think the white will be gorgeous in contrast. Now I am trying to pick a paint color and window treatments. I am leaning toward a dark beige...SW latte or meadowlarke. I want to keep it neutral so that I can change accents (maybe a leaf green...or RED if I get a hankering). My REAL dilemma is:

Do I do a solid chocolate brown drape to pick up on the choc. in my furniture with white sheers?

Do I do a monochromatic look and go with a linen type drape to match the walls...again with white sheers?

Do I scour for a print that has brown, beige, white patterns and put that with white sheers?

Or...do I just go with white? (I am not leaning toward that!)

My windows are on the far side of the room and take up a whole wall and a half. Eventually, I will have a seating area there, but for now it will just be the window treatments.

I am sure you have fallen asleep by now. Sorry for the length of the post!! Any help will be welcomed...

I would go for your second option, perhaps with sheers the same color as your drapes? If you know your accent color, you can have a fringe/ball trim/etc added to the drapes.

I've found a lot of inspiration from Nester with her Window Mistreatments. (Google "window mistreatments", as I recall she's under Nesting Place.) You'll become more casual in regard to window treatments!!!

To me a large dark presence on windows against a much lighter wall is always disconcerting. I can certainly understand your not wanting white - boring! I think you actually have two choices: a color that is close to the wall color, in which case I'd make sure that the drapes have a nice texture to give interest. The second choice is to choose patterned drapes that have white, brown and beige or at least brown and either white or beige. The sheers are optional in my opinion and have a lot to do with your need for privacy, diffusing the sunlight etc. I think your bedroom is going to be very pretty as you envision it.

Because your slab is suspended above a basement, you could float a plywood subfloor or adhere a subfloor to the slab. When we float a subfloor, it is usually two 1/2" or 5/8" plywood layers installed on a diagonal layout to the room with each layer staggered so no seams line up. The layers are attached to each other only. The plywood needs to be dry and reasonably flat. Garbage sheathing will not suffice. Since yours is such a large space, I would suggest you do a lot of research on different install options and consult with installers who have done solid over concrete slabs. One important thing to note is the fact that even though your slab is suspended construction does not mean it is entirely safe to assume it is dry enough to install wood flooring over without providing for some sort of moisture barrier or retarder. Concrete can take up moisture and emit moisture depending upon the temperature and moisture vapor content in surrounding air at any given time period. There have been remarkable advancements in adhesive technology with some adhesive manufacturers making the claim that now you can install a solid to concrete directly when using their product designed to do just that. I have not done that. Engineered wood flooring construction is basically a quality plywood with a veneer face that is the specie of choice. The veneers differ from product to product; some have a thin peeled veneer and others have a sliced (sawn) veneer. The unfinished Owens engineered is of the sawn type with a veneer that is almost a full 1/4" thick. I did an Owens unfinished over sheet cork over a slab where the product married to an existing 3/4" solid wood floor attached over a portion of the house that had a basement. You could not tell the solid from the engineered. Good luck with your searches.

I like my first idea best as far as use of space. I know people say not to put toilets on an outside wall. We had one in our last house in Iowa, but we had 2X6 construction. I don't know how high your window is, but I'm guessing the toilet would fit under there. The shower would be 5 feet long or shorter if you want a wider space to get to the toilet. (kind of tight the way I have drawn). You could do a 5 and half foot long shower and do an angled door at the left end to allow room between the shower and toilet. The vanity would be about 7 feet long, unless you do a 60 inch vanity with a linen cabinet at the door. I would reverse entry door swing if you do that.. The second top right could work and you would still have a small closet. The bottom left plan would require waterproofing your front window. Hopefully someone will give you other ideas. The bottom right plan is bigger, but no closet. Each square equals 1 foot.

Well hello Sarah. Good for you. I see you and your husband are okay with painting the room. Bottom line Sarah you are the ones who have to be happy with the room after all you and your husband are the ones who have to live with it and painting it again is no fun. Originally you wanted to make the room feel bigger. It is up for debate; some say darker colors do the job, others light. Anything that reflects light in a room makes it feel bigger such as mirrors, wall lights and I believe, lighter walls. I ask, what color makes you and your husband happy and gets you excited? Also what color is closest to your duvet? Do you want to match the duvet or go just one color lighter? It does seem as if this project is driving you up the wall. Ouch. My wish is that you had a room upstairs that you could turn into a master. BTW the one with a touch of grey looks great. Best wishes, Marcie

Thank you both for your thoughts. I tend to agree with both of you. I went to my room last night and TRIED to visualize AGAIN all options. I came to the conclusion that solid brown would be too heavy for the look I want. I think I like the idea of the sheers because I like that airy and layered look. I guess I keep looking for that perfect panel! bettymnz4...thanks for the Nester idea. I am going to go check that out. ingrid...I like the texture idea. I will keep you posted on my progress. I also love the linen/white look. Unlike you and ingrid, I love the look of long, flowing, white curtains in a bedroom... but I can see how they would be boring to some. I will be going with a similar look on my bed-- mostly ivory with either linen or pale blue/green accents and layers. I had planned to use bosporus flax fabric to make a duvet but I wasnt thrilled with the look of it on my bed. I threw it over a curtain rod and am currently loving the idea of it for panels. It is pale enough to be like a neutral but adds some interest to the white-linen color scheme. Bosporus Flax would be less flexible .. but there are other colorways in the bosporus toile pattern that should coordinate with lots of colors as accents. Just an idea

funkyart...I am going to have to look up "bosporus flax." I am not sure what it is, but it sounds interesting. I love toile, so if it incorporates the natural feel with a toile it could be just the answer I have been looking for. I went to the Nesting Place and have been really inspired by her "mistreatments." I have so many ideas rolling around now! I guess I am going to have to get myself to a fabric store!!! Today!

i love shades of white with shades of brown, they are like my favorites..i have some brown in every room of my house .. it is my calm color
