Mystery Smell in Bathroom

Hi all,

I am desperately hoping you can help us with this problem. We moved into an early 1900's Brownstone in June. The place had been renovated after a fire in January of this year. There are four floors, and we live on the top floor. We noticed gurgling after flusing the toilet and a moldy, musty smell soon after we first moved in. After the landlord (who lives on the bottom floor) sent two plumbers to take a look, it was determined that the toilet was improperly vented. So, they spent one Saturday reventing the toilet. The moldy smell and the gurgling have gone away.

However, we are now dealing with something much worse. Every night between the hours of about 8pm and 7am, we experience the worst smell coming from the bathroom. It is a mix of sweet, acidic, and what one could only describe as strongly garlicy. It burns the nose and makes you dizzy if you are in the bathroom for too long. However, during the day, there is no smell at all. Our landlady tends to be "overwhelmed" by these problems, so I'd like to come to her with a probable explanation, especially since this smell and its timeframe are just bizarre. Please help. We are nearly unable to use our bathroom because of the pungent air. Any ideas what this smell could be?
