? about tooth implant.

I cracked a tooth in October, went to my dentist ( have used him 20 years). He recommended an oral surgeon. OS removed the tooth and put in a pin to hold the new tooth, cost was $3500. I was fine with that. Yesterday, I went to my dentist to have impressions for the new porcelain tooth. Next month he will screw in the new tooth. My dentist is charging me $1250 for these two visits. Is this price unreasonable? I had no idea he would charge this much. I have looked on the web, but can only find the oral surgeons price.

It seems a little high, but cost depends in large part on the area you live in. I paid $3900 to periodontist and $1300 to dentist for two implants--that was almost 4 years ago.

Whatever the cost, it is well worth the money, IMO.

To me, it was not that painful, not even as bad as a root canal, and although we don't have much money, my implants are worth every cent. I got two implants way in back, lower jaw, over 8 years ago. The crowns on them were connected at the top for strength. Finally, just recently, the crown began to "show mobility," and--to make a long story short--our dentist ended up having to remove the crowns this week so a periodontist could check what was going on. Fortunately, the furthest back implant turned out still to be solid as a rock, while the one in front of it is only a bit wiggly, due to an infection and some bone loss. The dentist thinks it can probably be saved with a bone graft, but I'm looking at around 6 months or more of having temporary caps on those implant posts. Fine with me! I loved having these implants, which felt exactly like my own teeth once I got used to them. Even if it had turned out that the present implants had to be completely removed and the whole procedure repeated all over again (spoken of as a possibility before the dentist found them in fairly good condition), I would gladly have done it. Mwoods: It's your jaw, of course, but for me, at least, having a hole drilled into the bone was completely painless (after the needle with anesthetic), and even the day of the implant, with some good painkiller (hydrocodone), I was able to go out with a friend and pick out and buy a new car. Not a bad experience at all! The implants have never given me any pain in use. I agree with others who say it is important to find a dentist with plenty of experience and a good technique for doing the implants. As for the money, you may be looking at several hundred (at a guess) for building up the bone, then more for the implant itself. Once it has healed well, a post is attached on top and a crown made to be glued onto it. The crown will also cost several hundred, probably. I can't recall exactly how much my total was.

Mary: Does an implant mean that your tooth will die? Or can they preserve the root in spite of the screw? And I think that a peg tooth is a full sized tooth that has been shaved/drilled down so that a crown can fit snuggly over it. A peg tooth is a livng tooth, but all of the enamel is gone and it is somewhat pointed. I do have a crown on a peg tooth. Do not look in the mirror when they are mounting your crown. The peg tooth, which is in fact the size of a baby tooth, is really, really different looking. The word that best describes it is scary. I try to avoid looking into my dentist and his assistant's glasses/eye protectors when that tooth is exposed. Because my mouth looks like something out of a horror movie with the exposed peg tooth in the open gum of a full sized tooth. I lost my two front teeth in a bicycle accident when I was about nine, one tooth finally died when I was in my twenties, and now I have beautiful crowns in front. I just got back today from having two old crowns removed, decay cleaned out along the gum line, and am awaiting two new crowns. My teeth have posts in them (does that make them implants?) already, so I am only paying for new crowns. Between our insurance and our medical reimbursement account, I'm not paying for this work directly. Our medical reimbursement account gave us a "credit card" to pay for our health care expenses. It's extremely convenient. It seems like you've gotten great advice Mary. Save that tooth. Unless you love eating firm or highly sticky foods (like those suckers, what are they called? "something daddies" that are perfect for removing certain types of dental work), give this tooth time. Keep your mouth cleaned and floss gently to prevent decay around the base of the tooth. If you can keep your mouth clean and healthy, and avoid hitting your mouth or eating difficult to chew foods (or biting pens, apples, nuts, hard candy, nails etc), I would think that you could wait a half a year. Because we are on a tight budget, we have to alternate my DHs and my dental work with orthodonture for seven kids, I have postponed dental work for years (not root canals but cavities) but just keeping my mouth clean and maintaining twice a year check ups. Finally, if you want to whiten your teeth, pick a nice bright shade for your crown. I didn't choose the ultra white "A" grade that everyone who works in my dentists office has, but sort of a soft, mellow white, the "B" grade. Still white, but not the "you need your sunglasses to look at my smile" white. I really wish God had given us three sets of teeth.

Thanks, Lee! I've been very happy with my almost immediate recovery, as I was expecting something much worse. Since I have no pain, I tend to forget that I just got the implant, and so I have to remind myself to be careful. I had a sandwich for lunch, and I hope bread crumbs didn't get stuck back there. I rinsed out my mouth very well. I make bean burritos frequently and always have the ingredients to make my bean dip recipe. I used up the last of the tahini making the hummus (which I expect to go fast), and so I'll have to remember to pick some up at the next Arab or Lebanese market I go to. We need more lavash, but I can get that anywhere. The tahini is much cheaper at the Lebanese market. Annie, Kevin and I both have mouth guards to wear at night, and I never ground my teeth until fairly recently. I do notice myself doing it when I'm working intensely on a furniture model. I'll make a note not to make popcorn, but that gets stuck in my teeth even when they are normal! I might make some Avgolemono soup with Greek meatballs - I have frozen ground turkey I could defrost, but I need to use up the poached chicken meat first, I think. Of course I could freeze that and defrost the other. Lars

for a permanent bridge (remember this is only one tooth), the right & left adjacent teeth are shaved down, sort of like preparing for a crown, except it would be a three-but-all-one-piece deal, crown, fake tooth, crown, and that would be glued permanently. I think the wired thing is yet another way of doing things...maybe in the case whre there aren't teeth abutting on both sides? My next dentist appointment is a month off, so I've got time to think about it. Very thankfully, cost isn't an issue (though I'd prefer spending the money elsewhere) whichever way I go.

Actually - he pulled a tooth and put in the pin. I
think your regular dentist could have done it all -
total probably would have been cheaper.

My dentist does it all - but Implants are expensive,
no matter how you cut it. But, he is a young Dentist,
too.

Good luck with it - I think you will be really happy
with it.

Inserting the holder for a tooth implant involves drilling into the bone..it's a surgical procedure, and should be done only by an oral surgeon.
I would never go to a regular DDS (who has no surgical training, much less board certification).

In March I had the anchor tooth for a bridge weaken so much it had to be pulled and prepped, along with the empty area the bridge covered, for implants.

An oral surgeon came to the dentist's office to do the procedure. I was prepped for surgery. Everyone had gowns and masks and I was surrounded by a fairly sterile environment. Betadine was swabbed on my face. The tooth was pulled and the two implant sockets were drilled into my bone and packed with bone grafting material and stitched up.

I was given a temp bridge to cover the two tooth gap to wear for the next six months while the implant takes.

My regular dentist quoted me $6,600 for just one implant and didn't even add on a possible root canal, crown lengthening or gum grafting that might be needed. I started to shop around and two other dentist recommended that the weak anchor tooth be extracted and an implant done there as well. A dentist that has been in my area for over 25 years got my business after quoting me about $5,500 for the extraction, bone grafts, temp bridge, and two implants.

Ron,I am a dental asst.The oral surgeons fee sounds a bit high to me,but your dentist fee is what we would charge in my office.We refer our patients to a peridontist to place the implant post and that is usually about $2000.00.

Sure seems high to me. I certainly would have gotten another opinion. My husband had implants which cost $5,000. for the lowers. I went to the same dentist for my cleaning and some pain I was having. She wanted $1,000 to replace a filling in a wisdom tooth and $500 for something else. I told a friend that and she referred me to her dentist. It turns out it wasn't a wisdom tooth, but the tooth next to it. This dentist filled it and filled along the gum line for a total of $242. Wow, what a difference. The othe dentist's office called and wanted to schedule an appointment for the work and I told her, sorry I had it done already for $242. By going to my friend's dentist, the sensitive teeth problem was taken care of by filling along the gum line. No other dentist had picked up on that.

We did not have to pay when Jim got his- it was a workers comp. issue, but we did get a copy of the bill. Now granted, this happened about 15 years or so ago but your price is a bit cheaper than his. We also lived in Southern California at the time.

I had an implant done on an eye tooth last year. I paid $1,500 to the oral surgeon for the implant surgery and $1,000 to my dentist for the prosthetic tooth. (And $325 to extract the broken tooth, if I remember correctly.)

I had a Gum Surgery last year.The surgery went easier than I thought it would be. The injections were horrific!!! The actual procedure was uncomfortable but not bad. That day went along okay, but since the next day I have been in some MAJOR pain. I have pain much but have learned to accept it and get along the best that I can. Regarding cost: I had 8 teeth in three areas done , and it cost $3200, no insurance. I saw my periodontist a couple of months ago and I need one tooth done; that estimate was $1500.
